FREEMAN'S MIND: EPISODE 21

Youtube

Download 672x384 WMV (66MB)

Surprise, here's yet another episode. This one's more action-oriented and plays like some of the earlier ones, so I think fans of the series will like this one more. I wasted pretty much an entire night trying to solve the WMV encoding problem that plagued the last episode, but was finally able to crack it, so hopefully this means no more video/audio anomalies in the future.

This wasn't made during the gap between the last one. I started working on this one on Saturday and it wasn't finished until yesterday. Believe it or not, I can't do much more than about 3 minutes a day on an episode, and that's under good circumstances and not counting additional sound editing. That may sound ludicrous, but it actually does take me that long, I've tried to do it faster before. It's not because I'm lazy, I just don't know how to move faster and still have the show come out as well. While it's loads faster than Civil Protection, it's basically a process of going through a clip, thinking of a line, recording said line many times as I'm not the greatest voice actor (this can range from 2 - 20+ takes, depending on the line and how important it is), editing through all said takes and arranging it in the episode. If I was a better voice actor and good at improvisation I could probably be done with the game by now. In this reality however, the next episode will probably be out sometime late Monday.

In other news, I still want to catch up on subtitles, website improvements, extras, emails, and many other things, but for the moment I'm just focusing on getting the videos out.

EDIT:

I'm probably going to have to add this to the FAQ. Several of you were asking why the episode was up on Youtube before it was up on here. The answer is I never know when the video is going to be up on Youtube. I have to check it, same as you. It's someone else's job to upload it and they're usually pretty busy to be able to answer my inquests all the time. In this case I was taking a nap when it went up since I've been working night hours so it's quiet enough for me to me record (my old spot got converted to someone else's office). Since I'm in a different room this is also why there's more of an echo in recent episodes.

EDIT 2:

Well I finished episode 22, but I don't have control over when it gets released. The original schedule was Monday, but things got pretty close to the wire on this one. I guess it's Tuesday now?

Another brilliant episode, though I must admit this one did seem a bit rushed compared to previous entries. Still, keep up the good work mate, looking forward to the next Civil Protection too!

Holy crap you're fast... and you covered a lot of ground in this episode!

Does that second "Machinima.com" 3D logo need to be in both the beginning and at the end though? I like to watch these back to back on my computer, and having the swirly logo twice in a row seems like overkill. I understand it's good for Youtube, but not in the downloadable file, please?

Thanks,

~ David

Hey man, it takes as long as it takes, of course on our end we enjoy speedy updates but we'd be foolish to expect them and stupid if it comes at the expense of good work. You're doing an awesome job.

All I've got to say is that your process is working, and working very well.

I'd just like to say that this was possibly one of the funniest videos I've ever seen!

I love all of your work, your ideas are so original, and genius!

Half Life was and is my favorite game ever conceived, considering the time made, the length of the game, moddibility, etc., and watching Freeman's Mind has really reminded me why I love it so much.

I hope your career at Machinima continues to go well, your fan-base grows tremendously, and you continue to pump out extremely excellent-quality content as quickly and patiently as you can!

For the record...I think the echo in your recording is kinda fitting. I can see there being some kind of echo in Black Mesa.

I don't know who suggested DivX, but i plea you not to use it.

First DivX isn't 100% free anymore (converters a trail and it also adds a watermark), and second because because it's not a lose less video compression format.

If you really must go with avi, use Xvid.. it's free and open source.

Also anime is best in mkv, everyone knows that.

Wow, Your pumping these cartoons out really really fast. 3 minutes a day is fine for someone who works on their own. Quantity over quality is fine by me.

Just had a thought about the new intro, it would be cool if you could throw in one of the scientists random lines over the fly in to the screen, preferably a different one each episode either that or if you (or someone you could access) could do a decent impression toss in something small.

The only problem I could guess here is that the current intro is probably too short for that to work properly considering you probably don't want voice over the title.

Just an idea.

I was thinking that the echo in the audio was actually an effect you added since most of the places that freeman strolls through are normally empty and would probably echo anyway :P

Hey Ross,

Amazing work putting this out so quickly after the last one! Be sure to leave yourself some time to relax between episodes too!
It's weird, when I right-click save as the wmv, I get a file with no sound, but when I click on it, load it in firefox and then use my download helper to get it off the webpage it seems to work fine...anyone else have this issue?

I have no issues with echo thing. Actually, the first time I heard it I thought it nicely fits in to the surroundings. Great episode, as always. Can't wait to see Freemans whacking people with magnum. Because you'll start using it the next time Freeman find it, right? That's how it was with shotgun, if I remember it right.

nice episode as always, it's great that despite the quickening of pace the episode quality is still top-notch, a little worried about the train tunnels though, hated that part, and bare tunnels do not give much source for comedy.

Wow, Ross. It's great to have the episodes out so quickly! I, like many, don't want to pressure you to keep the episodes released in such a short timespan, though. It's hard. You obviously have more important things to do. LIKE CIVIL PROTEC-*shot*

But really, I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. Nice job, I just wonder how this will pan out in Half Life 2 if you ever make it there. Oh great, I just added more pressure.
