ROSS'S GAME DUNGEON: LIFE IS STRANGE DEMO

Recommended Posts

Hey Ross, loved the new Game Dungeon, good review as always! When you asked what music the viewers listen to, I had to make an account and suggest some of my favorites.

My all-time favorite band, Enslaved, makes some pretty badass music within the metal genre that I think you will enjoy, and hey, they're releasing their new album tomorrow.

Here are some of my favorites:

Ok... This was completely unexpected, even coming from Ross.

When he said "back to school special" at the end of the Hinterland video I thought he would do a very obscure edutainment game, or even Sonic's Schoolhouse considering we are close to Halloween (because, honestly, that game is creepypasta material). Was not expecting Life is Strange at all, especially considering that Game Dungeon focus a lot on games that aren't that well known.

I have this game downloaded on my Xbox 360, although I was not the one who played it (my sister bought the console second-hand from a friend, and it came with some games in it, and I think this is one of them), I considered picking up this to play on a occasion. And... WOW! From the little you've shown of the game, my expectations for the story really dropped. The way everyone is antagonistic towards Max and the fact that the writing doesn't help that much to feel simpathy for her kinda reminds me of Mystery of the Druids, except that game can reach "so bad it's good" territory for the most part. Well, I admit, at least Max isn't so bad even if she manipulated time and space to make a paint bucket splash over the "queen-bitch" of the school because she was on her way, and maybe have the painter being fired in the process. Because at least she isn't detective Halligan, who downright poisoned a drunk hobo with alcohol taken from the forensic labs so he can STEAL his change to make a phone call, with high chances of said hobo being killed because of that, and also because of OTHER atrocities Halligan commited for the "greater good".

Actually, this review kinda gives me motivation to play the game for myself, but with "car crash syndrome" mentality, and I will admit that's kinda bad since I want to form my own opinion.

Progressive rock! There's a lot of bands I really like, including Coheed & Cambria ("Welcome Home" and "Gravity's Union" are the best, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4zw9qMLKUg), Thank You Scientist ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LK8JgjNxumo), Dream Theater ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZKrwJzGg0k), etc.

But my number one favorite band is The Mars Volta. Their stuff is fucking insane.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyUMHEua7-A

Don't mind the lengths...

These are all specifically metal rather than rock, but other than that, some pretty good progressive stuff going on here, except for Coheed and Cambria. I don't really see hear what's so progressive about them. They just sound like a straight-forward "alternative" metal band to me.

Thanks, Ross.

I've had Episode 1 in my "to play" list on Steam for a while now. But after watching this GD I know I can safely remove it. You saved me a couple of wasted hours that I'd rather waste on other games. The worst I expected was that I wouldn't be able to identify with a young teenage girl, not that I wouldn't be able to identify with a badly written hipster. What a cringefest. And once again VtMB beats a modern game in the facial animations department.

UPD. 28.05.18 - Added Israel Nash

Great episode, thanks, Ross.

I'm mostly a fan of 60s-70s-80s-90s rock music (and that's what I've been listening to in my school years (I'm 24 now)), however I enjoy all kinds of styles. There's obviously lots of good stuff nowadays, though I can't say I have many favourite modern artists or bands....more like songs or albums. Still, here's some of them:

Treetop Flyers, great British folk-rock band:

Haunted House -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKcRT0ZHo2M

Dance Through The Night -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_D9I6CNlcUk

St Andrews Cross -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-HDCp0_bwE

Chris Robinson Brotherhood, basically modern day Grateful Dead, Chris Robinson was a lead singer in 90s-00s blues\hard rock band The Black Crowes:

Beware, Oh Take Care -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZpgLuqQUKI

Badlands Here We Come (Live on WFPK) -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdQMSHoSDWY

Sorrows Of A Blue Eyed Liar -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYEVqlFDjBo

Shadow Cosmos -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZx3MSXMXKk

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, an awesome australian psychedelic/garage rock band:

Gamma Knife -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nC7ii3Ir-no

Rattlesnake -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-i1XZc8ZwA

Work This Time -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDqgyxw0igs

Polygondwanaland (FULL ALBUM) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPZ6u6MCdnk, their last album at the moment (4th out of 5 planned for this year). Great stuff, ecpecially the second half - starting at 20:38.

Royal Headache, an Australian punk rock band, their second album "High" is amazing (just listen to the ballad "Woudn't You Know"): High (Full Album) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g82vSnrquLo

Israel Nash - one of my recent discoveries. Very talented guy, makes beatiful music. People say he sounds like Neil Young. Here's my Youtube playlist with his best songs from his two best albums: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYxJW8XKAFw&t=0s&list=LLovZbPyDLJnrSsm489fv9-A&index=21

Rival Sons, basically modern day Led Zeppelin, and pretty good at that:

Thundering Voices - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRa7H3QNQIo

Belle Starr - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrM_2mnpNdg

Manifest Destiny Pt. 1 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-WixPqBIZQ

Fleet Foxes - American folk-rock, quite hipsterish, but you can't deny beautiful melodies:

Mykonos - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DT-dxG4WWf4

The Shrine / An Argument - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yAxIdkF2Qo

Anyone Who's Anyone - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkxXeEZcx5g

Algiers, they're a quite great and possibly unique combination of post-punk and gospel overtones:

Some Riot - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_kk9WZ2zLw

Charge - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nghmOMdL4fM

Hey Collosus, actually I've only listened their 2015 album, but these are awesome alternative rock\metal songs:

Hop The Railings - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOXvr6PZW-A

Radio Static High - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJjtjnc9lK8

Memories Of Wonder - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDuVic9ouuk

Kaiser Chiefs, yeah, I like those guys, at least their first 4 albums, don't know if I should be ashamed of that:

Oh My God - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54DtVXjk2jY

Club Foot - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lk5iMgG-WJI

Ovary Stripe - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BcrGHemwdg

eez-eh - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ST6nEvIEY4s

Poets Of The Fall, well, not really, but the songs they recorded for Alan Wake (as Old Gods Of Asgard) are awesome (and Late Goodbye, obviously):

Children Of The Elder God - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5vCwr9KGtw

Balance Slays The Demon - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJvgbNPhASo

The Poet And The Muse - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwaeOH04GQE

The War On Drugs, psychedelic band that likes 80s sound:

Holding On - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-oHBkikDBg

I Was There - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QG7X4IvAmKU

Miracle Of Sound, it's a one-mans band, an Irish guy, who creates songs being inspired by various games and films, he's good and plays various styles from synth-pop and hip-hop to country and power metal:

Commander Shepard - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HeY-2ovpF9c

You In Color - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNX3zABpw6k

Don't Play With Guns - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZvzZUmANxc

And although I'm not quite familiar with this bands\artists in general, this songs definitely deserves a mention:

The Crystal Caravan - Hour Of The Wolf (followed by the rest of the album. What a riff, man) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpaREqp9HVg

The Horrors - Sea Within A Sea - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1lD5cE6Bwc

Future Islands - Lighthouse - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=murWQgA-qNI and Ran - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlQunle406U

As a bonus - 3 very atmospheric tracks, 2 of which are from 1986:

First, great instrumental from Borderlands 2 OST - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lbiafz7QIh0

This is just really beautiful atmosperic track by Shriekback - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNPMlq7emEk

You ought to dig this spacey ambient like atmospheric intro! Backing vocalists are kind of annoying, but hey, don't they remind you of Armed & Delirius soundtrack? Great song - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLRuFLwYqfQ

It's been a while, but here's my assignment. I'm mostly a 50's to 80's guy, half of them being the soul stuff and classic rock my dad listens to, the rest being prog rock, hard rock, reggae, and metal. I never got on with the alternative stuff, or bands like MCR for some reason, Lately, i'm going through a shitty phase, and coinciding with that, I've been delving further into metal, just some way to let out some shit. I've listened to the well known ones such as:

Metallica, Megadeth, Judas Priest, and Pantera.

From the ones not everyone know of, I got:

Mercyful Fate: Black Metal group from Denmark, they go way back in the 80's. Just got into them lately after hearing Metallica cover a medley of their songs. Satanic vibes from them, their vocalist, King Diamond has that shriek that gives it a unholy vibe. For a taster, here's Metallica playing the Mercyful Fate medley with 4/5ths of Mercyful Fate guesting.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvVmPmM3M3w

Alestorm: I think Ross will like this. It's metal with a pirate theme, what more can you say? Over The Seas from their debut album sums up what they're all about for me.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69U9P8AfwB8

Van Canto: A capella metal, it's pretty much Pentantonix, but WAY hardcore. Even the guitar solos are done via distorted voice. I recommended these two, Stora Rövardansen and King.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXzIATlXL0s

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5den55B5D7w

Sabaton: Power Metal and War. Each of their songs tell stories about different battles from different wars. This song in particular, Primo Victoria talks about the Normandy landing at D Day.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZm4zseMok0

That's the extent of modern stuff I've been hearing, besides Mercyful Fate.

There's nothing quite like a decision making game with NPC's that don't believe you. An unexpected but good review, I had the same frustrations with the game.

Also that chromatic aberration filter. A game about photography should be all about avoiding things like that shouldn't it? Might as well have the whole thing out of focus and underexposed.

So this is Life is Strange? I'd been hearing about this one a lot back when it came out and I can't believe all the hooplah was over... that. I got nothing against the fans of this game, but to me it just looks and feels uncomfortable.

So, high school for me was 2007-2011 and I started out as a metalhead that mostly liked only the classics. Ross probably knows them already, but might as well bring some links to the table anyway. Branched out into electronic and hip-hop later.

Good to see Prog get its respects! That being said, most of these guys are a bit heavy for me, or I get bugged by their vocals (Spock's Beard and Thank You, Scientist are definite problems for me in this regard. I'd love Spock's Beard if they made a karaoke version, since their instrumentation is great). I've been scrounging for some modern Prog, since the old stuff can only stay fresh for me for so long, but haven't found much I like outside one band called Wobbler. Any recommendations for someone who preferred more of the less heavy 70's sound?

Oh I getcha. But I can't really think of any modern music that's just like what you're looking for, stuff that sounds like Yes, Genesis and King Crimson. I guess I'll let you know if I do manage to find something, but I doubt it.

These are all specifically metal rather than rock, but other than that, some pretty good progressive stuff going on here, except for Coheed and Cambria. I don't really see hear what's so progressive about them. They just sound like a straight-forward "alternative" metal band to me.

Yeah, my way of labeling music is way too skewed for me nowadays, and that was my attempt. I'm sort-of in my own world when it comes to that kind of thing. That and I'm becoming more of a metalhead nowadays, so that changes some things.

And I think I'll mention one more band called Godspeed You! Black Emperor. I doubt anyone is really into this since they're actually an avant-garde "music collective". But I would say they provide something kind of interesting and powerful for those patient enough and willing to stick around. Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven is a classic.

Would anyone mind if I created a sort of graph (spectrum) using covers of the music people have posted? That way we could really get a good feel of the kind of music Gen Z (or just the Accursed Farm's audience) listens to.

Besides, I love sorting ;)

Might be alone here but it's bothering me slightly that the last couple Game Dungeons have differently formatted titles

This game is almost uncanny to me, it's like it was made by a bunch of writers whose only knowledge of high school comes from social media and sitcoms. It seems like they got some of the worst parts of high school correct though, or at least close enough to freak me out a bit while watching this.

I got out of high school in 2013, and my musical tastes were kind of all over the place back then. I think I mostly liked listening to video game soundtracks and metal, but I was also into some orchestral stuff and swing music among other things. I don't even know specific names for any of the genres or bands, I guess i'm kind of weird in that I never really care about who the band or composer is as long as the music sounds nice. The only ones I remember specifically are Stompy Jones (modern swing band), Strident (some kind of metal), all of the Command and Conquer soundtracks ever, and Tchaikovsky.

An easier way to describe it would be to say I enjoy everything a stereotypical goth would like combined with some of what an average greaser would like if they were transported 50 years back in time, then 100 years forward.

Ross, there was a man in Life is Strange who you did not recognise, but you thought that he looked like a politician. I think that you may have thought that because he looks like Richard Nixon.

Ross, I'm totally with you on this game. I pushed through the cringe at the beginning, and it really only gets marginally better. I'm 22, I'm only a little older than this generation and have plenty of friends who only recently graduated high school, NOBODY talks like the characters in this game. Nobody. I'm blown away by the fact that people listened to the dialog and thought "Yeah, that sounds like something a human would say." I wrote a steam review saying similar things to what you said, and ended up getting pretty railed in the "helpfulness" category. My biggest issue is that there are so many better graphic adventure games than this one. The Vanishing of Ethan Carter and Ether One, to name a couple. Hell, I even played a short indie game called A Wolf in Autumn that had a better plot, despite its roughness.

I would LOVE to see your reaction to the ending of this game, which,

is a letdown of Mass Effect 3 proportions

. Also, in Highschool I listened to Mastodon a hell of a lot. They're a fantastic band if you like old norse lore, metal, and some mixed in silliness when it comes to their music videos.

But yeah, you're not alone, this game is a slog of bad taste and wonderful visuals.

Okay, I totally agree with Ross on this one, and had almost all the same exact criticisms when I played the first episode.

Then I watched

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19xgdLF5agU. Even if you don't have any interest in Life Is Strange at all, I highly recommend this video on a deconstruction of its genre. Some of the best twenty-five minutes I've ever spent watching a youtube video.

As far as music goes, you cannot go wrong with the bird and the bee. Like, damn.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LaonHYT6cOo was their debut, and boy was it an excellent re-introduction to seventies funky synth-pop. And it doesn't stop.

Let's keep on with the trippy

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhDVSiidt_4 and its best friend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wxuQ9szJ3A. We branch off into the meditative with https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMz4B7W4qAA, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCAqoMT_mts, and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJzjsaguv2I. And of course, there's nothing like blasting off to the weekend side by side with https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mByeVjdZVr4 or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5g7JZozF6zQ.

Not to say that the bird and the bee are the only group that I listen to. Alvvays is respectable, between the yearning of

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAn3JdtSrnY and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CV7OVcOHJwg.

In a similar insufferably indie fashion, we stretch into the hazy morning of

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KFxQKtmYM4 with the Bad Bad Hats, meeting in an awkward, dramatic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOfol6Wqcew between https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysbqHwLWpH8 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5bEfMeeDf8.

Hope you're not noticing the embarrassingly apparent theme between these tracks and artists. Okay, let's take a hard left into Cake's twitching

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p99a6K81zqM and vindictive https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRZzUh9hcTo. We'll revel in the energy of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uwjsG0cRf0 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7aDstrDMf0 before collapsing into the guttedness of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzmZoEYW0e8 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pj1Kx7AI_rw.

I've got range! Let's go lackadaisical with Ezra Furman's

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvfI6Q5WFT0. Maybe Lady Lamb's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMadelP88VA? Does Jonathan Coulton make you https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zidiWe9yq88? Do Hall and Oates make you wonder why https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpR8r0D2EyY? This is a lot. Maybe we're like San Cisco and spending https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLCaVZ3fmU0. What do you want from me? I'm not creative enough to fit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZFfLPzSfl0 into a sentence!

That should be the majority of my breadth. I hope some people find the odd half an hour to dig through this, they might find something they like within my insufferably indie range.

I get a sinking feeling whenever I see that Ross is doing an episode on a contemporary game. This isn’t what I come to him for.

I don’t believe Ross when he says this was a bait and switch; two minutes of research could’ve told him that he was guaranteed to hate it. I haven’t played the game, but I can tell that this is the sort of thing that simply wasn’t geared toward people like him and maybe me too.

I think that Ross is hurting his case for being an ethics advisor to EA when he makes an argument in favor of sacrificing the blue haired girl to bring about social change in the school. More and more, I get the impression that Ross’s worldview is so utilitarian that I really wouldn’t want to be stuck on a desert island with him. I thought the same thing in the stream when he was talking about Starship Troopers, where he didn’t get white people in the book were so concerned about democracy when there was an emergency.
