American school children, every morning, pledge allegiance to the flag and to the democracy for which it stands.

 

I don't know how effective such things are. I suspect that would actually be alienating to many young people with reasonable IQs.

 

I have to say that we never did anything like that in the USSR (at least not in my school). There was one music lesson where we learned the lyrics and melody of the national anthem but that was about it... The last time such indoctrination was used in the Soviet Union was while Stalin was still alive.

Yeah, same here. We'd sing the national anthem on our national holiday but we didn't pledge allegiance to the flag every morning or anything.

Personally, the pledge has no effect on me. I've been saying it for 13 years now in school, and it hasn't made me any more loyal to the United States than if I had not said it. This is one of those things where the enforcement depends entirely on the teacher. Some could not care less if you didn't say it. Some don't even have the class do it at all. Kind of like flag codes. If I drag the American flag on the ground or use it as an oil rag, the cops aren't going to come after me. Actually, flag burning is considered a protected form of free speech, despite what the media might want you to believe.

 

What was stranger to me was that in elementary school, we said not only the pledge, but part of the Declaration of Independence. Specifically this part: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed."

 

I didn't even know what it meant at the time. I actually think that it would be much better to say this than the pledge. Just take out the part about a creator, and replace men with people. It also doesn't carry any sort of national loyalty pledge, even though it was written by Thomas Jefferson. Just be sure to teach what it means.

I've been into it lately and I... really don't care about it anymore. Government is one of the things that I hate the most. It allways goes the same, doesn't matter of form. So yeah, I'd say anarchy.

Naah. Evil people know anarchy is an unworkable system of government, BECAUSE of evil people.

 

Evil people do pretty well under all systems of government, but only in the ones where there are some checks on power do they have the slightest restraints on their power.

 

What we have to do is find some way to draw a line between the idea that all people are created equal, and the idea that all people should REMAIN equal.

Meritocracy.

While I would love something in those lines, lets face it, that would be no better than a oligarchy, the gifted and the talented would just trend on the less-fortunate, because being an "industrialist" or a genius doesnt automatically means you will be a "virtuous" and "righteous" man.

The harsh truth is, we need to be held back by regulations, to prevent the "strong", be them saints or demons, to have power over the "weak". As long as we believe the life of the "weak" is to be preserved and respected, we cant complain about the "junkie" having the same rights as us.

 

The perfect government in my opinion would be a dictatorship, but not one ruled by men, who can be corrupted, but by a machine, precise and just, like a law of the universe itself, I just wonder who would be the one to code it and give it supreme power .

Humans naturally form small hierarchical groups... (cliques, gangs, etc) The most natural form of governance is actually a form of hierarchy, similar to a dictatorship. (that's why it's so common to see in this world)
