  1. I've always been bothered by how some people refer to the "balance of nature" as evidence for life being created by some "higher power". Where exactly is this balance? Nature is entirely dependent on things constantly killing each other, and is incredibly wasteful. Just think that the vast majority of species that have ever existed are now extinct, just think of all the suffering that is inherent in this "balance of nature".

[sarcasm] I never knew balance = lack of suffering... [/sarcasm]

Will people quit putting the wrong definition to words, it's getting boring.

What waste is there? Everything goes right back into the cycle eventually...

There is nothing to suggest that earth was somehow made with us in mind, even if we were to ignore the overwhelming evidence we have for how earth was formed.

So how was the Earth formed? (no theories, facts only please... like videos of the Earth forming, or a time machine that will take us back to watch it happen, or something that PROVES it without extensive conjecture)

For example, most of earth is completely inhospitable to humans (too hot/cold etc.). Consider earthquakes, storms, volcanoes, tsunamis, floods and not to mention asteroid impacts and other disasters.

So what? Ever thought that maybe they were made inhospitable specifically to make us grow to be able to fill them?

Also consider that for the vast majority of human history most of our species didn't live past 40 or so. Our sun is also expending it's fuel and will eventually swell up and completely "devour" our little planet, isn't that some rather questionable "design"?

And where is your proof of that? Last I heard all that was just theoretical since nobody has ever witnessed our sun expanding and devouring our planet, or recovered large caches of records chronicling the ages of the world's population for any lengthy duration.

As to the "miraculous" nature of life I'm afraid I don't see that either. Even if life is extremely unlikely it would have had to happen countless times already just on account of the size and age of the universe. There's also no reason to assume that life is uncommon considering that we're made of some of the most common elements in the universe (hydrogen, oxygen and carbon mostly).

The material doesn't have any affect on the commonality of the object... Carbon is the most common element, yet jewelry quality diamonds are rare... I want to say something about not seeing any skyscrapers building themselves, but that analogy seems to be a bit too complex for most people to understand.

We haven't yet found any life on other planets but considering we only have real knowledge of about 8 planets out of several billion that isn't saying much.

What "several billion" are you talking about? We have no evidence supporting that assumption anywhere, just a theory. (I personally agree, but it's still just a theory without proof)

Oh, and we have discovered a few other planets outside of our solar system. They are thought to be gas giants though, and therefore "unimportant". I wonder what'll happen if they find one that has Earth-like conditions...

The fact that our existence, to ourselves, seems unlikely and "special" is irrelevant.

True, but the same is true for the assumption that we aren't "special". It doesn't matter in the grand scheme, so why try to deny people the ability to choose without bias?

Just because you think that the Evolution Theory is more scientific, it doesn't mean it has actual proof, or that it is a fact. Never treat a theory as fact. (EG String Theory, Chaos Theory, Control Theory, etc.)

  2. This week I have

Gefore 9800 GTX+, AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+ 2.21 GHz and 2 gigs DDR2. Free with nice case, i love it when my friends have old stuff and feel sorry for me!

At least it ain't that crap Mac...

Indeed i plan to upgrade eventually

How soon is this "eventually" you speak of?

  3. After all, games are entertainment, and games that are hard to play are not entertaining.

That entirely depends on the game, and what your definition of "simple" is... I have a hard time playing some simple games all the way to the end simply because they're too simple.

Pac-Man simple is entirely different from Pong simple, and CoD simple is way simpler than 1+1=2 simple... It's all where the "simple" is in the game.

  4. Playing Golden Axe 1 & 2...

    Going retro are we?

    Always...

Heck, I still do speedruns of the original Sonic on a regular basis. (I'm in an ongoing speed competition with a friend, I always seem to beat his speed by a few seconds though)

  5. Just decided to install all 22 of the DLC packs to see if it helps make run #2 of ME2 more enjoyable... It definitely does.

I thoroughly recommend piracy of the DLC for this game. (they aren't even remotely worth the price they charge for them)

  6. screw the cinematic mod, it makes Alyx look like a slutty whore, no offence. i bet the maker of the cinematic mod was a pervert :/

He's German, and the High-Def model is based off his favorite actress... (who definitely looks like a slutty whore, and generally plays a slutty whore character) He hasn't made an Alyx model for a very long time, and is waiting until EP3/HL3 is released to make a new one.

Some of the other HD models (Kleiner, Eli, G-Man) that are supposed to be HD upgrades of the HL2 models I find don't look like I envisioned their HD versions of being... (He's supposedly hoping Valve has HD models in HL3/EP3 so he doesn't have to make new ones himself)

  7. The military is already looking into doing it to power soldiers in the field where it's hard to get other fuels. I figure we could probably kick-start the same sort of program to provide energy for the public with... oh, about what it cost to build the fleet of stealth bombers, in today's dollars. At least, that was the estimate I read a few years ago.

Too bad they're still stuck messing with solar power for soldiers when they should be trying to make bio-energy extraction techniques (using the human body as a generator) usable, or just adding a series of kinetic watch style generators (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_quartz) at the soldiers elbows/knees/other joints.

  8. How come I played all the way through HL1 and heard no music? I was under the impression that it didn't have a soundtrack...

Turn up the music volume setting in the sound options. (if it's HL:S you don't need the disc to get the music)

  9. EDIT: this is an open question: what do you do with power comsumption with a machine like that? Should be around 600 or 700 W. That's a lot for, let's say, having it on all night serving CP and FM.

That wattage rating is the absolute maximum power draw. If you're just having it idle with a blank screen, and seeding a torrent, it'll likely be around 125-200 watts. (laptops usually 50-100 watts if you're using a good laptop cooler)

As far as Chilean computer sites go, that is probly one of the better put together ones, but it still doesn't have anything decent... I would highly suggest getting from Newegg and paying a little extra for shipping if it isn't too much. (better selection, likely much better service, almost the same prices)

  10. I think that's the main reason people are blaming Sony for the attack. But I think all systems, no matter how safe, all have a hole to exploit. It's just a matter of finding it.

Holes are defended by having an actual person monitor the system. If Sony didn't bother, they deserve the blame. (if they did have someone to watch the system, then they deserve even more blame)
