They're not technically "friendly" in the first game. Friendlies (such as scientists and guards) will ally with you if you talk to them. These vorts more neutral than enemies. They will still attack you if you fight them, but they will not ally with you.

Ross has stated in the past that, if there's demand for it, he would continue Freeman's Mind into HL2 and its episodes. Maybe by the time he finishes with Episode 2, Valve will finally have released HL2:Ep3 and HL3.

Sounds fine to me but I'm not an audiophile. Great episode, though! I love how you addressed the ammo situation, too. Made the situation feel a bit more real. Wonder if Freeman will start to notice that the HECU have cleared out (you won't see any more in the game--alive, anyway).
