  1. I still have things that remind me of how cool it was to not have any responsibilities. XP

Most of my stuff got lost/mislaid in moving my household between various countries but I still occasionally find something and, yes, that does hit me with nostalgia!

  2. In the meantime the Western media is doing what it can to obscure the state of affairs from the public.

Cue the BBC News a couple of days back:

"Al Qaeda has become very active in Yemen so, you see, the Saudis intervened with aerial bombardments"

What they forgot to say, of course, is that the Saudis fight on Al Qaeda's side - they are both Sunnis - and the Saudis were bombing the Shia rebels, supported by Iran.

But, of course, Joe Blow on the streets of Swindon now thinks that the Saudis were actually bombing Al Qaeda...

  3. It shows that nothing is foolproof.

Yes, the unintended consequences. They've forced all airlines to install armoured cockpit doors to protect from terrorists. Now the same door protected a suicidal maniac and let him kill 149 people...

You're not hurting just yourself, but the people around you.

This is what really pisses me off about that guy!

  4. ...I kinda feel that HL2 doesn't really need it. Sure it's over a decade old, but it still looks fine enough to get immersed in.

Which is what concerns me with the now-possible prospect of Episode/Half Life 3. I'd be happy enough if it was as if they'd released it in 2008. Hoping the inevitably-upgraded graphics don't make it feel separate to the previous installments.

This is exactly my sentiment too! To me, if a game looked OK when I first played it, it will look just as well in a 100 years time (if I were there to play it still). The look is a part of the atmosphere of the game and if you change that too much you just make it a different game because it loses the original spirit...

  5. Condolences to your contact :(

Thank you. It was a bit of a shock for him, as could be imagined.

Also it puts things in perspective when something like happen happens so close to home, doesn't it?

I'm gonna do just that the next time we'll talk.

    Good luck! :)

  6. some of us thought that were was just a simple end to the world, and we'd just fall off and die.

I have a suspicion some people still believe that...

and Asians and Mexicans want to cook and eat you!

Oh, now we are into the cannibalism territory here

And, no, I don't want to make any jokes about Scotch eggs! Not me. Never.

  7. Has anyone else here bought something on a whim for pretty much stupid reasons and discovered something really good?

Mostly with music - I almost always buy my CDs without listening to any of it beforehand. Most of the time it turns out so-so but occasionally I discover something beautiful and the surprise is half the pleasure!

how much I like a tea is equal parts flavor and scent. I like to enjoy my tea with both of those senses. :P

    Aha, another tea drinker!

  8. But the sad thing is people see 'no-truth' as wrong. :I

That's because ultimately it's not about abstract truth but is simply a power game. The declared beliefs are only a symbol of allegiance to one group or the other and those who are not with them are against them. But then people who truly believe in something are caught in the middle :-(

  9. A better one would be reading from a text book, and it telling you false information, but you read it and think it as truth because... X3 It's a book.

Oh, yes, that happens all the time! Or, worse - the TV

We are running into the General Election campaign now, in the UK. The amount of lies and disinformation that is coming out of the blue screen is simply amazing.

  10. ...my frustration at trying to court this girl I've fallen in love with...

That probably is the main cause. These things pump you full of hormones that screw up with your mood and there are only two cures - she herself and/or time. If you can, try to convince yourself that the way you feel is just the brain chemistry and it will wear off eventually ...or speak your heart to her. Even if she rejects you - you will feel much better.

  11. I'd say "truth" is how things really are, when observed by someone with full knowledge of everything.

Because no individual can have full knowledge of everything - any practical truth is an approximation with a certain degree of error. We can apply scientific method to try to minimise the error and increase our confidence that something what we think is true really is but we cannot really know the "absolute" truth.

Binky and I could try to very with BTG whether the transmitted message had the intended meaning, if we thought, for example that this was out of BTG's character and so had reasons to suspect an error. Obviously, judging by our conversation - we did not think it was that much out of character... We simply thought BTG has turned into a cereal offender!

There is a different problem when people ignore the evidence if it contradicts their existing opinion. We are all suffering from that to some extent but, surely, there must be a line beyond which it becomes a willful denial and not an honest mistake...

  12. ...have breakfast at lunchtime, but treat it as breakfast.

    That's cheating!

But news, yes, you don't say... Someone known by a business contact of mine has been on that plane that fell in France today. RIP, all 150 people on board... :-(

    Regards

  13. I hate breakfast. It's the worst meal of the day, and so many people agree with me.

In this I don't :-) I hate lunch though. I just fall asleep afterward - as siesta is not an option in my office - that means no lunch for me. :D

I also dislike a lot of healthy food, including cereals.

Cereals are so empty of anything they sometimes put iron filings in them to make them good for at least something... And, yeah, I'm automatically avoiding anything that says "healthy", "light", "low fat" etc on the tin. Usually, it means all the good bits are taken out and some crap added back to fill the space.

  14. Are these 4 pylons flexible? Would reduce drag if they could be straightened for atmospheric flight. Or, maybe, retracted, so they lie against the main hull conformally, with minimal gap. Then as the ship slows down or leaves the atmosphere they could be retracted again to do whatever they are supposed to do. :)

  15. Could have been worse. I barely escaped doing programmable calculators in reverse Polish notation...

    FORTRAN was fun though...
