  1. Duke Nukem is looking better than I thought it would. DX:HR has looked awesome from the very beginning.

     

    For holding you over, definitely BFBC2... Preferably with the Vietnam expansion, since it's like adding on Battlefield: Vietnam onto the BFBC2 game engine. It kept me busy for almost a month, and I have ADHD...

    The situation in my country - if you're a big fan of Crysis/CoD or similar "popular blockbuster" games, basically, you're a 14-years emptyheaded child who does not concerned about anything but the "grafik and ection". For them, games released before 2005 is an old crap. The thing is - I don't remember when last time I saw a Crysis fan who can play in an old (< 2005) game. And they're the future of our "great-human-beings" species. So, I'm glad to know you're not one of them.

    I'm a fan of Crysis, am 23 years old, and I have gone to great pains to make DOS games work as they were designed to on my Win7 x64 laptop.

     

    Now you've met one.

     

    CoD MW2/Blops on the other hand IS a mentally 12-14 year old only game...

  3. Well that's a lot of games to cover, I'll look over all screenshots / benchmarks you're willing to send however. I'll be surprised if Dead Space 2 in particular works, the original one was notorious for not working with ANY AA modes. The ONLY method that works on that at this time is ATI's MLAA mode, which is a post-processing technique rather than "real" AA (still better than nothing though).

    I'll have to see, I never use AA on the newer games because it seems to drop my framerate to somewhere between 5 and 15 FPS...

     

    As for box, wide tent, etc. I THINK by enabling SSAA, that will override all those modes, so it won't matter. The trick is to find games or areas in games where "normal" AA modes like the ones you mentioned still don't smooth all the jagged edges due to shaders or whatever. For instance, HL2 isn't a great game for that, since regular AA modes clean up so much of the image as it is. Anything based on Unreal 3 is particularly good for finding shader aliasing however. I'd say run your settings at 4x for comparison (I never notice huge differences beyond 4x), pick a filtering mode you want, maybe put anisotropic filtering to 16x.

    I'll use 16x Anisotropic, but the different filtering does still make a big difference with SSAA. I'll give you what I got from the Catalyst Control Center help file...

    • Box or Standard—Uses only samples from within the current pixel. All samples are equally weighted. (Produces the sharpest look; fastest performance.)
    • Narrow-tent—Uses samples from the current pixel and the surrounding area. Samples are weighted based on their distance from the pixel center. (Produces a softer look; slightly slower performance.)
    • Wide-tent—Uses samples from the current pixel and the surrounding area. Samples chosen by the wide-tent filter include areas a little bit further away from the current pixel than samples used by the narrow filter, but not from areas further away than 1.25 times the current pixel radius. Samples are weighted based on their distance from the pixel center. (Produces a softer look; slightly slower performance.)
    • Edge-detect—Uses samples from the current pixel and the surrounding area. Samples chosen by the edge detect filter are weighted to produce better anti-aliasing along edges without causing any softening or blurring of the scene. (Slightly slower performance.)

     

    Finally, my guess is SSAA performance is equally punitive on both cards, but the big question I've never had answered is how big a difference the amount of video memory makes. Take the 2GB Geforce 460 for example. In 99% of applications that most people run, the extra 1GB of memory makes NO difference in performance. But for something like supersampling, it MIGHT, I don't know; I've never seen a comparison or know just how much video memory a card can really use for SSAA. The very nature of supersampling suggests that it could use a LOT of memory. Also for some games apparently the SSAA image quality on Nvidia cards can be blurrier, but I've barely seen ANY information on the topic to make an informed opinion on it.

    I'm again going to quote from the help file...

     

    MSAA renders 3D objects by rendering multiple samples at various programmable locations within each edge pixel and blending the sample values together using gamma-correction, smoothing the appearance of polygon edges. SSAA works similarly, but renders multiple samples for every pixel on the screen, unlike MSAA which only renders multiple samples at polygon edges. By rendering multiple samples for every pixel, super-sampling gives a higher quality image than multi-sampling, reducing shimmering in textures and shading as well as at polygon edges. Adaptive anti-aliasing uses a combination of both methods: SSAA to render some surfaces that have transparent elements and MSAA for all other surface rendering.

     

    Super-sampling can be much slower than multi-sampling because it effectively renders the whole scene at a much higher resolution than the display. A 2560×1600 image with 4× super-sampling takes about the same amount of time to render a 5120×3200 image without super-sampling.

    Adaptive MSAA is essentially SSAA on transparent areas, and MSAA for everything else...

     

    Ok, so the short of that last bit is: Whatever the multiple is (2x, 4x, 8x, 16x, etc.) is multiplied to the resolution of the textures/scene and then down converted. (MSAA is only for 3d objects)

     

     

    The MSAA/SSAA setting says what gets the rez boost, the filtering tells how many pixels to sample, and from where.

  5. I am running Windows 7 x64, and IE9 installed fast and without a hitch (no keyboard/mouse freezing or anything like that). Could it be that your PC has some sort of malware that is manipulating programs in the background and hindering the installation of IE9? It might explain the strange performance drain and lack of errors

    And the request to close explorer.exe.

  7. Needing two 3rd party clients to run a game is ridiculous. My comfort zone is no client at all and games that are tidy (don't make a mess outside their own root folder, like in the Users areaI. I am willing to deal with either GfWL or Steam. If the only way to play Quake 5: Return to the Netherworld, System Shock 3 or Jazz Jackrabbit 2D 3 was to use both of these clients on top of one another I wouldn't spend a penny on them, I refuse to vote this shit over myself with my own wallet. One would think that in the times of runtimes, APIs and frameworks it would make development and playing of PC games easier, but no, thanks to clients and DRM it is more of a pain in the ass than ever before.

    Indeed... That's why I usually run games with a cracked exe, even when I get them legally. (exceptions being anything on Steam, some multiplayer games, and anything that doesn't have DRM)

    You have a mic hooked up to your computer? That and the pre-Vista sound recorder that came with windows (ever since Win 3.1) are all you need to become a recording studio.

     

    If you need the program, I can e-mail it to you... It's less than 500kb.

  9. I have Win7 x64...

     

    It gave me trouble until I uninstalled most of the Dell shitware they load up on all their systems. Even had to remove the shitty McAfee AV they preloaded on it. (it kept blocking the install since it affects some vital OS files)

     

    Turning off UAC helped immensely too.

     

    My total install time was <5 min.

  10. And the Star Trek category should be split into Star Trek Even numbered films and remake and Star Trek Odd numbered films sans remake. Those who chose odds should face the same consequences as Star Wars 1,2,3.

    How about I just spilt it into the original 6 with the newest (minus the very first movie), the TNG based movies, and the very first movie combined with 2001: ASO?

     

    Seems like a much better split than your proposal to me...

     

    Star Wars Episodes 1-3 weren't originally intended to ever be made. The 4-6 episode numbers were there simply to imply that there were some major things that happened first, and we were hopping in in the middle of a story. (and the fanbase is split on whether the prequels should ever have been made, hence the split votes)

    First review, by request...

    Prince of Persia

     

    Ok... To start, it's by Disney. Essentially an non-kids version of Disney's Aladdin, only with a dagger instead of a lamp & genie.

     

    Good acting, decent story, great CGI effects... Overall moderately boring. Lots of cliché moments, but lots of action too. Doesn't require a lot of thought...

     

    Since I have never played the game, I'm looking at this as a movie only, and am not biased by any pros/cons that I see many using when relating it to the games.

     

    Some of the free run sequences look like they came straight out of Assassin's Creed...

     

    I would recommend seeing it at least once, but I personally see it as a "watch once every decade at the most often" kind of movie.
