Birthday thread: Soundtracks

Recommended Posts

I got no idea if anyone has mentioned this one yet, but the OST to Xenoblade Chronicles and the first Xenosaga game are really fucking good. My favorite from Xenoblade is DEFINITELY Mechanical Rhythm. Starts off with some sweet guitars, then keeps a really nice rhythm and undertone with them while adding in a real nice violin.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FpZzMNz1BSk

The boss theme, "You Will Know Our Names" is pretty good too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ooZyHLLQ5e8

My favorite from the first Xenosaga has got to be the battle theme. Its a shame the game didn't have any boss battle themes, not even for the final boss, so it gets repetitive after a while. It's good for a really long while though.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ho6-zsXy3iU

Damn near the ENTIRETY of Deemo's OST is good. It's a game entirely about music, with a subtle storyline. Most of it is piano.

Now for my favorite: Proof of a Hero from the Monster Hunter series.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3Ha8GCv788

This song is one of the most beautiful and inspiring tracks I've ever heard, especially the Freedom Unite rendition that plays while you're fighting a big ass fucking dragon the size of a fucking skyscraper.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKyzN3jNw8w

Pretty much every damn track in any of the Monster Hunter games is amazing. (I also really like the Black Lute rendition https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6s6urUZC9k . It's an awesome metal rendition, and part of the official Black Lute album.)

That's pretty much all that comes immediately to mind for me.

The soundtrack to ASAMU (A story about my uncle) is all really good. Also, the menu theme to Empyrion - Galactic Survival, and maybe some other stuff.

Sluggish Morss is awesome, it's a surreal little (free) adventure game from a few years ago, and while the soundtrack lacks the punch it has with the visuals and effects, it's still pretty atmospheric and rad.

Here's the link: https://jackking-spooner.bandcamp.com/album/sluggish-morss-extended-soundtrack

Hell, this was mostly just an excuse to talk about Sluggish Morss in the first place, so here's the game (again, released for free), it's kinda like if David Firth made Undertale. http://gamejolt.com/games/sluggish-morss-a-delicate-time-in-history/12298

Here's a couple examples, off the top of my head, of great music from games. Don't know if these have been mentioned but hey:

- Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon soundtrack, specifically the main theme, and power core. And maybe also the love theme. I might be biased because I loved the game, but I thought its music was both effective and memorable.

- Binding of Isaac ost - again no vocals, just really catchy, effective music.

- also - randomly - the main theme from the old Dawn of the Dead. That slow beat really sinks in for me :)

Can confirm, Undertale's soundtrack is amazing; although this page doesn't seem to have the full soundtrack.

Some of the tracks that should definitely be listened to on there are

Home (Calming home music, like being in a house in Earthbound or Legend of Zelda)

Heartache (Another boss battle theme)

Bonetrousle (no explanation)

Waterfall (I feel like it describes an adventure well)

Another Medium (Theme with a lot of anticipation)

Spider Dance (Extremely catchy)

CORE (Late-game area theme that keeps you going)

Undertale (Really nice to listen to-- main theme of the game despite being 71st on the soundtrack)

ASGORE (Intense boss battle theme, should fill you with determination)

There are several other really good themes that are absent on this list, like

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5daGZ96QGU, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tz82xbLvK_k/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZRP7nQkfrM, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgRfPc1lfJk, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWjavxcGfqM, and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5P8V4mP5RLg, but I'd suggest playing the game if you want to hear them-- except Megalovania.

Added links for convenience (Some on youtube due to not being in bandcamp)

Spiral Knight has a great soundtrack...

AND it also a dying F2P online only game with a low player base which devolved into heavily grinding or pay to progress with updates that are purely cosmetic. I know this is a thread for your birthday but this game is in REALLY bad state of life support, death is eagerly wait for the plug to be pulled on this one and I would like to hear you voice your opinion on the game play of this game and the state it is in.

Nier has by far the best soundtrack i have ever heard in any game.

The soundtrack of the game is so good that elements of the game were changed to match the music, not the opposite like it would normally happen. Some of the songs even use a fictional language the creators made up or something, it's absurd.

I will put one of the songs that doesn't have anyone singing, even though most of the songs that have lyrics are so good you should definitely look them up one day.

You should probably check out the original Quake soundtrack... Composed by Nine Inch Nails, even the game sound effects were made by them/him. The tracks actually include a lot of the ambient sound for the game as well as the music, and NIN supposedly expanded on this style with the "Ghosts I-IV" album. (so you might want to check that too, it's an entirely instrumental album)

Also, big bonus... The author specifically requests that people pirate his stuff, just because he hates the music industry that much.

Don't insult me. I have trained professionals to do that.

Not a game, but a mod... Project reality mod was originally started in July 2004 as a modification of Battlefield 2, and has since grown and grown, even 11 years later it's still easy to find a server...

The game is epic, but the main title music is extremely reminiscent of Hans Zimmers music for Inception, moody, dark, with but also sparkled with hope and melody.

it's much more than just a copy, it's a beautiful stand alone music, and i'd very much reccomend a listen.

Sorry about this comment being so late, but I only just saw the video. There are a few video game tracks that I personally really enjoyed. Among them, they include:

"Industrial Park", from the ps2 video game "Spongebob: Battle for Bikini Bottom". It's a surprisingly creepy track, considering that it's from a spongebob game. It plays during the boss battle with Robot Patrick.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrUt7BoJFcw

The main title from the ps3 video game "Lair". The game itself wasn't well received, but the music all-around was phenomenal; this opening track in particular stuck out to me though.

You've probably heard of the video game "Destiny", but as it hasn't yet been released on the PC, I thought I'd post one track that stood out to me.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bNSLzfMBo4

The ps2 game, Medal of Honor: Frontline had a lot of great music. My favorite track has to be "Manor House Rally" though.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wq3eRXmboC4

Though the soundtrack of the ps3 game Call of Duty 3 wasn't, in my opinion, as good as frontline's, I enjoyed the track "The Corridor of Death" and "The Corridor of Death 2"

The following are from the ps2 video game "Star Wars: Bounty Hunter". Most of this game's music is just taken from the Star Wars films, but these tracks were exceptions; music unique to the game.

The Main theme:

"Montross"

"Path of Sorrows"

"Kamari Vosa"

And that's my birthday present! Sorry if its a bit much. Also sorry for all the youtube links; I know you said you didn't want music on youtube, but I thought the quality was okay, and it was just the easiest platform for me to find music on. Regardless, I hope you enjoy.

The soundtrack to the Steins;Gate anime is pretty great, though I have yet to play the game and see if it's up to snuff. It's available on both iTunes and Amazon, as well as through "less than 100% legal" mediums. Here's da links:

https://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/steins-gate-originalsoundtrack/id380285403

https://thepiratebay.se/torrent/7910185/

On closer inspection, the Amazon version is REALLY fucking expensive. But hey, maybe you just prefer CD, so there it is anyways.

Glad to see I wasn't the only one wanting to give Age of Wonders some love. I'd like to do one better by providing the soundtracks for the entire trilogy. Honestly, this will probably be the useful thing my copy of Age of Wonders III will ever do. Also, pretty much every track in AoW2 can be found in it's expansion Shadow Magic, but I had the means to post both so I figured I would just for completeness sake. M3U files can be found near the top of each list (except AoW3 but those are actually numbered anyway) if you want to listen them in proper order.

I thought I'd also share the tracks from one of my favorites, Lords of Magic. The combat music was particularly fun, since the game would actually string several 6-12 second tracks together, picking which ones to use based on how well you were doing. I can't really say that listening to the individual tracks themselves back-to-back really gives the same experience. Someone on Youtube already made their own "winning" and "losing" battle mixes so I'll add those links below. The rest of the music is beautifully atmospheric, with each faction having their own distinct style. The addition of stuff like blowing wind and crackling fire is particularly nice for those more nature-oriented faiths.

Losing the Battle https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3Aw-V7Cqgw&index=3&list=PLBD874066AE18A413

If anything's off with the dropbox or the files, let me know. It might be a little cluttered, but I hope you enjoy. Cheers to what will likely be the only thing I ever post on this forum, and happy birthday.

Not sure if someone already posted about this but in the game Freelancer, a space sim, there are a few bars where you find news and pickup jobs. Most are you will forget but there were a few that I have saved for years and are always on my play list. Ihey are very loop-able.

You can grab the files directly from the game folder but they are stored as MP3, I am not sure if anyone will find any thing better.

Here is where you can find some tracks: http://the-starport.net/modules/wfdownloads/viewcat.php?start=120&list=M

And here are my top 5.

Checked the thread and no one posted the Soldier Blade soundtrack. It's a scrolling shooter for the NES, which has some fantastic chip-tune music, with the music for the Caravan level being my favorite. Found it by recomendation of Arin Hanson of Gamegrumps fame.

Just listen to the Intro song and that alone gives you a good idea of what you're getting.
