At my house: 12 Mbps down/0.90 Mbps up

Any more download speed would just make it far too easy to bump into the 60 GB monthly quota. I would however greatly appreciate faster upload speed, ~110 KB/s is borderline enough to have a bugfree voice/video conversation over Skype/WLM/whatever.

No prob. Just few days ago I learned about that project in the topmost thread. I might check it out if I bother redownloading SS1.

A 2D sidescrolling JJ3 would float my boat into the skies. 2D platformers can look absolutely gorgeous visually from the art alone, JJ2 is an example of that in my opinion, now imagine if such art had a modern graphics engine at its service. *eyegasm*

It has the biggest graphical wow moment for me; stepping out of the Vortex Rikers for the first time. In 1998 the only other FPS games I had played were Quake 2 and Hexen 2.

And what makes Unreal truly special in my heart is the atmosphere. Its level design and variety in setting makes me feel like I'm there. I can almost feel the breeze of the wind on Na Pali when I walk outside, for example, and I can almost feel the cold night after exiting the ISV Kran and travelling to the massive Sunspire complex in the nearby mountain.

Which brings me to the next point, the scales! The game is so over the top in this regard. A massive mountain with an elevator system inside, below a frightening fall into an ocean of lava, and you will travel up into the skies with some weird sci-fi meets ancient architecture elevator.

Where did Epic's creativity and passion go? It's sad.

I want to mention the music too. Deus Ex, Jazz Jackrabbit 2, Unreal and Unreal Tournament all contain the works of the same musical artist(s). Brilliant works. Such unique sound effects and atmosphere that will not and can not be recreated. I only think that the sound quality could be improved a bit without damaging the nostalgia.

So do I, but it was not a good seller, JJ3(D) got cancelled after all.

My single favourite game ever?

Either Unreal or System Shock 2, can't decide. . .

The whole alien concept Valve created for the HalfLife universe is pretty terrifying to me. The striders and advisors are the more disturbing creatures imo, the strider sounds like a computer gone nuts.

I hope HL3/Ep3 will answer more questions than create, especially about the G-Man. He started to play much bigger roles in the series after HL2 as far as I can see.

Jazz Jackrabbit 2 is one of the more underrated games of the late 1990s in my opinion.

I'm waiting for someone to write a book about the episode. . . With every little trivia discussed and brainstorming that the sane human mind can just barely think up.

If there will be a feedback system I think it should be integrated into the profile as a separate dialog that looks much like a page in a thread, except there are no signatures or avatars, just feedback and some info about the one who leaves it. Putting a 'Report abuse' button by each feedback could help a lot to fight abuse.

These changes would need a lot of extra programming though. Feedback/visitor messages are not a standard feature like in vBulletin for example.

It is a pain to run on modern systems and has hardcoded, very annoying controls. Yet I did manage to beat it 5 years ago.

You aren't banning a range of IPs, just a specific one, which at most will ban a household. (unless it's a proxy IP, in which case they should be banned anyways)

Banning IP ranges would actually be useful, though. Banning individual IPs doesn't really do anything at all, spambots do not just come from the server of the firm that created them, they can also set up a base on a malware-infected computer. On the forum I administrate we had collected thousands of IPs in the banlist but there was actually a steady increase in spam over the months. Now 2 months have passed since we installed Q&A and there has not been a single spam post/registration since. The first thing we did after this success was clearing our IP banlist and things are still going as well as one could hope for.

The bots that are plaguing this forum are the exact same ones that plagued us on the other forum. They got small avatar and fill their profile with the most unlikely jobs and other info. If the other forum is any indication of the future for this one then we will have to prepare to ban several of these every single day, and that is just the ones that post, the majority of bots we cleaned out after installing Q&A actually never posted but only registered. You could imagine the horror when looking at the member's list. . .

The machines were originally programmed by humans, they build for them, not for themselves. I don't imagine a super-smart AI that sees there are no humans around, just an AI caught in an infinite loop of some sort.

There is no need to ban if we can prevent them from registering, which is exactly what the Q&A plugin is good at.

IP bans can potentially ban legit users as well so we should avoid that at all costs.
