Birthday thread: Soundtracks

Recommended Posts

I'll just throw here a few more game soundtracks for which the forum search function didn't return any mentions:

The Worms series has great soundtrack. Worms, Worms 2, Armageddon, 3D, Forts, Blast, World Party, Revolution, Clan Wars, WMD, all of them are good. It's mostly background music, but while most background music is just bland, this one is worth listening to outside the game as well. One example for all:

Solaris 1.0.4, played a demo long time ago, remember it because of the soundtrack:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gngyA89H8kI

It seems that no one mentioned Ace Combat 3:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NofHya92HAo

The forgotten C&C - Emperor Battle for Dune, the game wasted it's potential a bit but soundtrack is excellent:

While Painkiller Hell & Damnation is not that great, the collector's edition soundtrack is:

Spelunky:

C&C Kane's Wrath:

Kyodai Mahjongg:

Aquanox:

I've been meaning to get around sharing this

Lament of the Innocence OST

https://www.youtube.com/watch?start=645&v=_1Tz8DPO-4U

Also I've been replaying KOTOR II recently and this track hit me particularly hard.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__gLIyeQYDU

It's like an introspective lamentation of the game's tragic, rushed development, and what could have been a near-perfect game ( from a story-telling perspective ).

Here's one of my favourite tracks of all times.

Firelake - Fighting uknown (Or Loners' theme from S.T.A.L.K.E.R Clear Sky)

I don't have anything fancy to say about it. It's just beautiful.

Also Battlefleet Gothic: Armada has one of the most epic and memorable soundtracks there are. I really recomend checking it out if you're into that sort of thing.

NYR: New York Race is one of those games that is just gone. It is a racing game based on the 5th Element. I remember it being a blast to play, with incredibly fun music.

I wish I could find any information about the composer, or track names...

There's some really good stuff in this thread. Allow me to post my suggestions:

Some turn-based sweetness:

Not turn-based but should be obscure enough unfortunately

Have you ever heard of "Motorhead" the racing game:

Has imho a pretty good soundtrack:

You can also download it here:

This was made by Olof Gustaffson who also made the Soundtrack of the old Amiga Pinball games.

(In case you dont know them, i really recommend you give them a try:

Have fun :)

I wouldn't exactly call these games unknown or underrated, far from it, but i feel as if the OST to them is a little underappreciated, so I feel like sharing some of my picks.

MANHUNT

The Manhunt 1 OST is something that has always been in the back of my mind, i adore the John Carpenter inspired soundtrack that can go from calm yet eerie to frantic and pure 80s slasher chase scene.

Here is the MediaFire link from the person responsible for the audio rips

https://www.mediafire.com/folder/prvj7v6r8iaiu/Manhunt_Soundtrack

And here is a Mega(dot)nz link if you want a single track in particular and not the whole deal.

https://mega.nz/#F!66oDXI6K!xkAkx-S_BzBkdEc4Cc5vhQ

Here is a sample of my favorite track, played to the sounds of angry red necks stalking you at night.

LOBOTOMY CORPORATION

Can't say the music isn't fitting, it's a toss up between alarms blaring as a monster breaches containment to an orchestral backdrop as there are so many world ending monsters running rampant that there's nothing you can do but sit and watch your workforce get killed.

Here is a link to the audio I was able to grab from the game files. Boss battle music is missing, but since those are mostly licensed songs purchased I doubt the developers would like those being so exposed.

https://mega.nz/#F!TrADDK7C!zuKch2Ah1fXJNJbu57OqxA

This is the song most people joke about, since it's usually played when the situation gets out of control. Played to the sounds of birds, aliens and mutants loitering in the halls.

BIOSHOCK 2

Again not exactly unknown, low budget or underappreciated, but I spent a very long time looking for the ingame soundtracks, as in not the licensed songs used for the radios, but instead the music down by the composer named Garry Schyman. Specifically, the music that plays in the levels when you're pitted against a horde of enemies coming after your little girl.

Here is a link to the audio I've extracted, note that I'm currently in the process of pulling out as many songs, dialogue and sound effects I can and I have no clue on how to use mega(dot)nz properly for precision linking. Look into 'Protector Trials' to reach the OST.

https://mega.nz/#F!CnoHQAJb!WYJzQMtrEUC1gd_lWmD8Tg

It was this track in particular I spent a long time shifting through files to uncover, and is seemingly nowhere to be found online from what I've seen. Played to the sounds of a horde drug addicts coming at you down a dark hallway to shank you.

I'm late, I know, but I didn't see this soundtrack mentioned here, and it should be

Now Ross, this might be qualified as torture. Not only is this Youtube, by the video description, "The music was extracted from RES/R1.RES at 22050hz 8-bit mono".

And I don't usually trust Youtube comments too much, but this one seems informative: "The music of Sim Isle was intended to be high quality RedBook CD Audio. The music was composed by Harry Holmwood, and recorded on 48khz 16 bit Stereo DAT tapes. For players who couldn't do a full install of the game (over 300 MB, which was fairly big by 1995 standards), a compressed version of the music in 22khz 8 bit Mono was created and stored among the game data, but somewhere in development the original DAT tapes were lost and the low quality mono version was used as the CD track instead."

So what you will listen on Youtube is very close to what you hear when playing the actual game. I know because I spent a few hundred hours playing it.

I enjoy this soundtrack, a lot of this liking is due to nostalgia, but I'm also the musical equivalent of a greasy spoon regular: pops and clicks are not a big issue for me, and i think compression artifacts can be charming. And going by your videos Ross, this soundtrack might be too greasy for your taste.

Hello everyone.

Not sure if anybody cares, but an MMO that died in 2015 had some alright music.

It was called Madoka Magica Online, and nobody on Youtube has a decent quality version of the OST.

That's why I decided to gather all the individual pieces I know of and share. It took a bit of work, and for a while I didn't think I'd ever find them, but thankfully someone on Nico uploaded a few of these.

http://www.mediafire.com/folder/atdw693kjm8wf/Madoka_music

"Walpurgis Night Event" has a choir. I'm not sure if Ross is okay with that since he didn't want any lyrics, but apparently this is sang in a made up language, and it's sort of in the background. Hope that's not against the rules. If it is I'll remove it.

Some of these have some small clicks, which is unfortunate, but those are the best quality files I've found. The game is dead so I don't think it's possible to get better ones. But I would love to be wrong on this.

I'm sure there are still some tracks missing.

Well, despite all this time, it never ocurred to me to share this, but here it is.

This game, a F2P FPS had a diferent OST but was later replaced, and fortunately, also made optional to use the new or the old soundtrack. The new one is the superior soundtrack, the old one sounds like something out of a splinter cell '02 copy cat, not bad, but you arent missing much.

Operation 7 New Soundtrack.

"menuBGM0"

Also, another track, it's actually more or less the exact same tune as "menuBGM0" but with a more chill sound and different instruments.

"menuBGM1"

On the video description there are links to the lossless tracks. Well, perhaps not really lossless, i dont know, but the files were ripped directly from the game files so quality is as good as it gets.

I also recommend Resident Evil games save room themes. This is pretty standard so i bet you know about them, but just in case you don't, check them.

So I  know Castlevania is a very well known series, but Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness seem to never get any love. Almost every track in these games are fantastic,  so Im posting 2 of my favorites below but there are plenty of  songs in each game that are worth listening to.

Check out this two OSTs (they're full game OSTs with loading and menu themes so skip tracks if you get bored):

It's the A.I.M. series (aka Mechminds) about AI civilization of machines forsaken by their creators (humans), left on a terraformed planet to evolve and perfect themselves through planetary combat situations.

You take the role of a mechanoid AI put into a glider - a battle hovercraft. It's a Privateer/Elite kind of game, with hovering instead of flying in space.

This thread isn't dead until people stop posting, dang it!

Just about every game in the Ace Combat has incredibly good music, 7 being the most recent. You can find downloads for all of their soundtracks at Khinsider.

(In particular I'd recommend also looking at the soundtracks of Ace Combat 04, Ace Combat 5, and Ace Combat Zero, all of which are on that site as well.)

On an unrelated note, Boneworks also has a great synthy soundtrack. As far as I'm aware, you can only download it by buying it through Steam, but I'm sure you can work something else out if need be.

I make stuff. Look at it at https://www.youtube.com/user/MadmanEpic. Or don't. I can't really tell either way.
