  1. Wouldn't it be smarter to actually set point B before leaving point A?

Not when leaving point A is of higher priority than setting point B.

    What's your point?

Besides... It's always greener at point C.

  2. But I think piracy nowadays is slowly dwindling down, with all of the games' measures to prevent such things. I predict that 5 years from now, almost all games will be digitally distributed, thus making software piracy a challenge.

This made me lol so much... Piracy of games/movies has actually been on the steady rise due to the US's failing economy, and digital distribution is no harder to pirate than a normal hard copy...

Now on to the topic at hand. Most of what I torrent I either owned in the past, or can't find anywhere else... (eg. Cyberstorm 2, Earthsiege)

The rest I test to see if they're worth buying. These are the ones I will otherwise never purchase, and therefor is no loss to the company. Torrenting a copy of AC2 is the only reason I bought it, the original AC, and pre-ordered ACB.

The same goes for movies. I torrent movies as though I was checking them out from the library, and plan on buying most of the ones I didn't already own. (Tron Legacy is not one I'll buy)

Music is usually hard to find outside of torrents, (at least for what I listen to) and there are even some artists that have albums released only through a free torrent. (eg. Steal This Album by System Of A Down) Many are realizing that piracy is inevitable, but not necessarily a bad thing.

I'm open to any criticism, questions, and will clarify on any point if you like.

  3. Except if he doesn't like it... He's stealing money from the company. I'd prefer to read some reviews and watch some videos before possibly wasting money on a game as opposed to stealing money from the developers and essentialy the employees that worked their ass's off to make this game.

How is it stealing their money if I absolutely won't buy the game if I don't get a chance to play and see? If it's good in the torrent, I buy. If not, they haven't lost a damn thing.

Let's not get too sidetracked. I can make a separate discussion regarding piracy.

Do it. I have lots of good arguments supporting.

  4. If heavily nested quotes are a problem, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a way to limit the number of quotes that can be nested. Same with large forum posts, I wouldn't be surprised if some sort of character limit can be implemented.

There already is a triple nested limit... (quote within a quote within a quote)

Character limit is probably unnecessary though.

  5. Aside from a few problematic situations where the encoder falls flat, the psychoaccoustics fool the casual listener perfectly, including my healthy, non-trained pair of ears. I don't use mp3 files but occasionally I encode one of my lossless files for fun with LAME 3.98.2 and I have yet to hear any difference with a side-by-side comparison. Our frequency response is not very wide and even less so when we only take the most sensitive ranges into account, a lot of data can be thrown out without anyone but the most trained ears noticing. This opens up a lot of options for fooling people, and I really feel sorry for those who buy all the snake oil circulating in the audio market.

It depends on the music and the speakers/headphones you use as to whether it is even possible for the frequencies to be produced. (as I already mentioned) So what song did you use, and what speakers/headphones do you use?

But that wasn't really the main part of my post, let's try to focus on the avatar images, I did ask you a specific question.

To me it is extremely visible. It will vary with different monitors and different eyes, but it physically strains my eyes when I know what the image is supposed to look like, and it doesn't look that way when I see it.

  6. Forgive me if this point has already been covered:

Creationism is not, and never can be, science. Creationism is not, and can never be, a Theory. Creationism does not even qualigy as a hypothesis. All these things require the evaluation of observable phenomena. Creationism, postulating as it does the existence of a Creator which CANNOT be observed, measured, or studied in any way, cannot possess this quality.

Therefore it should in no way be taught in a class dealing with science. It is better left in a class about comparative religion, where it can be compared and contrasted with the belief that Raven crapped out the Earth (Native American), or that Gods dredged up the land from beneath the sea, (Maori) that a great Cow licked the first man out of the ice (Norse) or that the Great Green Arklesiezure sneezed out the universe during a bout of hay fever (42), all of which beliefs have equal evidence in support of them, that is: NONE.

Creationism simply states that life on earth was not a result of a random chemical process that eventually mutated into humans, but a result of intelligent design. (someone or something designed us in a specific way)

This idea is arrived at through basic statistical logic. (a class you can probly take in college if you ever get there) in that it is so extremely unlikely for that particular chemical reaction to occur that the likeliehood of some external intelligence becomes more likely.. (they just don't bother to theorize how specifically it was done, since there is no way to find that through logic currently)

It is just as valid a theory as evolution, because it is based on science as much or more so than evolution. Simply different logical paths taken, neither less valid than the other, neither proven enough that they should be taught in schools as facts. (this is about what is taught in schools, not what you personally believe... I hope the mods will start helping me get this back on the topic it's supposed to be)

  7. I tend to agree with Heinlein that the "best" form of government is actually a Benevolent Tyranny.

The problem lies mostly in finding a benevolent tyrant. I would tend to nominate myself. I don't know anybody better.

I believe I mentioned something similar earlier as being my preference too... We could co-rule and keep each other in check.

I don't believe that you can successfully ban the initiation of force, because people are jerks.

    Yup.

And really, that's the problem with ALL these idealistic societies. They work GREAT, so long as everybody follows the rules.

But hello, Humans. When has this ever happened in our long history? I don't see that changing any time soon. Get back to me once we've all become programmable droids.

I'll get to work on those self-programing nanites shall I?

  8. Well a couple of friends of mine have had bad experiences with shitty PSUs tha say ''700w'' but are not even capable of giving a stable 400w and end burning up their systems... I feel more confident with an Antec or Corsair than a generic PSU...

Yes, but there are several versions of name brand PSUs that suck when compared to their generic counterparts... I used to have a couple of them. (started burning any time you went over 25% of the output rating, and the generics were going to 135% without issues)

  9. I also think it's important to list Atari as an important developer as they made Pong. Need I say more?

Very true... (they also have many more recent games too) But I did more gaming on the Channel F than I did the Atari, so we should also include Fairchild in that developers list too...

  10. who think they can always hear the difference between 320k mp3 files and the CD sources.

Unless you're bass deaf, there is a major difference in the extreme frequency ranges. (you also have to have decent speakers/headphones to produce said frequencies at audible levels)

  11. Some people quote those right above them if they think their post is going to end up on the next page... (I do that) It shouldn't be punished IMO, but everything else seems ok.

Might I recommend that if it's just a really small post, say a 1-4 line post that is quoted, even if it's immediately above the response, that it not be punished either.

Example of a 4 line quote:

    A

    4

    line

    quote.

This is not a 4 line quote:

    A

    7

    line

    quote.

  12. Your limit may be 16.74KB, but mine gave errors when I did a 15KB .jpg...

It is not fair if moderators get a higher limit, I would suggest the admin normalizes it.

But you do not need a higher limit, increase the jpg compression, with such a big file and small dimensions you either have a very complex picture or you are using excessive quality number (92 or higher).

I have CS5, and even a small amount of quality loss is very apparent in the 100x100 rez pics I would use.

  13. I always want to play more games, only problem is that i don't have that much money and parents HATE gaming and don't want to buy games for me. Also i don't have time to game(LOTS of time goes to school, social life and reading this forum lol).

Torrents are your friend. I can PM you a basic guide to safe torrenting if you want...

I know how to torrent, i torrent old games i can't find anywhere to buy and movies. But i like supporting the developers and giving them what they deserve.

Then torrent until you can buy, then buy and remove the torrent... Simple, and gets you gaming sooner...

  14. When you can pay for advantages in a game, the game is no longer about skill. I think level-ups in multiplayer are a flat out terrible idea in the first place, it gives the "pro" players a much unneeded and unfair edge over the newcomers.

Most players get bored of MP if they can't get advantages after working for them. (I'm one of them)
