Things that you hate to see in games.

Recommended Posts

I just wanted to say, I LOVE TF2 HATS! But don't click that -rep button just yet, let me explain why. I love TF2 hats because all the poor, gullible bastards that payed money for a virtual hat that does nothing at all is what made TF2 free to play for people like me. And I for one love free stuff, especially video games.

I have the perfect comeback. A Spaz-12.

I hate for TF2 servers to kick me because my ping is 255 milliseconds and the limit is set at 230. I live in the other side of the freaking world. What do you expect? Never had any issues playing in the servers that do accept me for who I am... or rather, what my ping time is :P

Your ping on my server was in the 220's last time I saw... Didn't seem to slow anything else at all though, but that could just be because I have a great system running it...

Speaking of TF2 servers, I despise: fake server counts, bad/spammy maps, instaspawn, low gravity, premium, server slots, and those gigantic populations, like 34.

I also despise servers that allow you to have about 5 Snipers. Takes the fun of the game and sucks it dry.

Well, my server has a 1/8 gravity reduction, fast spawn, and no class limitations... How do you like it?

try it as a melee class. I've beaten a few teams like it but it's god damned annoying to fight a feral+resto shammy/druid combo. As UH, my best card is necrotic strike spam but good luck if you can stay on the healer to make use of that what with all the roots, cyclones, and hexes flying about the battle. Hand of freedom only goes so far. I reformed my UH/holy dk/pally team. Our arena rank is low but the teams we fight are about 1900-2100 rank(due to both our personal ratings from last season) and ALL we ever fight are healer+feral and it's getting old. -.- I do agree that they deserve some attention ofter 3 expansions of sucking in pvp, but good god.

I see Ferals getting nerfed but my thought is who's next in line to receive the retard buff up?

Yeah, melee vs that is impossible...

Next one they'll buff is bound to be warriors... Next nerf will probly be pallys.

They should just buff hunters, then nobody will complain about balance.

Don't insult me. I have trained professionals to do that.

The low gravity is barely noticeable; I meant when you jump and you fly ridiculously high. It makes stairstabbing as a Spy semi-impossible. As for the fast spawn, I don't mind that. It's instaspawn (namely defending on payload maps; makes defending too easy and dying too forgiving) that I detest. As for the class limitations, the population is usually small, and I find that other AF users are often sensible enough to not have 5 Weighted Companion Snipers on their team.

I hate turret sections. They limit player control and are all around boring and I really wish developers would just quit using them.

I would prefer if turret sections had a choice. In the way that you can resume running around and shooting just by pressing the use key again or something. It makes no sense to be physically stuck to a mounted gun and your character refuses to go for cover even when death's shadow slowly crawls over his back. FEAR 2 had two, both equally horrible sections like that (The rock music during the latter one was so embarrassingly pathetic that Picard barely survived his facepalm. But I digress.). I had to lower the difficulty from hard to easy to prevent my forehead from getting hot enough to melt iron. Many of them give pretty much no room for error, you either have to be very lucky or die repeatedly and slowly build a "map" in your mind of where every enemy pops out and when. That is not my idea of fun.

I have to say it's not so much that turrets are overall bad, but it's just that no one uses them in a good way.

I personally think they can be an interesting aspect of the game but they're just not given enough attention to actually be good. Turrets in HL2 were really fun to use, mainly because of the seamless transition between controlling or not controlling the turret. As Bjossi said, the main flaw is the lack of choice.

And don't forget turrets on vehicles. BF:BC2 did a hell of a good job with those in my opinion.

There are also the sections in the uncharted games where you're firing rockets from a turret on the back of a moving car. Those are pretty awesome.

Mounted-gun-on-a-moving-vehicle are fine as long as the driver doesn't have the IQ of a brick wall. I'm sure many of us have begged the driver to stop at some point but naturally he doesn't hear us and drives happily right past that would-be convenient cover, living with the false knowledge that the gunner is someone who can take more beating than a heavily armoured tank with a scifi shield on top.

Duke Nukem Forever has a couple of turret sections where all you do really is aim and shoot. On Insane difficulty, those sections in particular are near impossible though. In some places whether you wanna use a turret or not is optional.

That's just developers taking in line of CAll of Duty's "REALISM SO COOL GRAPHICS AND CINEMA." And being casual for everyone to play.

They make books for people who like books.

They make movies for people who like movies.

WHY DO THEY TRY TO MAKE GAMES FOR EVERYONE EXCEPT THE PEOPLE WHO DO LIKE GAMES?!

First two are not always true...

Though currently you're right, it seems most devs are making games for casual audiences, or Call of Duty zombies (which don't count as gamers). The few titles that everyone cares about are the ones bold enough to create fun original games.

Makes sense, the casual market is where the money is at.

Protecting NPCs. This would not be so bad if they were better at defending themselves than my grandmother's parakeet and better at strategy than Johnny Bravo. But reality is that the NPCs you have to protect are completely unaware of the player's existence most of the time. They will run blindly into all the scripted ambushes and will experience certain death unless you are either a) ahead of them or b) the NPC in question has died so often and failed your mission that you know through muscle memory where every enemy is spawned.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl handled this really well. One NPC mentions he's not a good shot, and you have to escort him. (Well, you don't HAVE to, but still) However, he actually is a pretty good shot, smart and tough enough to avoid being killed so easily by nearly anything you come across.

If developers did it like this, it'd make escort missions SO much better. Or they could do like MGS3. Where they can be healed, not "instant death" when shot, and if you still don't desire to do a lot, you can tranq or knock out the NPC and drag them through the level.

Most of these were taken from other users. But it IS things you hate to see in games.

MMO's Monthly Subscribtion - What, it's not enough that I paid for the fucking disc in the first place? I have to pay MORE MONEY to join the game. Also, XBOX live is the same, gold membership to play online. Fuck. That.

"The infamous ten second flashlight."

Whenever it's not fully tested and doesn't work right. Bully: Scholarship Edition, for XBOX 360. As of now, still no good patch for it. (There is one but it's said to not do anything or WORSEN the problem) This is one of the worst. Cracked (of course, genius writers) puts it best: "This is like having to ask McDonald's to cook the burger before they serve it to you..."

The only ones who can get by with this is any game released on STEAM, as more often than not, it's constantly updated and patched. (TF2, HL2, CS:S are prime examples.)

Save points: Some of us have shit to do. We NEED to be able to save anytime, anywhere. Another user put it best: "Don't rob us of quicksave or save anywhere just because a few people will abuse it." On the same vein - A SINGLE save file.

When companies release a half-assed game with thousands of things missing, which they then release in hundreds of different DLC's for $10-20 USD each release to fill in the blanks with what should have fucking been there in the first place.

Unskippable Cutscenes - This is the MOST aggravating thing. Especially before a hard boss fight. Or whenever a game has a long intro and you're playing it through again.

Whenever your character cannot jump. It'd only make sense if they were weighed down. Like Batman: Arkham Asylum. No signs of being hindered by weight, yet he still cannot jump.

Whenever you have to go on a fetch quest for something, as opposed to just convincing the person to give it to you anyway, threatening them for it, or killing them for it. Oh, or stealing - Several RPG's actually handle this well.

"Heart Attack" - Whenever a character is killed, their ragdolled body just slumps to the floor, like he just had a heart attack and died. We want our weapons to create WOUNDS! It's possible, it's been done in House of the Dead, if it was possible then, it's possible now.

Not being able to play splitscreen: Why the hell do the consoles boast multiple controller use if the games are made to only use one? This is retarded! The point of this is so obvious: Greed. They want to force users to play lan with 4 consoles and 4 copies of the game if they want to play together. (Or share 1 controller. "When you die it's my turn")

Poor escort missions: As said in my previous post, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl handled it exceptionally well.

Cheap "Locked door" portions. Where the door is magically locked. Like the whole game world hates the PC's guts.

Shoddy ports - Is it too much to ask that it be altered to better fit the system?

There was really no reason for Batman to jump just because in AA. You jump and roll and dodge and that's all you really need to do. Technically, you DO jump up to grab ledges and jump over or off them. Basically, you jumped when you needed to jump. I think your problem stems from you just wanted to jump anytime just because you could. Though I agree about a lot of other games not letting you jump for any particular reason.
