Birthday thread: Soundtracks

Recommended Posts

Happy birthday Ross!

I'm actually new here, but i wanted to start with the right foot.

I wanted to Leave this playlist of an old FLASH game i've played way back.

Seeing that you also play flash games i wanted to share it.

The name of the game is Mardek Rpg, and despite the simple look of the game, i find the music quite good.

Also, the soundtrack is for sale too, the songs in the playlist are some of them, but not all.

You're amazing for mentioning that one. I'm not going to get into the whole "fall of the developer" stuff but that's a big reason why I love that music.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikbdildbB-c

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mv3kPAEmrcA

Amazing soundtracks from both of those games(point and click games, if you're interested!). I don't know if they are for sale but as I said, if you're interested... Wink wink? Would make for a good Point-And-Click Ross' Game Dungeon, I think. Maybe. Anyways, Dreamfall's song "Nothing Hurts Now" is especially amazing. I love it.

I'm not sure if visual novels count but the music for Umineko no Naku Koro ni has a wide variety of different genres for it's soundtrack:

For better rips: http://rokkenjima.tumblr.com/ You only need to download the music box albums to avoid Japanese vocals.

However they're a few spin off albums that are non vocal that I do recommend, Tytania and Amurita come to mind both are by the doujin circle D'va 5 / -45:

If that doesn't count some individual tracks from the Disgaea series stands out:

Natural Selection 2 -- a game no one thinks of because it's a genre that you wouldn't expect to have a great soundtrack. It's epic sci-fi that has some orchestral and "organic" industrial stuff mixed in.

Vangers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0BwsSa8n-o

Vangers, in and of itself, is a great candidate for Game Dungeon. It's an obscure vehicle combat game developed by the Russian studio K-D Labs. It's a game creating something completely alien out of seemingly understandable concepts, abusing the vocabulary and your perception of reality to create a world that works in familiar ways, but... Isn't familiar. It's a game whose first level feels like being born anew, and it's really just the tutorial section.

And its soundtrack's set to match! Using the same vibe as the game itself, the composer mixes weird mechanical and half-organic noises into a very appealing tune, creating something that I, personally, can enjoy, but I can't match it to anything of this world. Could just be my own inexperience with music in general, but it's a soundtrack I just couldn't not recommend.

This particular video is the full set, but it seems distorted somewhat, compared to the actual audio files from the game. Game's available on Steam (fully ported to work on modern systems, but still running at 800x600 resolution in order not to confuse its voxel graphics engine), and the music is easy to retrieve as it's contained openly in a .ogg format, but since the game isn't abandoned and, in fact, is fully functional, I feel like YouTube's the best I should post here.

My obscure game cred is pretty lacking, so most of the recommendations I could possibly make are either definitely things you're aware of and/or already mentioned in this thread. (High five, NotNox.)

But I definitely wanna be the guy to call attention to God Hand https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSfPapsT-BA

and Odin Sphere

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZSECVNkQV8

Both some of my favorite games, and both older, less mainstream console exclusives (the latter is getting remade, but still not for PC and it'll probably still be considered relatively niche).

Aight, so the game this soundtrack is from Re-Volt (1999), which was basically kinda like Mario Kart but with RC cars.

The game itself is kinda hard to get your hands on these days through legal means, and I don't know of any digital retailers who have it available either, unless you count the frankly quite crappy ports done for iOS and Android.

But yeah, about the soundtrack. It's really freaking good. Categorically it would probably be Trance/Goa-Trance, so vocals are pretty rare in this soundtrack, unless you count the few samples that are mainly at the Main Menu track (And I swear, that track is bound to me at this point, couldn't forget it even if for some strange reason I wanted)

But yeah here's the link for a playlist of the soundtrack:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DeTfSCIknCQ

Oh, and even though it's on Youtube, I checked the tracks and they do sound accurate to the real thing quality-wise.

Also, Happy Freaking Birthday.

Unofficial (Yet still fitting) Dwarf Fortress soundtracks (Some are voiced, but they're written in the in-game Dwarven Language, so, it's more like listening to a foreign folk song).

His best ones, in my opinion:

[sound only:]

[Voiced (Dwarvish), by fictional characters Doren, Minkot & Nil Crowskull:]

("Råsh numol libash thol (Die with your [pickaxe] in the deep)")

("Akur akir akam (Champions are rewarded by Fortune)")

("Nåzom, nåzom Umom-lol (Dream on, dream on, Dark One)")

Why does Dwarf Fortress not have music on its own?

It does. It's just this. And it repeats over and over:

Runescape:

Some years back, they had a game overhaul, and that came with actual orchestral! (Back then, it was about two, three guys with a synth.)

Let me make some comparisons:

Happy birthday, Ross!

Guilty Gear Xrd has a pretty kickass soundtrack with a lot of metal. The lead designer of the series is also the composer for it, and a huge Queen fan. You can hear their influence in a couple of tracks. If you can get past the singer's accent and some weird lyrics there's some legitimately good rock and metal there.

The rest of the music is pretty easy to find by looking around on soundcloud.

The recently released PC port on Steam comes with the vocal tracks, which make for pretty rad driving music. Unfortunately the themes used in-game are compressed to keep the game's size from bloating (there are a lot of them), so they don't sound as good as the vocal tracks.

Alright alright alright. Here is some obscure stuff Ross.

--------------------

YU-NO.

Here is the soundtrack in mp3 form.

http://downloads.khinsider.com/game-soundtracks/album/yu-no-super-sound-track

The soundtrack was composed by Ryu Umemoto who unfortunately deceased, Aug 16, 2011. A veteran composer of visual novels and shooters, known for composing the games such as Eve, YU-NO, and Akai Katana. Its strange to me that he only ever worked on sorta seedy titles because the music he made was really amazing. Lots of good old synth music. The music is awesome. YU-NO is actually a super long (80 or so hours) visual novel RPG with an actually good story, it just also happens to have a lot of sex in it. Not gutter trash like the usual guff.

--------------------

1 Song here: http://fortune500.bandcamp.com/album/sailorwave

Song #4 translates to "Sailor Mars" Can download it by clicking mirror: goo.gl/CfbR2S

--------------------

Now for less weeby shit, I'm sorry.

This Diddy Kong Racing Remix Album is absolutely groovy. Listened to it driving to work for MONTHS. Preview music vid in the link, 5 songs. Interstellar Dream Disco is my jam.

http://www.gamechops.com/diddy-kong-racing-bootleg-circuit/

--------------------

Lagrange Point - Famicom

There is the Nintendo Famicom Lagrange Point Soundtrack. What sets it apart from your usual NES chiptunes is it used Konami's VRC7 sound chip containing a YM2413 derivative providing 6 channels of FM Synthesis audio. It was only used in this ONE game to its fullest extent. Never came out in USA. Tiny Toon Adventures 2 kinda used it too, but who cares.

http://downloads.khinsider.com/game-soundtracks/album/lagrange-point

--------------------

How about some old school PC MOD music? I can get you started with one of my favorites from 1991.

You can use http://media.io/ to convert the old school .mod format to mp3 which is handy!

My favorite is Jester - Stardust Memories, a fasttracker mod.

http://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=59344

If you want to hear what it sounds like before downloading:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hY9p1oiE1_Y

You can find some other gems in the top rated section: http://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_rating_comments&query=10

--------------------

Another MOD I really like, enough to post it on youtube myself its a really upbeat song.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8SwWizXomk

This is "Kick the beat" by Andreas Viklund (June 1998). I found it playing an Unreal Tournament 1999 mod called "Monster Hunt" where you go through huge levels with up to 32 other players online in coop shooting the shit out of 1000's of monster, doing puzzles, platforming, beating gigantic bosses.. man its a real blast.

This song plays on one of the user made maps (MH-ShootingGuysObnoxious) and was in the UT game's .UQM music format. Found out who made it using Modplug Tracker which can open .uqm files.

I've hosted the mp3 conversion I made here: https://mega.nz/#!g80AxAKa!kc_HDs_tJhEF0SvK9RadVJNziSro-_zd2hGDtMBQ4mc

The MODS files have a composer's comment section built in so I'll post what it says!

Techno/Rave/Goa mix...
Either you like it, or you hate it...I like it =)
I'd be happy if you sent me some mail: [email protected]

Wonder if that email still works haaha.

Let me start with the soundtracks I've already seen listed a few posts up. I'll post an example song from each soundtrack below it, and every post has a link that shows where you can find it.

  •
  • Skullgirls: This is my favorite soundtrack of all time. It's a fighting game with a jazz-styled soundtrack. I'd recommend the version listed on the bottom of their official site (NOT iTunes), as it also contains the songs from the DLC stages.
    8-dMlDdYxEc

  • Metal Gear Rising: My guilty pleasure. Every song is a metal mix, and the vocal tracks are simply amazing. There are also non-vocal mixes of the vocal tracks. The only problem is that whoever mastered it wasn't paying attention to the spacing, so if you're not listening with a good Equalizer running, the vocals sometimes get muddled in with other instruments :geek:. Can be found on iTunes.
    QTnuw77_vzw

  • Crypt of the Necrodancer (Metal Remix): A great soundtrack made by the one and only DannyB. However, I'm instead going to recommend the Crypt of the Necrodancer Metal Remix done by FamilyJules7x. This was released alongside the main soundtrack on Steam, but the version on bandcamp is way better.
    • Remixed to be actual songs (not like the loop versions on steam, these songs have actual endings).
    • Extra songs not in the steam version.

Trust me, as a person who owns the Steam version, the bandcamp version, and one of the limited printing CD versions, this is a kick-ass soundtrack.

    Note:This is the Steam version.

    Vr8osjpAOFs

[*]Undertale: Someone would probably shoot me if I didn't list this. Bandcamp page.

    ZcoqR9Bwx1Y

Now that those are out of the way, let me list some that I haven't seen on the list yet:

  •
  • Super Meat Boy! - Choice Piano Cuts: Technically this isn't a part of the official soundtrack or game, but I'd be ashamed if I didn't say something about this. Released on DannyB's bandcamp, this remix contains 10 beautiful piano remixes of songs from the official SMB soundtrack. If piano music isn't your thing, hey that's okay; but you should at least give it a look.
Note: Ewwwwwww, there's some weird youtube compression echo crap on this video.
    jEiNs3jv40E

  • Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery: Composed by Jim Guthrie, this soundtrack is an oddity. I don't know how to classify it or describe it, yet there's something about it that I find strangely satisfying.
Note: Ack, youtube pops the audio at the begining of the video.
    2maE_pYdo1U

  • Indie Game: The Movie OST Soundtrack: Surprise! Another soundtrack not actually from a video game. I'm only throwing this in here because if you liked the previous soundtrack, you might also like this as it was done by the same artist.
    3CnMK1Etf9k

  • Grim Fandango Remastered Soundtrack: A jazz heavy soundtrack. The only good version of this soundtrack (the live orchestra version) that I can find is on the game's steam page. Also, who doesn't like Bone Wagon? 8-)
    TPcd6H43c8k 7Fxo7d0Bo-k

  • Gunpoint - The Soundtrack: A (read: another) soundtrack that's entirety jazz songs.
    AASeTbHFvSQ

  • Iji: A small indie game done by Remar, you can find it on his site here. It's what really got me into gaming, so I feel obliged to list it.
    86IxmklUgEM G9H6ULM-Bwg

I have (way (way)) more, but that's already a pretty long list.

EDIT: Almost forgot, Advance Wars: Days of Ruin had some kick-ass songs. The only problem is whoever did the rips made shitty low-quality compressed-to-all-hell copies that every hosting site now uses  . Oh well, they're still pretty good.

So I haven't been here in a long-ass time. Things have probably changed a lot since my last time here. I'll cut the pointlessness and get straight to the point.

I'd be surprised if anyone here knows about this game. The music is from Lisa the Painful RPG, successor to Lisa (the First). The game takes place in an wasteland-ish world where there's no women around. The game's plot, setting and characters revolve around this one fact. While the soundtrack is a bit "gamey" for my taste I still think it catches the game's many themes. If you're into cruel, hard choice, emotion grabbing games, try it out!

I've never actually played the game that this comes from, but this song is from the trailer and I always thought it sounded rad. The game itself seems pretty neat. From what I understand the gameplay is a mesh of Thief, Dishonored, and Splinter Cell. I think the game's mostly unknown because I don't remember hearing much buzz about it from when it first came out even though it advertised itself like like a AAA game. Maybe it released the same time as a more well known franchise did. Anyway, enough rambling. I just wanted to post this since it takes no time to do and you put out some quality videos. I know it's not much, and it might not even the kind of thing you're looking for (I'm guessing you were aiming for something more orchestrated) but I just wanted to show some of my appreciation for what you do. Thanks, and Happy Birthday Ross.

The Ace Combat series of PlayStation (except AC6, you pedants) arcade military fighter aircraft games (don't call it a simulator!) have always been in my go-to bag of music. Some of the tracks do indeed fall into the "this is just in the background so it's not gonna be too interesting" pitfall, but many of them are just great and they come in a myriad of styles and themes depending on which game they're from. Unfortunately, I'm no audiophile and my MP3s came from who-knows-where ages ago, so I can't really get a guaranteed great-quality source, so I'll have to stick to the ease of YouTube. Sorry. Some of them are apparently out on iTunes if you don't mind paying the cult.

Game titles will link to the playlist followed by the style of music the game follows then links to a couple specific tracks I've chosen to stand out. I've tried to filter out ones that are too repetitive (more difficult in the early games), but if you don't mind that feel free to dig through the playlists. I love just about all the music that wasn't used for menus. Asterisks mark my favorite of each game if you want to shave the list to the minimum.

(1995) and
(1997); electronic synth/electric guitar rock. Generally a bit short and looped because we're talking mid-90s here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltAPSxoXg9Q, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGR9gv1KHTQ, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQc49LP_uto (this is the AC2 version, a remix of the one in the first game), https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chX2ZpvS02s, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dZzb9HDEO0, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlZeKfxJgzQ, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ABs_Kw_miw.

(2000). The version of this game released to us English-speakers was mutilated, but its music was left intact; the techno styling means it's very repetitive by nature. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0S5ZpFWA16g, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_UiIO3oAos, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3a-97tjfkYM, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeX4kHPCrCI, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t47XvzN0W5g.

(2001). The first "modern" game. Used grand philharmonic orchestral and choral styled music alongside some retro (to the series) rock styling. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4YnbMuZ4oM, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9G1ob5jnuSo, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMiFQrAQ_Nc, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPgF8mvMvvw, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FKEcnxNyAI, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1sIqCQFKVo; the game's version of a classic choral song.

(2004). Continues AC4's style though more refined, often cited as the best soundtrack of the series. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1sGffD8ft0, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgNGtGI-XbM (remix of "Blockade" from AC4), https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbcpIYnRruA (same tone as Operation Bunker Shot), https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-N_qNSk3P4M, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWasH1hfrws (the piano and strings in this are pure beauty; if there's one song to listen to, let it be this) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71kObmO_eHA.

(2006). Follows the orchestral styling of AC4/5 with a bit more guitar, but throws in the occasional Central American theme. Falls back into repetitivity; honestly I haven't listened to this one much. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1848DY5GqU, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hetwj7PemJs (remixed and greatly toned down in AC6 as "Bartolomeo Fortress"), https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlZvB-wFElI, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtDhQGERc6g (MOAR COWBELL), https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSckBZczS6c, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bm92CA94dg.

(2007). I haven't listened to this soundtrack at all outside of the game, but it's more orchestral and guitar. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntBOpMy2lbA, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFiwzGH04rI, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7K2Of_IRsU (this song sets the baseline for many of the other songs in the game to basically remix), https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SVu-kW5f2Cc, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8L2TsEp-Nxw.

It took me a couple hours to put all this together, so hopefully it was worth it for your birthday. Feel free to PM me with comments.

Hey Ross

Here are a few tracks from games that feature turn based combat

First being a new game I'm playing called Hard West.

It's a game set in the wild west all about deals with the devil, fighting demons, gunfights with desperados and all that sort of thing.

Sorry for them all being youtube links.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9TzXI0YjlQ This is a track that plays during a battle with demons.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Liiln-Dd7Dw This is a track for a more classic 'western battle'

Next is from the game Expeditions: Conquistadors

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZ49tb6-TgE This is a standard battle track, I just love the Spanish flavor of it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugvqAh6XYpA This is a track specific to bosses.

Hope you enjoy them, and happy birthday Ross!

Happy Birthday, Ross!

Here is an obscure one, IMO the best from Tzar: The Burden of the Crown:

The style is medieval, it's based on a national Bulgarian song about tzar Ivan Shisman and the fall of the Second Bulgarian Empire. The game is an RTS from 2000, created by a Bulgarian studio, I'm not sure if it's still for sale.

The song is on a playlist, so in case you like it you can check the others out.

Some of them are good, some of them are hit-and-miss.

Another recommendation I have is the soundtrack from Red Alert 2, which I am 90% sure you must have heard (you've probably even mentioned it somewhere), but I'll share it anyway, just because it's worth it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBOD8qeCBuc [Hell March 2, personal favourite]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqlb0p11RcE [Full soundtrack]

As for a movie soundtrack, I'll go with a mix from Lord of the Rings. I know it's a VERY popular movie, but the Saruman/Isengard theme can only be described with the words EPIC and BAD-ASS once the tempo picks up. I like to listen to it on repeat often.
