Birthday thread: Soundtracks

Recommended Posts

You absolutely ought to listen to the soundtrack of a game called Frozen Synapse. It's technically a turn based strategy game, but especially awesome in that you plan out your whole five second turn, and then every player's turn happens simultaneously, once all have been entered. It's the kind of game I could see you really enjoying. My favorite track is "Focus". Just kickass cyberpunk goodness.

Anyway you can find the whole album here: http://nervoustestpilot.co.uk/album/frozen-synapse-original-soundtrack

Another killer soundtrack, for my tastes is DustForce. It's a precision platformer that I gave up trying to beat once it got too hard. I still loved the time I spent with it. In no small part because of the soundtrack which kept me calm and focused on my goal. It's relaxing and almost hypnotic. If it wasn't I think the game would quickly become frustrating, but I never got upset. I could listen to "Elvish Piper Academy" all day for weeks and never get sick of it.

Once again, hope you enjoy: https://lifeformed.bandcamp.com/album/fastfall

I recommend the soundtracks of The Legend of Zelda Majora's mask, and Final Fantasy 2. As for the former, choose the 3ds version because it's a bit clearer than on the N64. As for the latter choose the Origins soundtrack because it's clearest and has best instruments imo.

I loved Command & Conquer: Generals to death. But with Windows 10, I'm unable to run my hard copy of the game because they removed SecuROM DVD protection from the new OS. I tried using a crack for the game, but I've had no success.

The soundtrack for this game is one of my favorites, especially the USA faction's.

I've played a fair share of the Battlefield 2 mod "Project Reality" and the soundtrack is amazing.

Here's one that sounds like a bunch of Scots raining from the sky:

I absolutely loved Battlefield: Bad Company 2's OST as well.

The Metroid Prime trilogy is a series of games with incredible soundtracks. Not only do I recommend that you listen to them, but it's the one I think should also be played. You would not regret it.

Here's the soundtracks for the first, second, and third games.

The Halo franchise also has consistently superb soundtracks. I own them all, and recommend all of them, but for the sake of length, here's just the soundtrack from Halo 5: Guardians, which released just two months ago:

Although the best soundtrack of the past decade has to belong to Killer Instinct for Xbox One. Each track is a completely unique work with very careful thought and craft put into them. Spinal's track alone ("Warlord") was an intercontinental effort, including a Tibetan instrument called a kangling, a flute made from a human femur, and a choir of thirteen men singing in Swedish. A handful of the other tracks have lyrics, two in English, but they're exceptional all the same.

Unfortunately, Mick Gordon, the composer, left after Season 2, but hopefully the new composers can step up to the challenge. There isn't a good non-YouTube site for this that I can find, but these soundtracks are available for purchase on iTunes, Amazon, what have you. So give them a listen and if you love them as much as I and many others do, go purchase them.

An LPer I like recently played Mibibli's Quest, which was basically a deliberately weird take on NES platformers, particularly the Mega Man series. Between the horrible color palette clash and zaniness is an excellent chiptune compilation with some occasional diversions into different genres of music for novelty's sake.

Listen to the OST

.

If you pay at least $10 for the game (which can also be downloaded for free or any price, really), you get a copy of the soundtrack for your own personal use.

One OST I have always been fond of is the one for Breath of Fire 4, a ps1 turn based game centered around, mostly, eastern mythology.

Playlist is here

My favorite songs from it are two of the battle themes and a character theme

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7WbJfY4Dns

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eb6PIjrC1ek

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYfHR-0f31A

The OST for Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, a game about God, law, chaos, Lucifer and the fate of humanity.

My favorite songs are mostly atmospheric themes used in certain areas.

Area 1

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuzvQW_gxkk

Area 3

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlPA5FbOk-o

And specially the boss battle theme. It is slow and feels majestic and apocalyptic, like the boss fights in it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2Rugr05FMM

And the OST for Space Funeral, a small RPGMaker game.

The battle theme is probably the catchiest song in the game

Dominions stuff. Too damm hard to extract this music, as well as to find authors. Maybe because part of is classical music, medieval stuff.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5xAMFZFhW4 Creeper World 3 Mortars.... Baby

Joan of Arc, liked this game. In Your Name is best one.

Don't ask... It reminds me of Tropico 2 soundtrack.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTQ4N2x6iwA Bad clone of Diablo, but it had decent soundtrack.

From game Besieger. Can give link for download.

These have singing so... But they are obscure so maybe someone will like them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eS8kA1D5JFQ Will Rock. Reminds me of serious Sam.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=miV7xEtuoLc Really weird game. One of it's game mods has strange economy model... Based on cows and their milk.

Happy Birthday!

I came across a multiplayer mod, NeoTokyo, for HL2 about half a year ago with a surprisingly awesome soundtrack. If you're into cyberpunk-ish electronic music, I bet you will like this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=408tWOubRDM

I can't speak for the game itself, as there literally were no players online when I started it up. It's such a shame that this wonderful soundtrack is stuck to a dead multiplayer mod. This could easily have been in something like the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077. Seriously, it's that good.

The soundtrack has been released as a free download by its producer here:

Hey Ross:

Here's one of my fave soundtracks from an obscure video game call Pulseman, released in 1994 for the Genesis only in Japan. Here's a Youtube link:

Youtube:

If you have like VGM plugins and shiz for Winamp, you can get yourself a VGM rip of it here.

If you're interested, I can convert the vgm files to MP3 for your convenience.

Here a few soundtacks of the top of my head

First

Undertale:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7RRgF5Ve_E&list=PLpJl5XaLHtLX-pDk4kctGxtF4nq6BIyjg

Now everyone is going to suggest this one but for good reason its in impossible to listen to this soundtrack and not get at least one of the songs stuck in your head.

Second

Sly Cooper 2 Band Of Theives:

Now this one is actually more to set a mood then anything else like if your going to pull off a big art hesit and want music to listen too while you did it this is what you want.

Third

Bloody Roar 2:

I am very nostalgic when it comes to this game this was the very first game I owned. I got the day after my parents got me a ps1 at garage sale and kept / played it until I sold my ps2 years later. The tracks themselfs are actually some pretty awesome hard rock also Ross you may be interrested in this series 1-5 because I belevie they may be abandonedware as I know Hudson Soft who made the games closed down a few years ago.

Fourth

Unreal Tournament 99:

not much to say about this one my dad had this installed on are computer when was like 4 or 5 just firgued you like it Ross

now the final one

Splatterhouse-This story is happy end?:

1988:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vr4PTaitszc

2010:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCqFCwPs8P8

This one is only one track but in my opinion this is one of the most hunting songs I have ever heard in any game they remade it for the flawed but awesome remake in 2010 which is how orginally found it but I still think the 8 bit version is the best

hope you find some new favorite tracks Ross Happy Bday

I would say that the Transistor and Bastion OSTs are some of the best out there. The majority of the tracks are instrumental, and they are all amazing in my opinion. There are some tracks with vocals in them, but I believe that these will stand up to even the most dramatic scrutiny out there. They can be found as follows:

Bastion: https://supergiantgames.bandcamp.com/album/bastion-original-soundtrack

Transistor: https://supergiantgames.bandcamp.com/album/transistor-original-soundtrack

Alright, I am not sure how well known this game is, but nobody I talk to know it; the game is Gods Will Be Watching. Best soundtrack I can think of that is not well know.

Here is a link to a bandcamp collection of all the tracks:

OG game music- https://fingerspit.bandcamp.com/album/gods-will-be-watching-original-soundtrack

the free DLC music- https://fingerspit.bandcamp.com/album/gods-will-be-watching-final-chapter-ost

Highlights include:

Self Justified Sacrifices- is an excellent introduction, and can fit with anything cyberpunk

Everdusk Rescue- A shorty but a goody.

Everdusk Headquarters

Xenolifer theme

Gods will be watching

Legend

Suicide Mission to Save the World

The Face of Genocide

Nemesis

That is some of the note able stuff without taking too much space in the thread, most of the stuff-if not all is amazing, as well as the game.

Okay, here's a list of games with a pretty good soundtracks:

Strike Suit Zero. Seriously, it was composed by the same guy, who made Homeworld soundtrack.

Tribes: Vengeance. Highly underrated game with pretty good music.

Edge / Edge reloaded. Good electronic music. For a fun casual arcade, a port from mobile, it has some sweet tunes.

Spartan Strike. Simply incredible job for another port from them phones. If you like styles of both new and old generations of halo music - this game has tracks for ya.

X: Reborn. Bad game, but the soundtrack makes it good. Sometimes even epic.

Freelancer. It is impossible to imagine this game with other music. The atmosphere... I simply cannot describe it.

Xonotic. For arena shooter, it has a pretty good music. Nothing special, just good.

King's Bounty (Armored Princess in particular). when I heard it for the first time, I just lost my jaw. Simply incredible.

Space Rangers 2: A War Apart. This game has A LOT of good (and different!) music. Once again, it really makes the atmosphere of the game.

Unreal: Return to Na Pali. It is impossible not to fall in love with this soundtrac, just impossible. Or, should I say, unreal?

And the last one...

Shut up and jam Gaiden. Omg, the music in this game is fantastic!

That's all I could remember.

P.s. Happy Birthday Room Ross!

The Grinch for PS1 based on the Jim Carry movie.

The soundtrack is maybe the best thing about this game. The actual game is kind of ruined by bad controls, but it has some good aspects in my opinion. Like the level design is frustrating to navigate but somewhat interesting to explore otherwise. Some of the puzzles are ok, but the platforming can ruin it. I haven't played this game since I was like 9 so I may be wrong.

Definitely give this soundtrack a chance, even though a few of the songs have the same underlying melody at parts, they're in completely different genres. This might not be everyone's thing. I would listen to this soundtrack without looking at screenshots of the game. Don't even pay attention to the names of the individual songs, just pay attention to the music itself and picture whatever comes to mind. This music is very atmospheric, and it feels like the composer was more interested in doing his own thing than making music that fit the game. Just a suggestion though.

Oh and happy late birthday. :geek::D

I'm not sure if the Metal Slug franchise is still well-known (or ever especially popular to begin with), but when I hear the word "soundtrack," Metal Slug 5 tends to come into my mind. It's not exactly the best soundtrack or the most diverse one, but I could never go wrong listening to it. I would describe the majority of the soundtrack to be this "middle ground" between hard rock and speed metal with a bit of techno sprinkled onto it.

http://downloads.khinsider.com/game-soundtracks/album/metal-slug-5-original-soundtrack (some of the soundtrack is missing here, unfortunately).

The more notable ones are Zoom Down, Speeder, and Final Attack (granted, this theme is in almost every Metal Slug game).

The Youtube links are for those wary about the website. I doubt there's viruses, but I have virus protection on, so I wouldn't know anyway.
