ROSS’S GAME DUNGEON: KILLING TIME

Halloween Game Dungeon! This was supposed to come out 1-2 days ago, but it’s before Halloween, so it’s still less under the wire than normally. This game was definitely an experience, not what I expected.

This is another one of those games where I'm hoping someone is able to extract and dump the soundtrack; those "completely inappropriate" tracks sound like they'd make perfect additions to any video game YouTuber's library of "obscure game tracks to use as background music during B-roll because they won't get the video blocked".

I'm in no way an expert, but I got the impression that those were well-known titles most of which are probably copyrighted...

Eh, doubt they'd get claimed, I don't think stock music was as much of a thing back then--at most, you had stock samples, and even for something like Lemmings that had royalty-free music, the composer still had to actually arrange the in-game "instrumentation."

None of them sounded familiar to me; what did you recognize?

I'm not sure if Ross has played a lot of Build engine shooters like Duke Nukem 3D and Blood, but those are examples of '90s shooters (or retro '90s shooters made recently in the case of Ion Fury) that have more detailed and "realistic" environments than the likes of Doom. CULTIC is also a retro shooter with pretty realistic environments.

I'm pretty sure his point was that the levels had more presence than usual for a shooter in August of 95. Duke 3D is known for being a pioneer in designing levels to actually resemble locations, and that came later.

Fair enough. I guess that's on me for thinking he meant '90s shooters in general when he mentioned "Doom era" shooters.
