Sometimes when I launch a game, Steam appears to lock up. It usually coincides with an update being released, and it locks up temporarily whilst it starts to download stuff, and eventually unfreezes (not necessarily because the download has finished). It's annoying but all I need to do is wait. How long have you left it frozen for? Or do you lose patience and kill it within something like 20 seconds? It might be worth waiting and seeing what happens.

Feel free to PM me about almost anything and I'll do my best to answer. :)

the first few times it froze i waited around 10 minutes to see if it fixed... but it didnt, so i killed it. then i kept killing it whenever it freezes like that. its also happening with windows' pop-ups, like error messages, that thing that pops up when you delete stuff or move/copy it and things like that. on steam, it happens with chats, game launchers, update messages, me trying to exit steam or when a game crashes. also, since this is happening, i cant open the server list on any source game. i click find servers but nothing happens. just makes that sound.

please, guys, if anyone knows how to solve this, please gimme a hand!

yea. folders also freeze when i change the name of things or sometimes when i right click them. the only way out is killing with task manager. i left it 10 mins to see what happened, but did not unfreeze... so... ctrl-shift-esc and good bye. in fact, the whole bloody windows explorer is working like sh*t.

This issue sounds like it's not just Steam then, something else might be the cause of your problems. What are your system specifications and operating system? It may also help to provide information on what programs you usually have running in the background (anti-virus, etc).

Your system is unstable.

Downgrade to XP is my recommendation until you get 4GB RAM. Once you do, get Windows 7, never use Vista.

If you're running Vista just for DX10, just get the DX10RC for XP... It isn't perfect, but it lets you do a lot of DX10 stuff on XP.

Don't insult me. I have trained professionals to do that.

I had no issues with Windows Vista, although I did have 4GB ram.

And the 4GB mark is where you stop having issues with Vista. Everything below that causes tons of instability, and nobody but Microsoft really knows why.
