Birthday thread: Soundtracks

Recommended Posts

Okay, so I don't play much Minecraft and I have a feeling that alot of the people here might hate it or something, but holy christ, the soundtrack, created by C418, is just fantastic.

Volume Alpha: https://c418.bandcamp.com/album/minecraft-volume-alpha

Volume Beta: https://c418.bandcamp.com/album/minecraft-volume-beta

There's also the soundtracks to Super Meat Boy and Binding of Isaac, by Danny Baranowsky.

SMB: https://dbsoundworks.bandcamp.com/album/super-meat-boy-digital-special-edition-soundtrack

BoI: https://dbsoundworks.bandcamp.com/album/the-binding-of-isaac-2

And then there's also the soundtrack to Super Hexagon, by Chipzel.

Ori and the Blind Forest — Very emotional orchestral music with unique instrument selection, and a good amount of wind instruments.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkzeOmkOUHM

Favorite Tracks: 01-04, 07 Finding Sein, 17 Restoring the Light, 23-24 Completing the Circle, 27 Conundrum

Sublevel Zero (just came out) — Chiptune meets orchestral.

http://music.willbedfordmusic.co.uk/album/sublevel-zero

Favorite Tracks: 02 Sublevel Zero, 14 Berzerker,

Einhander — Because Japan

https://www.youtube.com/watch?start=1431&v=8JfsyfLzmDM 12 Factory,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?start=1630&v=8JfsyfLzmDM 13 Dawn

https://www.youtube.com/watch?start=2360&v=8JfsyfLzmDM 17 Thermosphere

You can actually buy this album still.

Fittest — Zircon's "elentronica organica"

https://zirconstudios.bandcamp.com/album/fittest-original-soundtrack

Only songs I like: 04 Photosynthesis, 09 Fusion Master

Return all Robots — Zircon

https://zirconstudios.bandcamp.com/album/return-all-robots-original-soundtrack

Only song I like: 09 Jamaican Cyberturtle

Really, my favorite work of his is his album work (sorry, not technically video game music, just by a video game composer, and in the same vein)

https://zirconstudios.bandcamp.com/album/getaway-ep I can listed to 01 Augment and 03 Across the Ocean all day.

Also he's got this Zircon Vault thing so you can use any of his music on YouTube. Don't have to worry about ContentID with him. The Vault is also how you can get instrumental versions of his Identity Sequence album, which is fantastic.

inMomentum — By Gareth Coker of Ori fame. Contemporary electronica.

http://musicstore.gareth-coker.net/album/inmomentum

02 Flyover, 03 Destriction, 11 The Art of Movement, 12 Passacaglia

Mirror's Edge — Ambient Electronica by Solar Fields

https://www.youtube.com/watch?start=2248&v=Y05wiQQbFLU

A lot harder to rip. I had to use a tool to do it (and it's a bunch of stems for dynamic playback). It's available commercially, so there's that.

Nitronic Rush and it spiritual successor Distance — EDM

Game is not finished yet so no OST is compiled yet. I think it was pretty easy to pull out of game files.

Tank Universal — Electronica

Had one song I really liked, the rest is okay, "Time"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?start=356&v=z4WE0a496mU I remember ripping it pretty easily from the game assets, "time.ogg" Apparently just go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Tank Universal SteamWorks Edition\SOUND\MUSIC to grab it.

The Unfinished Swan — Orchestra with a tiny bit of synth, sometimes a bit too baroque.

Favorite track: "The Unfinished Swan"

Sunless sea is not a very large game and doesn't get nearly enough attention. Ross if you love Lovecraftian stuff I would recommend a peek at this game. It's soundtrack is also amazingly delicious.

My favorite tracks are Elegiac and Wolfstack Lights

Happy birthday Ross! Thanks for everything you gave us!

So here are a couple favorite tracks from some of my favorite "old" PC games!

I would describe then a bit better if I could but I don't have an idea on how to classify music.

Die Hard Trylogy (The first one for PC/PSX/Saturn):

Garage Theme:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wG3QcmpC_-U

A video with all the remaing tracks:

Track 7 from Starsiege: Tribes (PC):

A playlist of the remaining tracks:

One of my favorite soundtracks (and my favorite video game) is the soundtrack to the neverhood chronicles. You should look it up!

Got some music for you here, sir.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPjr3WoDXlY - Purchase

Some good high energy buttrock that doesn't take itself seriously. Definitely better to experience the soundtrack for the first time while playing the game itself because the music emphasizes the outrageous action sequences in the game. But the music is still fine by itself.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LHLAcd14b4 - Download

Slow but good Orchestral music emulating the sounds of the Industrial era pretty well. Though there are a few background music tracks in here like 'Village' or 'Cave' that are underwhelming.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMtVu-ZtwEk - Purchase

Turn of the 19th Century Music again. Much better than Arcanum's but not as free.

- Purchase

Epic orchestra music about Greek Gods and other such divine matters.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MF2UL41oCgk - Purchase

I don't really know what the hell this is, metal-electronica? I like it though.

Since you didn't limit it to video games only:

(NSFW) Captain Murphy's Duality - Download

Psychedelic Hiphop released as a short film/music video on Adult Swim a few years back. The music and the video work together to show some cult imagined disjointed supernatural being that is Id manifest.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent has a few good tracks.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FifcRD_ugvo

Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs has a larger library of great ones in my opinion. https://jessicacurry.bandcamp.com/album/amnesia-a-machine-for-pigs

FTL: Faster Than Light is pretty good.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygH9VcV7IBg

A lot of people have already recommended Undertale, but there are a lot of songs in the game that don't appear on the official soundtrack. They're mostly just different versions of already existing song, but they're still really cool. Here's an example:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yen4QGoLse4

Even Minecraft has some pretty good tracks. https://c418.bandcamp.com/album/minecraft-volume-alpha

Hope you have fun with those.

You have to listen to the Undertale OST if you haven't, it makes my heart warm :3 (and fills me DETERMINATION)

https://tobyfox.bandcamp.com/album/undertale-soundtrack

Can confirm, Undertale's soundtrack is amazing; although this page doesn't seem to have the full soundtrack.

Some of the tracks that should definitely be listened to on there are

ASGORE (Great boss battle theme)

Home (Calming home music, like being in a house in Earthbound or Legend of Zelda)

Heartache (Another boss battle theme)

Bonetrousle (no explanation)

Waterfall (I feel like it describes an adventure well)

Another Medium (Theme with a lot of anticipation)

Spider Dance (Extremely catchy)

CORE (Late-game area theme that keeps you going)

Undertale (Really nice to listen to-- main theme of the game despite being 71st on the soundtrack)

Bergentrückung/ASGORE (Intense boss battle theme, should fill you with determination)

There are several other really good themes that are absent on this list, like Megalovania, Hopes and Dreams/SAVE the World, Reunited, Finale, and Last Goodbye, but I'd suggest playing the game if you want to hear them-- except Megalovania.

The soundtrack for OutRun never fails to make me smile. So 80s! This was a pretty popular game once, but it's long since forgotten. Even the attempts at nostalgia exploitation with the series are about a decade behind us at this point.

The

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEz1BVeGO2o were definitely the best.

But, even the Sega version was credible!

Sorry I can't find actual downloadable versions, but the place I got these from years ago is no longer hosting them. They are on itunes though!

Long-time viewer who registered just for this post chiming in with A few favorites. Apologies for Youtube, but that's where I listen to most of my music.

First off, the Menu theme from HAWKEN:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwSdSLHi108

HAWKEN is an online multiplayer game where you stomp around in mechs and shoot other people stomping around in mechs. It was fun enough for a little while, but this song was the only thing from it that really stuck with me.

FUCK, I love this music. That bass synth, those drums, that plaintive refrain... This music makes me want to strap into a war machine and go to town with some brothers-in-arms. The fact that it played during the menus was a nice touch; as you prepared your mech's loadout and waited for the next match to pop, the music made it feel like you were really gearing up for war.

The rest of the soundtrack was forgettable (quite literally: I can't remember if there even WAS any more music than this), but this one track will stick with me forever, and has earned a permanent spot on my PvP Youtube playlist.

Second, "Chant" from Dawn of War:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-6dKVNt1C4

Dawn of War is an RTS set in the grim darkness of the 41st Millenium. Gameplay-wise it's mostly same-old RTS stuff, but two things set it apart: it's portrayal of 40k's setting, and a soundtrack by Jeremy Soule.

I have a soft spot for music with a lot of gravitas. Chants, choirs, strings, haunting chords, just give me all of that forever. I also am in absolute love with the Warhammer 40k universe, so this track obviously stands out for me since it relates to both. It kind of summarizes the feeling I look for in that kind of music: Brooding and minimalistic. Just listening to this, I can imagine myself sitting in the cloisters of a Fortress-Monastary as the Chapter prepares for evening services.

Next we have the theme from Bit.Trip Runner 2:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3iaVdBAArk

If you like good music and rhythm games, PLAY BIT.TRIP RUNNER 2: FUTURE LEGEND OF RHYTHM ALIEN. If the name alone doesn't pique your interest, then at least try it for the music.

I am incapable of feeling sad when I listen to this game's soundtrack. It's just so energetic and peppy. The soundtrack as a whole is amazing, but the theme is especially memorable, and you'll hear its leitmotif woven into most of the other tracks. The music really made that game, and I've spent hours struggling through difficult levels on it just so I could hear more.

Next on the list, Our Perception of Beauty (aka Drusera's Theme) from Wildstar:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvrGZwNnFHQ

Wildstar was, at best, a forgettable MMO that predictably languished into F2P Limbo, but it did have a few thing going for it. It was humorous, had some very interesting environments and characters, and it had an amazing soundtrack.

Composed by Jeff Kurtenacker, the music in this game was wildly varied in tone and orchestration, and did a lot to add to the character of the areas you explore and the people you meet. This track in particular stands out to me for the sheer, raw emotion in its theme, and it can still bring a tear to my eye.

And we'll end with an obscure one - The main theme from The Void:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpcLTpIWcEk

The Void is an incredibly unique game (and would make excellent material for a Game Dungeon episode, wink wink) with an equally unique soundtrack. Strange, oppressive synth tones, tribal beats, high, wailing harmonies... this game's music is likely not everyone's cup of tea, but it leaves an impression, regardless. And it only serves to add to the sensations of curiosity, confusion, dread and wonder as you explore the game's environments and meet its characters.

I could likely spend forever listing favorite tracks for games, so i'll leave you with five. Happy Birthday, Ross, and hope you enjoy!

Xenoblade Chronicles for the Wii has one of the best OST of recent years. It is a great mix of orchestral, electronic, and rock rhythms. I HIGHLY recommend you give it a listen. For a good taste of the OST here are a couple of the best tracks.

Let me start off by saying Happy Birthday and that I'm very happy to be able to give you a birthday present :D

Solstice: The Quest for the Staff of Demnos (NES)

I found out about this soundtrack and game recently but it goes pretty fucking hard with its note range and atmosphere for a NES game. I recommend only listen to the first 3 cuts on the soundtrack. This is the core of my share for you as I think it has the best chance of being new to you, and being interesting:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMESKIO6DRc

Age of Empires 2 (PC)

This one isn't the most unknown so you've probably heard of it, but it's one of my favorites of all time so had to put it in just in case:

I recommend to you the Eufloria soundtrack. It's a really bizarre style of music but it's really relaxing. Here's a sample:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jiwjmm1KPVg

Sorry for sending a youtube video. I didn't find a soundcloud of the Eufloria soundtrack. I do own it on steam because I got the game before the HD version though (as well as a free copy of the HD edition, really nice from the devs). But anyway, it's a really interesting soundtrack.

Good Soundtracks? I'm game.

Deemo: a casual game based around music. Many different tracks and styles.

Listen: http://deemo.wikia.com/wiki/Songs_by_Collection (there's a page for each song, with a youtube link for each too)

Cave Story: a small indie game that had a bit of attention for a while. Largely chiptune-y with a variety of tones. The remastered is better in my opinion.

(the following links are ordered by the original soundtrack then the remastered)

QBQBQB: a cute puzzle game. Few tracks but they feel very well made.

Listen and Download: http://rezoner.bandcamp.com/album/qbqbqb

The World Ends With You: a fast-paced combat game on the DS. A heavy emphasis on musical score.

Listen:

Download: itunes does have it, but you can google if you prefer to avoid apple's DRM.

Steins; Gate: a visual novel game about time travel. The soundtrack's mainly accompaniment, except for some great moments of drama (Gate of Steiner's a personal favorite)

Listen:

Download: itunes again.

Happy birthday Ross!

I'm actually new here, but i wanted to start with the right foot.

I wanted to Leave this playlist of an old FLASH game i've played way back.

Seeing that you also play flash games i wanted to share it.

The name of the game is Mardek Rpg, and despite the simple look of the game, i find the music quite good.

Also, the soundtrack is for sale too, the songs in the playlist are some of them, but not all.
