Things that you hate to see in games.

I HATE puppies, love and sunshine.

I agree the multiplayer wasn't necessary and I'd rather have they spent that time on the Singleplayer. HOWEVER, regardless of the flaws(and good god the multiplayer is flawed), I still have a great time playing MP. I have a lot more fun with that MP than I have with other "good"(good as in 8-9 scores by critics) MPs(*cough*CoD*cough*). And the SP didn't feel like it was about the politics anyway. It was more about the connection between Eleanor, Sofia and you. Gameplay wise I can agree that it was barely and improvement from the first one(though, plasmid/weapon wielding, improved hacking and the little sister gathering are very welcome).

So how about the entire level that you walk through as puppet A.Ryan talks about the "parasites" that seems like a parody of the original Andrew, or the main villain being a socialist that's only character trait is she's really, really evil and she hates all capitalists. There's no depth to the characters and no reason to care for Eleanor apart from "you should care for her because we said so", the devs never make an attempt to grow the bond between yourself and your daughter and the plot twist is there because Bioshock did it.

Actually, everything is there because Bioshock did it. The game never takes any risks and instead of just taking what made the original great and expanded on it with way more content (see Fallout 1 to Fallout 2), it just copies the previous game because the developer the game was palmed off to weren't skilled enough or brave enough to include their own ideas and unique concepts into the game.

A.K.A it's a sequel because Bioshock sold well. Not because Bioshock required a sequel, just because they could squeeze more money out of the franchise. I hold higher hopes for Infinite.

Also, I HATE kitties, punch old women and disobey the law.

To each his own I guess. I loved it and think it is money well spent.

Funny you should mention that, because the actual ending of Bioshock(1) is baaad.

Games that didn't have NEARLY enough effort put in as it's predecessor. Read Alyxx's review of Dreamfall for what I mean by that.

Games that weren't meant to be played for single player so single player hardly gets any say in reviews and has even less effort to boot. ('m looking at you Call of Duty)

After going through intense reflexion, i believe im the sort of guy who enjoys more a game with excellent story than anything else.

That why i dislike games with a story that:

1 Does not allow you to interact with it even one bit

2 Tries to hammer an opinion inside your head without presenting good arguments

3 That builds a gigantic hype but in the big picture is just an overly used concept

4 Does not make you think about it

I guess thats why i think Human Revolutions was a best game than skyrim this year, the imperial vs stormcloaks war just feel so stupid, even the developers mock it, i recall one of the companions stating "Who cares for the honor of a man-god who died hundreds of years ago, give me something worth drawing my sword for" or something like that.

I honestly doubt many people play Skyrim for the story. I for one care so little, I didn't even know there was a "war" going on between the Imperials and Stormcloaks until I had to debate with the babies to solve the whole dragon deal(if you'd played the main story you know what I'm talking about, and my god, it is like arguing over who gets the top and who gets the bottom in a bunk bed).

This. I also agree with Kirk about Bioshock 2.

I always go for games with good story, but unfortunately games and good story rarely mix. Most games with a good story end up being full of cut scenes which removes the, y'know, game part of it.

Very few games have the ability to present a good story without turning the game into a movie, games such as Bastion, Half Life, Half Life 2 and Silent Hill 2 are games that utilize the medium's true potential by combining storytelling, and gameplay. I placed Bioshock amongst those who combined story and gameplay well (but not great) but Bioshock 2 seems like a parody of the first one. I doesn't contain any of the depth or detail that the original one had and therefore fails to tell a compelling story.

On the gameplay side of things, hardly anything changed since it's predecessor (which was rather lackluster in the gameplay department anyway).

Human Revolution is a game that aspires to be as good as the original Deus Ex, I believe it trumps it story-wise but Human Revolution's story is hindered by the rather lacking in the first place. When it's there it's good but it's just not there enough. The original Deus Ex made up for it's lack of storyline with a compelling environment that caused the player to deduce what happened through notes or cosmetic details to create miniature stories that gave the world far more depth and intrigue than HR did. Of course the gameplay in Deus Ex is far better and deeper than Human Revolution but it also requires greater intelligence to understand and is less easy to get a grip of than HR.

Skyrim is very similar to the original Deus Ex, in that it not only tells many stories with a greater, over-arching plot. It also leaves subtle hints to smaller stories that take place within the universe without you actually taking part in them, as with all TES games the story lies not in the main plot, rather it takes place all across the game's world. It pales in comparison to Fallout: NV's stories, but it is still very competent and in it lies the true way that storytelling in games can suceed, rather than almost every other game's failure at emulating films and novels, both of which are far more competent at telling stories in a linear fashion than the horrible attempts made by most developers.

lack of storyline? The main story is all around the game, and it is a damn good one. The notes are not there to merely tell some pointless story, but to show the effects of the actions of the elements of the main story over the common folk, the information you find creates all that "conspiracy" feeling because it relates itself with the main story, and shows the true nature of agencies like UNATCO and the NSF and the whole government, even through they have idealistics visions where they will save the world from all evil, the notes show that they are part of the evil themselves.

Not really, in Deus Ex, those "smaller stories" are there to support the main story, what makes the ending way more rewarding.

In Skyrim, those "smaller stories" overwhelm the main story, even some of the miscellanous missions are far more interesthing than the main story itself, the main story just barely drags itself through the game.

You can say that it is to be expected in a TES game and that it is a way to stop the players from rushing through the game, but sacrificing the main story is a real cheapy way to do that, and Deus Ex didnt sacrifice its main storyline

Well, it's because both games are trying to be different things. In Skyrim they're trying to replicate real life by basically sticking a country in a box, all of the miniature stories and guild stories etc. aren't there to overwhelm the main story, they're there to create the sense of a real, living world. One that you actually want to defend. These smaller stories that don't revolve around the main plot don't further the stories progression, rather they richen the environment and recreate a world in which a player can get fully immersed into.

In comparison, the original Deus Ex wanted to create a far more focused story. Also, I disagree with you saying that the smaller stories where there to develop the main plot. Most of the time they were just there so you could get the number to a door or the pin to a credit card, which falls onto the gameplay side of things.

It all just comes down to personal preference, if you prefer a game with a focused story and excellent RPG gameplay, play Deus Ex.

If you prefer a game that has a far less focused story but makes up for it with many smaller, interesting stories. That also has enough of these stories to last you for weeks, play Skyrim.

If you prefer an actiony shooter with pretty graphics, get Human Revolution.

Axeldeath:

Not all data cubes/emails/notes/books where there just to give you PIN codes and door codes, some of them provided information to make you rethink what approach you should take and who you should trust and what was the conspiracy all about, all under the benefit of doubt.

I know Human Revolutions does not live up to the first one, but i honestly dont think games from nowadays can be compared to any games from the older days, but dont recognizing Human Revolutions still have some good RPG elements and say its just "an actiony shooter with pretty graphics" just make me think you truly didnt give a fair chance to the game.

And yet you try to compare Skyrim with the original Deus Ex, what i think will only create an endless argument because its extremely hard to tell how much each one was important for their own time.

My point is, i think Skyrim needed a main story that could stand as high as the amazing environment it have.

Or they could had removed the main story entirely.

But as you said, it is a matter of personal opinion, so lets leave it at that.

I'm not saying HR wasn't an amazing game with great story and nice level design, but the only thing it has over the original Deus Ex was it's graphics and it's shooting (for those that prefer skill-based shooting). Don't get me wrong, Human Revolution is a great game but it's nigh impossible to live up to the original seeing as it's one of the greatest PC games of all time.

Seeing what they've done with HR gives me very high hopes for Thief 4 (or THI4F as they like to call it >_>)
