My absolute favorite moment, and line in the whole series is in Episode 14. After remarking about the elevator going down to the first tram car, he sees a houndeye. He says to the houndeye, "Don't look at me." Those four words sum up all that is great, in my opinion, about Freeman's Mind. Followed closely thereafter by his yelling at the houndeyes ("You're a bunch of Mexican jumping beans!" WRT the physics in the game). Beep beep beep beep beep...

Didn't the destruction of Nihilanth cause the portal storms, not the Resonance Cascade? I thought that the Resonance Cascade just opened a doorway from Xen to Earth (and potentially vice versa, if the view from inside the Test Chamber during the Cascade is still valid afterwards--or if the vorts that drop in the Test Chamber don't teleport elsewhere). My vision of the events immediately following the destruction of Nihilanth is that Gordon is put into stasis by the G-Man, the destruction causes shockwaves to spread out over Xen and the Resonance Cascade tear causes the first portal storm spreads over the Earth. This causes a rebound effect as the shockwaves re-enters Xen, or possibly other worlds, causing regular portal storms to cover the Earth. This activity alerts the Combine to our existence. The portal storms, in my mind, cause untold devastation in "the first days" (see beginning of Episode 2) and the Combine are ripe to take over. Seven hours later, the war is over. The Combine crash Citadels into the Earth (they're welcomed because they stop the portal storms--until Gordon destroys it) and now "crime is at its lowest in recorded history. It's a total U-turn." "Remember: your decomposing corpse puts out less greenhouse gases than your hybrid car! ...I think."

Guard: I'm gonna get me one of them jumbo-sized Rutta grape sodas! Gordon: I can't believe you drink that stuff. Did you ever read the side of the can? There's nothing in it that could possibly be thought of as "grape". Or even "grape flavoring". It's probably something Black Mesa cooked up that had the unexpected side-effect of tasting kind of like grape, but has the side-effect of making all your hair fall out by the time you're 40 or growing an extra limb out of your chest. Guard: Mm-mm! Whatta Rutta!

Doesn't really matter as Freeman's criminal record (had he one) would've been irrelevant as soon as he destroyed Nihilanth and was thrown in stasis for 20 years. The Combine takeover of Earth would've made it irrelevant. And I think any actions that Freeman has taken in Half-Life 2 (and its episodes) and the eventual Half-Life 3 would more than make up for the handful of deaths (comparitively speaking) that Freeman inflicted upon the HECU and Science Team/guard staff.

Brother purchased computer parts all in individual pieces (motherboard, RAM, case, etc) and, since I'm "good with computers", I was wangled into putting it all together for him. For free. Runs like a dream, though and I'm jealous of what he purchased.

Interestingly enough, I've had people tell me I look like Jack Black. I'm not 100% sure that's a compliment or not. (Same song.)

In the games themselves, I feel like they're leaning on the fourth wall sometimes. At least the vortigaunts do. I feel they seem to know about our Earth and that they're something like slaves to the Valve Software company but they don't know what to make of it. ("We serve the same mystery." "Far distant eyes look out through yours.") That's why I love the Half-Life games.
