My theory, since both Adrian Shepherd and Barney Calhoun can breathe on Xen just fine without a helmet, is that the atmosphere on Xen is breathable by humans, and this would also explain why the aliens can invade earth the same way without need for any suits.

 

Most likely the team was sent in with helmets to protect their heads, not to breathe. Or just for simple security measures.

I gotta say it Alyxx, Adrian Shepherd wears a face mask. he's exempt from that. your point is valid still.

and also Xen creatures can breathe on earth just fine. (assuming they have a system that requires an intake/outtake of air to function.)
