  1. "Progression" systems in multiplayer games that are snooker-loopy insane. Basically, when there are way, way, WAY too many unlocks that unlock too slowly, and keeps you from playing properly until you grind the fun out of the experience and you can actually do shit. Games like Battlefield 3 seem like the best example of this, but I've only played the beta so I may be wrong with this example. In Battlefield 3, you don't get any useful things in jets like missiles or (I think) missile-confusing flares right off the bat. No, you have to actually grind for God knows how long in a jet, strafing over enemy troops hidden behind all the dust, bloom, and brown trying to shoot them with dumb-fire machine guns. Nothing else as far as I know. All while jets with actual abilities and options are blowing you out of the sky.

That alone would be ridiculous enough for me to condemn systems like this, but then there's the fact that you can almost never get into jets what with people camping their spawns all the time. I would hate those kinds of people as well, but they either:

    A. Also need to try and grind out kills so they can actually be useful in a jet.

    B. Are a person who already has unlocks and would be FAR more useful in a jet than someone who still needs to grind everything out.

And that's just the jet situation. Every other class and vehicle has the same issue where you are worthless with it until you've gotten enough kills to actually get new things and abilities. The Medic class doesn't get his defibrillator (One of the class's main selling points) until he also has ground out a few ranks and dealt with teammates going ""WTF DUde, revive me!" It just blows my mind how far some of these games go with forcing you to grind to get the actual fun unlocked. It's almost like the developers know the game's shit and dangle that constant carrot of unlocks to keep you going.

Duke Nukem Forever's multiplayer has a progression system, sure, but that's just to get novelties in the penthouse or for a new hat to put on Duke. Everything gameplay-wise, weapons and power-ups alike, is contained within the actual levels. Whoever wins the match or a fight is decided based off of pure skill and map knowledge rather than who's been playing the most so as to get all the cool stuff. The unlocks are a status symbol, not a symbol of power.

  2. In that case, Fluttershy better not use the code I gave him. There are plenty of other people who want in the beta that I know, and I want to make sure I don't give them a "bogus" code.

  3. Free Tribes: Ascend Beta key to anyone who wants it. I'll think of a way to decide between you guys soon enough depending on how many are interested.

FIRST COME FIRST SERVE! (plus I did ask about it in the Tribes thread :D)

Fluttershy gets it by virtue of his/her/its avatar. Sorry Kirkreng. Download the Hi-Command client and I'll PM you the beta code.

  4. New update has done two things that have entirely changed my view on Hi-Rez.

    1. Bella Omega was re-added to the map cycle. The changes they have done have made it go from the absolute most horrible map I have ever seen to my hands-down favorite one. For one thing defending the generator has a real purpose, because it keeps some doors shut that cut off some paths to the flag.

    2. Major token price decreases on a few classes, so as to let newer players get Heavy and Light armor classes sooner so they can have variety (And a fighting chance). The Juggernaut is literally Eight. Hundred. Tokens.

Also, they've given beta testers "Beta Keys for Friends."

If any of you maggots want to experience the glory of generator raping with a Fusion Mortar, say aye and I will decide whom gets the free code.

  5. YAY! I don't even know what System Shock is! (I've been out if the PC loop for quite a while. The last GPU I saw from Nvidia was the GTX 560

Well seeing as how that's their most recent GPU...

  6. Regarding the Serious Sam/My Little Pony cross fic, keep these things in mind:

    1. I cannot stand when fanfiction writers take insane liberties with a character's personality. So owning Serious Sam 3 will be a pre-requisite before I really get started (Because I also don't like spoiling all the surprises before I own a game).

    2. I am a slow writer.

    3. I got shit to do and exams next week. My Winter Break starts on the 16th, so expect something to come out between then and January 3rd.

I'll mostly be pre-writing and outlining all the events between tomorrow and whenever I stop being lazy. I'm mostly writing this for the climax itself, which was my vision during my My Little Pony and Serious Sam double-duty. I will say no more than that of it because who likes spoilers, eh?

  7. I just had a vision last night while listening to the Serious Sam 3 theme. A vision that gave me an idea. An idea for a Serious Sam and Friendship is Magic crossover fancfiction that would work within the context of both of them. Though I'll need to play Serious Sam 3 to get an idea of what Sam's personality is really like to see if it works with my idea.

That sounds like it could actually work.

You don't even know what the idea is yet! Fair warning, it's going to be very introspective.

  9. Anyone notice that the only large difference between the Random and General thread is that in the general thread people talk about the current topic for a few posts before switching to something else?

  10. When I was in Elementary School, I always wanted more time off because I didn't care. Nowadays, I kind of want to go to school because it gives me something half-way productive to do.

  11. Also to Applejack, don't understand the air quotes over DLC. Whether you bought it or got it with pre order you still have to download it additionally.

I do not count content that was made during development cycle then cut from the game specifically to get some kind of profit from used game sales as proper DLC. How do I know the Catwoman stuff is exactly this? Because it's built directly into the Steam version due PC games having pretty much no used games market anymore.

    O.T. Tribes: Ascend.

  12. I just had to explain the difference between designing gameplay for bad players and giving newer players a chance against the better ones to an elitist (And I hate this word as much as you do) cunt. His game-name was gabenewell and he was playing heavy-armor classes. Take that as you will.
