Stocking Stuffer

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, I have TWO Christmas surprises coming! Here is the first one:

This is an "outtake" from the

for Civil Protection. I meant to release this years ago, but hadn't gotten to around it. While I've dealt with countless bugs with the Source engine, this is the only one that was actually entertaining to watch. I was so surprised by it at the time I recorded a quick videoclip of it here. What's interesting is you can see Mike's head still tracking the location of the cameraman. You might think this bug is the result of me doing something wrong or experimental, but no. I was giving it basic instructions and the engine just decided to do whatever the hell it wanted. While Civil Protection could return eventually, scenes like this are one of hundreds of reasons I'm abandoning the Source engine for future projects.

Anyway, I'm still working on the second part of the Christmas surprise. It should hopefully be out sometime later today!

That was...Interesting. God damn, you jump through a hoop-and-a-half for every video. What engine/software do you plan to move onto, if you don't mind me asking? Considering Source 2 will no longer be a tower of duct tape, I think it's safe to say there'll be many, many less bugs.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

Yeah, turn on all the mushrooms; I don't care about the power bill.

I doubt Source 2 will fix stuff.

If anything it'll be more buggy.

It took six years to get a physics degree. Don't do what I did, try engineering or social studies.

A huge part of Source's buggyness is because it's based off of GoldSrc. IIRC, GoldSrc also used parts of Quake World and Quake II, but borrowed really heavily from Quake I. Combine that with the fact that the code was (and still is) written in an outdated format, and things just get worse. Hell, the engine's been modified near constantly for more than the past 10 years. IIRC, it was a bit hellish trying to make the Portals and things like it work. Almost all of the authoring tools are the same ones that were used in GoldSrc. It's been ported over to OSX and Linux, too. The code must be a minefield.

I think that we're certainly going to have bugs; they're unavoidable. But, since all the authoring tools are going to be written from scratch, all the code having a nice do-over, it's going to be a hell of a lot easier to fix bugs.

Yeah, turn on all the mushrooms; I don't care about the power bill.

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through my place

I was drinking a beer while browsing web space.

The monitor glowed on my desk like a ghost,

In hopes that a Ross Scott soon would post.

The kid and the lady had left town for the night,

the place to myself is such a precious delight.

The beer in my hand being all but done,

it was almost time to admit sleep had won.

When up on my monitor I saw such a treat,

I almost went crazy and ran in the street.

A new bit of Civil Protection was what I want most.

Ross Scott, gentlemen scholar, to you I do toast!

Merry Christmas!

...but time flows like a river...

...and history repeats...

Question: Doesn't Source Film Maker make things less headach-y or are you at this point not caring what tools pop up and just want a different engine to use?

Source Filmmaker is annoyingly bad for Ross.....last time he used that engine was for a machinima that he tried to make called Stranger in Need and that took him forever to make it honestly.......it was a total nightmare....

Source Filmmaker is like an animation tool made out of duct tape for a game engine made out of duct tape and somewhere within that is Quake.

Also, I'm thinking that there's going to be a new game dungeon, but I'll be happy with whatever.

Yeah, Source in general can be a big headache, whether film maker or the games.

Hope to see what you have in store for us later.

Merry Christmas, everybody.

I wonder which time zone the "later today" was referring to...

It's today's morning in Seattle, it's approaching midnight in Moscow, and it's tomorrow's morning in Sydney.

So, Ross is anything from 12 hours late to 12 hours left.

Isn't there a Christmas Carol that you've mentioned that Ross loves before.

Yeah, turn on all the mushrooms; I don't care about the power bill.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

I need more time to research, I'm definitely leaning toward Unreal 4 though. Any modern engine will look great, whatever lets me get the most done animation-wise is the key.

I'm pretty sure it's the Carol of the Bells... or I imagined it. We didn't talk about carols this Christmas

Here's a beautiful acapella version by Pentatonix:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSUFzC6_fp8 MY favourite version. Ross is not a fan of acapella. I'm a huge freak about great vocals though. And today it's still a Christmas day in Poland, because 26th is just a second day of Christmas.
