Political Compass

Recommended Posts

Similar to the Personality type thread, I think it'd be handy to have one for the Political Compass. As far as my searching shows, it's been brought up before briefly, but not as a standalone thread (if I'm wrong, feel free to moderate this as necessary)

http://www.politicalcompass.org/

Considering recent posts made on the forum, I think it'd be handy for people to know what each other's general stances are, so as to reduce the chance for harsh standoffs.

Please only have polite discussion here. Politics is a very important and personal issue (for me anyway), but I accept that not everyone shares my views, and their views are the opposite of mine. However, I won't call you out on it, because I have as much chance of changing your stance as you have of mine. Accursed Farms is a place of discussion, not fighting.

So, here's my result. It's interesting to compare your result with well-known names: https://www.politicalcompass.org/analysis2

I don't know what this all means, and only understood 80% of the questions, but that's okay. XD I'm not into this stuff. I just saw a test and did it. XP Fun!

I have no idea what this means. I'm in a green square and green is a nice colour so I'll just roll with that. XD

Still not entirely sure what this means in the end. I can say this may not be entirely accurate since some of those were met with "what does that even mean?" or "I don't agree OR disagree."

Heavily libertarian so far... just what I would've expected from Accursed Farms. This is surprising, as I expected to be much further to the right (in the purple quadrant).

Do you feel blame? Are you mad? Uh, do you feel like wolf kabob Roth vantage? Gefrannis booj pooch boo jujube; bear-ramage. Jigiji geeji geeja geeble Google. Begep flagaggle vaggle veditch-waggle bagga?

The Left-Right scale is based around economic ideals, whereas Up-Down is about social ideals.

From the website:

"The usual understanding of anarchism as a left wing ideology does not take into account the neo-liberal "anarchism" championed by the likes of Ayn Rand, Milton Friedman and America's Libertarian Party, which couples social Darwinian right-wing economics with liberal positions on most social issues. Often their libertarian impulses stop short of opposition to strong law and order positions, and are more economic in substance (ie no taxes) so they are not as extremely libertarian as they are extremely right wing. On the other hand, the classical libertarian collectivism of anarcho-syndicalism ( libertarian socialism) belongs in the bottom left hand corner.

In our home page we demolished the myth that authoritarianism is necessarily "right wing", with the examples of Robert Mugabe, Pol Pot and Stalin. Similarly Hitler, on an economic scale, was not an extreme right-winger. His economic policies were broadly Keynesian, and to the left of some of today's Labour parties. If you could get Hitler and Stalin to sit down together and avoid economics, the two diehard authoritarians would find plenty of common ground."

Wow, you're the closest to not being left-leaning libertarian.

As for my own:

I HAVE to blow everything up! It's the only way to prove I'm not CRAZY!

If anything, this test is showing what a bunch of damned bleeding-heart hippies we all are... :P

That was a rather good and in-depth survey. Did anybody find some of the questions really hard to answer? Especially given the lack of a "don't know/unsure" option. For some of the questions I was torn between quite opposing positions, often an intellectual response versus a more visceral emotional feeling. Some of the items about criminal justice and rehabilitation weren't as straightforward for me. But on the flipside some questions I had no qualms about, particularly about sexuality and same-sex relationships.

they pass their abuse from ear to ear

in dying whispers -

even now, when prayers are no longer prayed.

turns out to be laughter.

So, this is interesting. The issue with me doing this type of stuff is that I'm not personally huge on it nor' do I have comprehensible thoughts. My thoughts contradict each other quite frequently, especially with philosophical questions and the like. One correct thing is that I consider myself to be a pretty peaceful person but who knows if that's my true self. Maybe I'm just ignorant of the world or something.

My suggestion is to retake the test every day, or once a week until you have taken it a dozen times, then average the scores.

Don't insult me. I have trained professionals to do that.

Woah, everyone is so liberal?? No idea how a lot of people got sooo radical scores (those -7 are crazy)... Left Libertarian? So its basically corporations are evil, governments are evil, being rich is evil etc. + freedoms (e.g. sex and orientation), immigration and "cultural differences are so enriching for us" are the most important thing ever?

here's mine:

EDIT: for some people wondering on the questions... I have a feeling many think of the "greater good" like an utopia. For example - Yes, theoretically free trade should be better for the greater good (looking at the Earth in total, not individual states) but in realitity it won't be great for everyone.

The real question is - if you know that a certain direction your country is taking WILL lower your living standards (e.g. more immigration - smaller wages because of bigger competition, free trade agreements that will make certain manufacturing sectors move abroad and therefore jobs will be lost etc.) will you lean towards immigration, free trade etc. because its for a greater good (e.g. some Asian emerging markets will benefit on your expense) OR will you defend your rights with laws, protectionism etc.??? Are you willing to lower your standards for others?

You have anything against the freedom of sex? Think again, man... think again

But - protectionism never works, you know. All you'll achieve by pampering your domestic manufacturers is that everyone in the world will get ahead of them and eventually they will go down the drain when you will be forced to import stuff that they are incompetent at doing. Believe me...

Although I don't like it, its not my business what happens at someone's bedroom. Its just the process and the way its "given to us" that I have something against. But that's not that important tbh, there are a lot more important things around us.

Never works? Destroying industrial capacity doesn't work either... I'm still a believer in the fact that you need an x amount of industry (both for local consumption and for export) to support an y amount of services. It may work for very small nations - e.g. Luxembourg has become a financial center. Such small and wealthy states can get rid of industry almost completely. But it will never work for larger states. I didn't say we need 100% protectionism and embargos on goods or against China for example. I'm thinking about more moderate approach. Remove all barriers and watch many industries burn (besides those with very low trade intensity).

Industrial capacity is worthless if it produces worthless product. You might as well be handing out cash to the workers and let them do whatever they want, instead of forcing them to do make-work. It's just a way of burning cash taken from elsewhere.

When an old insustry dies out it gives way to new things and ultimately it is for the better for everyone concerned.

By all means - stimulate new things. Fund research, help start-ups - there are many useful ways of protecting new things while they grow but for the old pointless dinosaurs - save your tears, it's not worth it...

About the freedom of sex, though - I'd say it wasn't "given to us", it was hard faught for... Compare our life with, say, that in Afghanistan, where love will most likely cause you to be stoned to death...

Nah, you'll have to pry the freedom of sex out of my cold dead fingers, even though you'll never find me in an embrace of a prostitute or catch me out on a one-night stand :D
