  1. ...Every religion is a reflection of some group of people's desires. a lot of it is based on money, sometimes actual moral outrage, sometimes guys just wanted to get their wiener touched by a lot of women, or they smoked too much opium or did too many mushrooms or drank a lot and were also loud mouths so they made their fantasies a faith. They get money, they get justification to take over the people and their lives, we then get rulers and peasants since someone has to be deliver the word of god and someone has to kneel. That's how things have worked for a very, very long time. God is the #1 cause of death and the most common reason humans have used for warring, so I see no reason to give praise to it.

Firstly I'd like to say that out of the two points you made there, the second point is a fully credible criticism that if stated must be applied to every participant argument because "Travesties and grotesquely inhumane acts in the name of [insert thing here]" are not exclusive to any religion or irreligion.

You say Crusades, I say Holocaust. You say the Witch Hunts, I say the Khmer Rouge rule of Cambodia. It doesn't really do anything apart from mudslinging based upon the collective histories of extremists or those that famously misinterpreted their doctrines. (Blame and cause are contextual, so lets not get into those details.)

But the first point you made is either based on or strongly reflective of one of Neitszche's criticism that Religion exists simply as a method of accruing power and prestige over others. I can't remember the exact name for it, but one of the philosphies championed by Nietzsche was the idea that in a sense, "All truth claims could not be trusted." One would say "Everyone should believe in social justice" for example, and Nietzsche would squint his eyes and say "Hm. Do you honestly believe in the good of Social Justice and that everyone aught to practice it, or are you simply wanting to start a revolution with yourself as the Leader?". So obviously such an approach to Religion would result in his immediate distrust of all aspects of it, in a manner of speaking.

This criticism is also very credible, which pointed out on a major problem and possibly endemic fault that could then be detected and corrected, once Nietzsche had given it a name (which again, I forget).

Within Christianity, the use of spreading the Gospel for gain of anything but the Kingdom of God (anything that is not the Kingdom of God includes Church organizations, Denominations, Companies or Individuals) is termed spreading the Gospel "For your own Glory". It can be a very problematic foible since pride in success can blind oneself to their lack of humbleness, and who they are serving. Christianity is to be serving Jesus, not the individual.

But Nietzsche's truth claim in of itself is also self-canceling, since "All truth claims can not be trusted." is also a truth claim, which therefore can't be trusted. Unless one notices that, it's a perfect little pin for popping everyone else's balloon.

  2. your dad sounds like a very intelligent man by the way.

He was Data Processing in the Navy. Most of the computer programs that he wrote for the Supply guys became national standards.

  3.

Game of the Fucking Year, folks.

    That made me LOL...

Speaking of animation, I just posted the first part of my animated short film.

Not bad... The movement of the guy is a bit stiff, and the music a tad loud... (not bad = quite good)

  4. Yeah, school systems are dumb. That's why I'm homeschooling the rest of high school.

home-schooling's the easy way out. trust me, school is better, no matter what the system is.

I was homeschooled... It isn't easy. I had to teach myself Algebra 2, Trig, Geometry, and Physics.

it wasn't called "gifted" in my school, and we weren't stupid, just a bit of difficulty with retaining mathematical information (in my case at least).

Same, but it's not really the retaining the info that's the problem... It's that the curriculum teaches you to beat the standardized tests, and never teaches you the actual workings of the math. Your mind rebels and says it won't continue to process like that until the process is explained to it... In the end it looks like you're retarded when it comes to math, so the school tries to lump you in with those that really are in need of that 'special' help.

Did "Gifted" mean "class for the stupid kids" for you guys? I was put in actual "Gifted" student classes because of high test scores. It was for advanced material the rest of the class wasn't doing.

I used to get 90% or better on all the standardized tests, but fail everything else because the curriculum sucked. (I was learning the real info at home when I asked my parents about what I was learning in school; 10 minutes with my Dad taught me more about math than 72 hours of class at school)

  5. Quake II has the worst first person shooter console controls ever, no contest.

What? Are you saying that the controls for the port to the console sucks? Well, they probly do since they wouldn't have any auto-aim functions.

Any good Console FPS has autoaim, with Quake 2 it only slightly does. But it's a problem when the game is easier to play without the dual shock controller.

Well, considering that it's original controls didn't include the mouse...

  6. when you beat the game you start over with all your augmentations intact right? that's something i liked about resident evil 4 & 5.

No. You get to start over and make entirely new choices, augments included.

If you don't like that, I have a trainer that you can use to put in enough praxis points to get your previous augs.

Last game: Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Doing some little things to mess with my inventory... I now have the tranq rifle with 4 of each generic upgrades, and the target leading upgrade.

I also have the stun gun with 4 of each generic upgrade... 41 shots per clip, and full semi-auto fire rate... It is the best short range weapon now...

  7. My earliest gaming memory was spyro.
(mine's Duke Nukem 1 on PC).
My earliest gaming memory was a Rally game on my father's PC.
My earliest game memory was either Jazz Jackrabbit, Crystal Caves or Tyrain.

    All these youngsters...

Is there anyone here that remembers the old Apple II's? Hitchhicker's Guide to the Galaxy text-based adventure game FTW!!!

  8. And how exactly is that a bad thing?

Thats a bad thing because some people LIKE communism. So just because the US are afraid of it, they're gonna invade the country ? From what has happened the last 60 years thats a clear yes.

So what? Communism means making the masses into slaves. It doesn't matter if there are a few nutjobs who like that; if some people don't want to be slaves, you have no right to force them.

    Communism is an excellent system

Are we talking about the same system? Communism is the system of altruism--the system that says that man has no right to exist for his own sake.

Putting a gun to an individual's head and dictating the terms of their life, their work and their effort is immoral in every sense. There is no situation where this can be a good system.

You're doing the same thing with communism that you're doing in the discussion about anarchy... Taking worst-case scenarios and twisting them to be it's main precepts.

Communism is not a bad system, just impossible for our current world to utilize correctly. You want to know what a communist system really looks like when properly implemented, go watch Star Trek: The Next Generation... The United Federation of Planets is actually a communist government.
