Birthday thread: Soundtracks

Recommended Posts

Better late then never, my playlist just played the KKND 2 soundtrack and yeah...it just is what it needs to be for a late 90s RTS game.

The OST to a relatively unknown game called 5089 is actually pretty good. It's cheap on Steam but you have to search the game files a bit to actually find the music. I found the soundtrack in: Steam\steamapps\common\5089\lib : in a .jar file called assets. Using WinRar or something should allow you to extract the music out of the: Sounds\Music : folder. I haven't found the soundtrack anywhere else on the Internet.

Well if your looking for a really good turn based Rpg soundtrack legend of the dragoon's soundtrack is in my opinion the best. It's a strange mix of traditional jrpg music and rock (it had an American and Japanese composer working together) it's also not hard to find as it had an official release on a cd when the game came out (it's a ps1 game) one thing to look out for though is the opening track is horrible as it has someone singing but you could probably just download all of the songs but that one. I'll try and find a link to it and post it later

The first two Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games have surprisingly good music.

Here's one from Red/Blue Rescue Team (this is from the Red version so it sounds worse. I couldn't find a Blue Rescue Team version on YouTube with good quality).

And here's two from Explorers of Sky.

[Deleted from main forum after seeing this thread. Doh! :P ]

I did a search on the forums for this subject and nothing came up, so without further ado...

I actually signed up for the first time here last night just to post this after watching an old vid where Ross talked about wanting info on cool game soundtracks. But, alas, I was too tired to post it after introducing myself in the Introductions thread, so I went to bed. Well, I'm here now and here's the scoop!

Apparently, Jeff Minter, who worked on the game Tempest 2000, wanted to make a sort of spiritual successor to the game after Atari screwed him over in the royalties department. They finished the new game and released it on the Playstation Vita in 2014 to rave reviews and were planning on porting the game to other platforms when...Atari stepped back in for a second helping of Jeff's ass. They not only claimed that the game was too close to the original (even though several other "Tempest-like" games had come out in the interim that were even more so, without any repercussions from Atari) but also claimed that he had stripped code from Tempest 2K simply because "well, he worked on the game so he must have". Long story short, he had to shut down any plans for porting the game. There's more sad bits to the story which you can find out about by checking out this article: http://kotaku.com/veteran-game-developer-says-ataris-trying-to-screw-him-1692157157

However! While you can't play the game on PC, you can obtain its soundtrack here: https://txk-ost.bandcamp.com/album/txk-the-original-soundtrack!

There are few soundtracks out there that will be able to get your butt moving to this level. Feeling sluggish or down? Pop this soundtrack in and prepare to be compelled to move thine ass! I can't say enough good things about it. I guess I should mention that it's pretty heavily electronic/synth in nature, which goes without saying considering the nature of the game. If this isn't your thing, you might want to look elsewhere for forced derriere engagement! But, for everyone else, I highly recommend you at least check it out. You can sample the tracks at the bandcamp link or find a playlist on YouTube without any trouble.

Also, the game looks fricken sweet! I'm not really an arcade shooter fan, but I remember playing the shit out of the original Tempest when it was in the arcade and would love to give this one a go. Here's a sample of the gameplay, among many others, I found on YouTube:

r5Y85LNLTf8

It really showcases how much the soundtrack adds to the game.

Anyway, I hope someone finds this info interesting and the soundtrack entertaining. I think the story is as fascinating and tragically epic as the soundtrack is powerfully motivational and groovy. At any rate, please take care all and keep on rockin' to those sweet sweet gamin' beats! Peace. :)

Speaking from the third eye of the society machine.

Sorry if I'm reposting these, stopped checking for them after page 7 or so.

Cortex Command:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?start=786&v=ihQel6UCtVA

Soundtrack not available seperately, game is 20$ on steam. I would recommend listening to the whole thing, it's short and pretty much every track is good in its own right. If you don't have the time for that at least check out cc2g, thisworld5 and ruinexploration.

Fran Bow: https://isakmartinsson.bandcamp.com/album/fran-bow-original-soundtrack

This one can be bought on its own and is much longer. Definitely listen to A Little Talk, This Is The Forest, Black Tears, The Bow Family, Kamala Hunt Theme, Mabuka, Dance With The Shoes On and Towards Light. Almost everything else is just as good as these, but they're the ones I heard so many times I remember them by name.

I haven't seen anyone mention Jet Force Gemini yet so here is the full soundtrack to that game:

https://www.zophar.net/music/nintendo-64-usf/jet-force-gemini

Some of my favorite tracks include:

Character Select

Goldwood

S.S Anubis

Cerulean

Mines (aka Water Ruins) this is my favorite but there is an issue with almost every recording I've found of this track.

Most of the songs are a little generic, but still make pretty good tense orchestral pieces. Mines/Water Ruins (Water Ruins specifically) is my favorite track in the game and really quite beautiful but although it is used in 2 different places and sounds almost exactly the same, it seems that the Mines version has the sound of distant pick axes hitting rock and ore, which I think is great for the Mines level but detracts from the beauty of the music outside of that level. I'm fairly sure the Water ruins version didn't have this issue but I've only been able to find one video on Youtube without the noises I'm talking about

I wouldn't call it lesser-known but Doom (2016) 's soundtrack is one of my all time favorites. It's a mix between EDM/Electronic and Metal, it can really get you pumped, especially songs like Rust, Dust and Guts, BFG Division, Vega Core, Mastermind, and my personal favorite, Rip & Tear:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jm932Sqwf5E

This next one is indeed lesser-known in my opinion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W78Z7yz5Mqs Persona 3's soundtrack which is, i would say, a mix of many genres ranging from jazz, 2000's electronic, to pop-ish songs, rap vocals and even rock guitar riffs, on top of that it has a nice mix of ambient, tension and battle songs.

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, this one is on the unsettling/creepy side with electronic and rock influences:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Czh8LMjwp8Q

Enter The Gungeon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3GCez8CDJI, this one is an electronic/orchestral 8-bit/chip tune thing, it's pretty cool.

That is about it for now, maybe i'll think of more in the future.

The "Kane and Lynch: Dead Men" soundtrack is awesome and has much more punch to it than your typical third person shooter ost. Here are some of my favourites:

Mall Fight -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKCYDaezzEo

Tokyo Fight -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aQFdRFzBDY

Truck Fight -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBtFrExwiaE

Jeep Chase -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bbA0_L4Nwc

The Breakout Pt1 -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqCkpEXTz9w

Retomoto Double Cross -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3AoT87BnmU

(some of these titles are actually wrong and don't correspond to what is happening in the game at that time)

Also, the game is great. It was clearly rushed because Eidos was about to go under and needed this game out before Christmas, but even so I absolutely love it. Much better than the sequel imo.
