The Accursed Forums List of Approved Free Games

Recommended Posts

Free games. You can never complain about them being horrible, because you didn't pay for them. But there are some that are just exceptional, given that they come with no monetary cost. So what are the free video games that the Accursed Farms community approves? Place your recommendations in this topic, and I'll be sure to add them to the main post.

Here are some simple rules, to keep the list accessible, clean and easy to understand:

  1. Any kind of license is allowed, as long as the complete game is FREE;
  2. No demos, trial versions, or games where you have to pay to have access to new functions (like many MMORPGs do);
  3. Only share games that you enjoyed. Because it's a list of games that you approve;
  4. Include a link. This could link to the oficial webpage, or the download page itself;
  5. Give a description or your opinion of the game. No need for anything too fancy, maybe just the genre and a few other words if you want. You can add any additional information you want.

Note: you don't have to format it exactly as I did, I'll take care of that.

THE LIST

Cave Story / Doukutsu Monogatari

  • Awesome little side-scroller platformer. Great story, nice 8-bit visuals, really good music, and an excellent gameplay.

GLTron (Alyxx)

  • Game based on the light cycle portion of the movie Tron.

America's Army (JournaL)

  • Fun, realistic, free, basically a poor man's Multiplayer FPS game.

F.E.A.R. Combat (JournaL)

  • Another poor man's Multiplayer FPS game.

Command & Conquer (JournaL)

  • Classic strategy game.

Rockstar Classics (Alyxx)

  • Grand Theft Auto 1 and 2 and Wild Metal.

Bio Menace (Alyxx)

  • Uses the Commander Keen 4 engine and plays a lot like the early Duke Nukem games.

Anyone who knows how to type can use Google and find lists like that. I wanted a list that would reflect the tastes of the Accursed Farms community. You didn't follow my rules, but I'll add the game anyway.

Just what type of taste are you guys talking about? Pretty much anybody who registers?

Not just any free game under your rules? Like Farcry with McDonald's ads don't count? Haha If anyone remembers that...

Anerica's Army~(there is 2, and 3; made by the U.S. Army, American tax dollars at work): http://www.americasarmy.com/

Fun, realistic, free, basically a poor man's Multiplayer FPS game.

F.E.A.R. Combat: http://projectorigin.warnerbros.com/fearcombat/main

Another poor man's Multiplayer FPS game.

Command & Conquer (EA let it go free a few years back): http://uk.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/commandconquerthefirstdecade/download_6178099.html

Classic strategy game.

New games added, thanks for the contribution. I was hoping for a little bit more activity in the topic. Maybe its harder in a forum where people are used to the quality standards of the Half-Life series

Also, I think adware games are fine, unless you guys disagree and thing thats a form of payment.

Me too. As long as you don't have to pay for any of it, it should be counted as freeware.

How bout Abandonware?

Abandonware: a term used to describe computer software that is no longer sold or supported, or whose copyright ownership may be unclear for various reasons. A software product, especially a video game, whose copyright is no longer defended or which is no longer marketed even by the company who made it.

Don't insult me. I have trained professionals to do that.

Abandonware games are not freeware since they are still retail games even if support for them no longer exists or the original developer has gone out of existence. They were retail games when they came out and are still retail games per definition.

The fact that they are no longer owned by anyone makes no difference then?

Don't insult me. I have trained professionals to do that.

The legality of abandonware is debatable. But if you're okay with it, then I guess we can share abandonware. It's just that I've seen the DOS version of BlackThorne on abandonware sites and that game is owned by Blizzard.

Most abandonware sites list all old unsupported games, but do not allow downloading of still owned games.

I consider abandonware to be something that is unsupported by any company, (community support is not a company) and who's licence/copyright is unowned by anyone.

Don't insult me. I have trained professionals to do that.

A freebie I really recommend is the game Bio Menace by Apogee. It has been free for a long time now. It uses the Commander Keen 4 engine and plays a lot like the early Duke Nukem games.

You need DOSBox to play it, of course.
