Ross, I've been following your Game Dungeon series on Youtube recently, but only now I got motivated to enter the forum because I felt I needed to congratulate you "personally". You outdone yourself this time, you really went down into the rabbit hole in this episode. (no pun intended)

 

I'm aware of many weird and obscure games, but I never imagined a game like this existed. And it's funny, because I'm aware of some really crazy stuff. (like Cho Aniki, or even Total Distortion)

I converted it to flac (probably should have done ogg or mp3) so it won't be as big.

Just a point of notice, the highest bitrate for Vorbis is considered to be as close to archival quality possible in a lossy codec, and it still drops the file size to almost 66% of a maximum compression FLAC. In addition, virtually every phone, and every computer is capable of playing them back without issue. (you might need to install a codec or VLC player on the computer though, but the phones don't need anything extra)

Don't insult me. I have trained professionals to do that.

Out of curiosity, I looked up Benny Davidovich's LinkedIn page. This game wasn't mentioned by name, but I think this line may be referring to it:

 

"I Created and produced a big quest Game with 105 screens it was a bestseller in Japan, France and Canada"

Another question: To mp3 or not to mp3?

It's 900 Mb of WAVs, against 165 Mb of MP3s.

 

I personally wouldn't mind a mp 3 version. wav files don't play nice with my current system.

Hey, Ross!

 

In one of the previous videos you mentioned that you use a virtual machine to run old games. Judging by the blue VMware icon in the tray, this is still true. So, I just wanted to let you know that you can save the state of a virtual machine at any time, which means you can save the game anytime you want. I love this episode, but the game just looks so ugly. I wonder if the company who made it had some spare assets sitting around from uncompleted projects and just mashed them together to make this game..

It looked to me more like they were aiming for a CG version of the sort of weird cartoons that were popular at the time, like Ren and Stimpy or Aaahh! Real Monsters. I was going to compare it to The Neverhood, but apparently that only came out a year before this game, so too recent to be an influence.

Just a quick note: The turnaround time for subtitles on this set of episodes will be fairly long. I'm very busy with projects at the moment and this very long Game Dungeon will take some time to create subtitles for. They will come, but it will take time.

I dunno, the data came as PCM samples.

The game feels old enough (and odd enough) to not be aware of sound compression.

I'm impressed you got the audio extracted, I may have to throw a couple more titles your way sometime if you're up for the challenge. As for the audio, I'm surprised it's not ACM WAV files as that was common practice during that time. It's in 8 bit 22khz stereo, which always adds this "fuzz" to the rendition. It would probably be worth converting it to 16 bit 44khz and doing some light noise cleanup on it, but I can't say this is music I was dying to have (thought I can understand how people would like the blues and swing music in particular). Just knowing what that tune that was stuck in my head for a decade or so was from was good to know.

I'm going to be brutally honest here. Even though this is a landmark episode of ross's game dungeon, I don't think I'm going to see this more than once. This game is just so weird that I can't even handle it. I liked the episode a lot and I thought it was well edited, it's just that this game is just so goddamn weird.

I can see your point, I had this exact feeling when I watched Spoony's Bloodwings: Pumpkinhead's Revenge video a long time ago (when he was still good). That wasn't just a bad licensed game, it was a bad licensed game from an already bad entry from a lesser-know monster movie franchise. Not only that, at the time Spoony did his video there was practically no information on the game, he even called it "the game that the internet forgot".

 

And the biggest plot twist on this entire history is that the video peaked the attention of one of his fans (called mmntw26 at the time), that was a big fan of the Pumpkinhead's movies. He had bought a copy of the game before Spoony's video but didn't made much progress, but after the review he became determined to decipher and finish the game, and he even made a let's play of it. That's one hell of a rabbit hole if you ask me, because the game is not only a weird hibrid of FMV-game/FPS/Puzzle, it also have the most cryptic bullshit imaginable, and some of it IS APPARENTLY INTENTIONAL. How are the chances of a game like THAT even being produced?

The devs must of known they were making crap and/or the game wouldn't do well and just went "fuck it".

I'm kinda surprised nobody has mentioned how the "rabbit" mastermind in this game frankly looks more like The Noid from those old Domino's commercials than anything else.

Sure, i like a challenge. :)

 

I'm interested in all sorts of tech and software, and for me to understand equals to implement, as a result i have a fairly good idea about a lot of common and uncommon formats, protocols and algorithms.

I also made one full remake of an old game (M.A.X.) and a few half-done ones.

 

So if you have an old piece of software that is refusing to behave or give away it's secrets, feel free to hand it off to me for a lobotomy.

Just to make sure I really had to install Windows 95 again, I tried running the game on my Windows 98SE box by mounting the disc image with MagicDisc, (it's a real machine but there's no disc drive, I copied the image over with FTP) and it just worked on the first try. How did you do it? Did you just select the physical drive in VMWare or did you use a disc image? Seems like that has something to do with it. Maybe it's possible to get disc 5 working on XP this way too. I noticed that a copy I saw on the internet had a cue and img file for it, while the rest of the discs used iso. I guess there's something different about the format of the disc?

 

EDIT: Nevermind that first part. It works briefly on Windows 98 if you load a game instead of starting a new one, but it crashes once you try to do anything.

I did notice some mistakes for the subtitles in the first part of the review. At 8:22 you forgot a word in "This walkthrough was written the lead writer of the game". Also wouldn't "he was reading a porno magazine" be the correct grammar instead of "he's reading a porno magazine" at 12:56?

Also, in the second part, isn't Granny at 10:15 saying "Prom-mo-mo-bring" instead of "Tra la la!" and the red shoes at 24:18 singing "'Bout a horse named Blues, a cow named Moos" instead?

I agree with the first two changes in the first part and will update that soon.

 

The second two changes-- I don't hear "prom-mo-mo-bring" at all at 10:15. It really does sound like "Tra-la-la" to me. The latter makes much more sense in context too, since she (maybe) straight up murdered someone and couldn't care less. It fits, IMHO. Also, during the "country" song by the dancing boots, it's possible that they're plural but I doubt it, personally. "A horse named Boo" feels like a riff on "

-There is a maybe a small financial advantage of doing it this way for Youtube, though that's irrelevant compared to donations. Fans are easily more important than Youtube metrics now. If a lot of people really want no splitting, I can do it, I was just sort of going with my instincts on this one. Most videos I prefer not to split, this one felt more worthy of it.

I've also heard that, say, if you upload, say, a 3 hour long video, you're harming your discoverability on YouTube. Because YouTube looks at if people stop watching a video before it's finished, and factor that into their algorithms. So if people watch a stream upload that's 3 hours long, and stop watching after an hour or so, that harms that video's discoverability and maybe the whole channel's. Doesn't matter how long it is, doesn't matter if they come back and finish it. Not sure exactly how much this would be determined and weighted.

 

I could be wrong on this, I don't have a reliable source or any way to confirm it, but I could see it being true. Not much to be done about it given the video chats, but oh well.
