Rock music is pretty known. If I ask if someone listens to rock and they answer no, they still have a good idea of what it is. Now electronic music genres are different. Most people don't know what it is. I find that if you find one genre of electronic music you like, you will like others too. For example, I started out with Techno (yes, straight up Techno, I know what I'm talking about), then started listening to Tech House, Then Prog and Electro House, Then Funky House and Breakbeats, then somewhere along the way I found an interest in Trance.

Note: I am only speaking for the US and in personal experience.

To be honest about two years ago I posted a youtube musical theory how everyone reaches the same good music in the end and the only thing that stops people is time, lack of interest in listening to music, lack of interest in trying new genres, not knowing about the existence of good music, denial due to culture and social norm, satisfaction in mediocrity.

But in general all healthy, normal people would reach the same stage of what good music and bad music is in the end.

In my lifetime I listened to (In the following order)

Ukrainian & Russian Pop -> Euro-Pop -> American Pop -> Mainstream Punk, Mainstream russian and american rap, Hip-hop, Alternative Mainstream Rock (Linkin Park, U2, Billy Talent, Coldplay all that stuff...), Electronic -> Russian/Ukrainian Underground Rap & Euro-Dance/House/Trance -> House/Electro House (David Guetta, Ian Carey, DJ Antoine) and American Underground Rap -> Underground House, Deep House & Classical/Post Modern Classical & Underground Progressive Rock

To finally:

Uber selective Underground House, Trance, Techno, Minimal, Chillout generally with a tendency to listen to any other genre if it's good but not put it on my mp3 player.

Oh, and can I have an example of Techno you listened to in the beginning, Zak?

"When a son is born, the father will go up to the newborn baby, sword in hand; throwing it down, he says, "I shall not leave you with any property: You have only what you can provide with this weapon."

Well there can't possibly be 8418 songs that one can all like D:!!!!!

8418? Bah! That would be my short list...

Interesting that there are no mentions of any "serious" rock artists

Genesis

Jethro Tull

King Crimson

Yes

Van Der Graaf Generator

The Strawbs

Traffic

The Doors

Jefferson Airplane/Starship

Deep Purple

Uriah Heep

Camel

...

I wonder if that's because noone on this board likes these bands or purely because people haven't heard them (or about them)? If that's the latter, then I'm sure that some of those who posted here might like some or all of these groups...

Regards

Only one on that list I don't recognize is the last one, Camel. All the rest are a part of my 20,000+ song list.

Don't insult me. I have trained professionals to do that.

It's safe to say my music taste has expanded tremendously since I created this topic. I forgot I even created this topic in the first place.

I've added over 10,000 different songs to my list since I posted that I had a 20,000 list... There's no way I'm ever going to get around to finding all the song names, and putting them in a text list, much less try and post them here.

Don't insult me. I have trained professionals to do that.

This was a real hard one for me but it comes down to just two songs.

Megalith Agnus Dei and Metallic Monks.

I really like songs that combine styles, country/rock combo especially.

Oh gosh, this a thousand times. I've always wanted to hear a song with instruments from the middle east and far east in it alongside modern western trance or metal/rock.

Something like this...

kr_gROZmTtA

Usually, it's not so much the instruments but the pentatonic scale they use, which gives the "oriental" flavour to music. Can't think of a lot of examples off the top of my head but prog rock in general uses a lot of these influences - people like VdGG, Camel, Caravan, Genesis, Yes, King Crimson and their (ex)members. Newer names would be the likes of Ayreon, The Flower Kings, Beardfish, The Tangent etc...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vX1Sses4zA - Peter Hammill

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozga4oRO6rE - Steve Hacket

I'm not positive, but I might have something like that in my library... I'll give a listen for it when I have the time.

Don't insult me. I have trained professionals to do that.
