There is nothing mutually exclusive between Christianity and science, including the Standard Model, the Big Bang and the evolution, unless one insists on taking an old collection of crowd-sourced memoirs and folklore tales as the absolute literal truth in every word of it. Even creation of the Universe by God is not excluded by science (although creation as in the Creation Museum certainly is). Regards

There is that, of course, and the fact that anyone can easily make it at home. But, also, alcohol has substantial cultural, culinary and medicinal significance beyond its psychotropic effects... That is so true and genetics play a big role, apparently. Regards

Same here. I just hope they won't make it into some kind of multiplayer-only abomination... Regards -
Sounds like one of those moments which opens an opportunity to make it up to her by, say, inviting her to dinner... Mine was slightly more embarrassing - I was submitting a course work on industrial automation where I had to design an analogue control network to automate some metallurgical machinery I was also designing. I thought I was very clever and came up with a network that I was sure would work but it broke a few rules which the professor (female) expressly taught us were "unbreakable". When she saw my schematics she rejected them, so I started to argue but to no avail. So she told me to just remove my clever bits and dumb the whole thing down. I was livid and as soon as I walked out of the room I loudly declared to my waiting friends that she was a stupid b*tch and that she knew nothing! I was expecting some commiseration and sympathy from them but got just blank stares and silence instead. So I turn around and there she stands, the professor, smirking at me... Regards

Firstly, for me personally, drugs are a total no go area (I don't count alcoholic drinks and tobacco as drugs, though I quit smoking long time ago). Something to just not do, ever. But illegality does nothing to prevent people from trying drugs. It probably also has a "forbidden fruit" effect, as well. On the other hand, the prohibition supports the entire illegal drugs industry* by giving the drug cartels a monopoly on the supply and distribution and by keeping the prices high. In turn, this pushes the addicts to commit crimes to fund their habit. That is my dilemma - I totally abhor drugs but I strongly suspect that the way the society handles the problem is actually making it worse... So, what to do? I don't know, prescriptions to addicts maybe? Also somebody somehow needs to make drugs look uncool for young people - making it freely available but associated with some stigma is probably a way to go. Like "only morons and duchebags use drugs" kind of thing... Regards *) - I actually think that a lot of opposition towards legalisation of drugs in the Western governments may ultimately be funded by cartels.

LOL! A bit too popsy for my liking, but a classic is a classic... Here's an unexpected gem - from their 2014 debut album. Heard it by chance, on a magazine cover disc... Regards

I may sound cynical, but I don't find the factors you listed as evidence that embryo/fetus is a person convincing. Motion and ability to respond to some outside stimuli is far from being enough in my view. For me the key consideration must be an ability to sense "self", to be self-aware. The 8 weeks you mention is way too premature to me. The embryo does not even become a fetus by then (fetal stage only begins at week 9). That's the whole point - it's not a human yet at the moment of termination. What it may or may not develop into should not be relevant at that stage. Do you mean as an alternative to IFV, maybe, rather than an abortion? Regards

I agree - education is the best (actually, the only civilised) way. Promotion of abstinence as a way of preventing unwanted pregnancies (especially teenage) simply doesn't work, even makes things worse IMHO... Regards

I am in favour of women having the option to terminate for any reason if they so wish, but observing a time-limit, beyond which abortion should only be allowed for medical reasons. I don't have a particular opinion on what the limit should be. Whatever the scientists say. In the UK the limit currently is 24 weeks. I don't subscribe to the "pro-life" idea that destroying any fertilised foetus is murder or represents "humans playing god". I personally don't have any memories of myself earlier than from the age of about 2 and so, I don't even consider that I was a person until then, but that's from my personal perspective. When you look into a newborn's eyes - you can clearly see a person and personality there from the first minute... I would also like to make sure that any woman deciding on abortion be made aware of all risks, including that of not being able to bear children in the future. And, preferably, I would want to make sure that the father's opinion is considered, but that depends on the circumstances. Regards

I think that people take natural selection too narrowly and that leads to false conclusions like the eugenics etc. From that perspective we are wasting resources and reducing the quality of our genetic pool by allowing the weak and the feeble to live and procreate. For myself, I decided long time ago that it is complete rubbish. By supporting our physically weak members we maximise the possibility that we capture all possible creativity and experience and maintain social cohesion. As the result, the groups that protect and nurture the weak have an evolutionary advantage over those that rely purely on physical strength, health and fitness. For an example of a group consisting of and run mostly by dumb but healthy youth - we can just take a look at ISIS. No matter how much panic they induce at the moment, in the end they will be outfoxed by the old and wise and crushed. Regards

The problem with Hydrogen is that it is not a source of energy - it is only a carrier. Production of H2 requires much more energy that can be usefully extracted out of it afterwards. And it brings me back to the same thing - energy availability is the real key to everything. The only real sources of energy on Earth are solar (it powers all of the biosphere, the wind and the petroleum itself can be seen as "condensed sun light") and nuclear. On the reduction of population - here I disagree very strongly. Our as yet unsolved problem is actually the lack of people in the developed world. As countries advance and their per-capita energy consumption approaches that of the developed world people stop having enough children. All the population growth in Europe is now due to the increase in life span and immigration from outside. If that trend continues, then when the entire planet reached the level of the First World our global population number will be declining. This is not a good prospect... Regards

Another sober opinion on the whole Ukrainian thing. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-31486886 BBC has been sounding like a voice of reason recently. As it is a politically powerful organisation, I cannot believe that this is a random occurrence. That gives me some hope that there is internal pressure in the powers that be in the UK to really find a solution. Regards

Should be perfectly safe if you don't forget the parachute. I agree with you regarding the importance of the feeling of spontaneity. I always rejected the idea of arranged relationships. However, I wonder if there is actually such thing as a non-date date? Isn't it like people simply hedging their bets emotionally, while still secretly or subconsciously exploring the possibilities, testing each other, just as if they admitted openly that they were on a date? Then there is usually a point where both sides know that something has changed yet they continue to act as if it hasn't, until either the moment is lost or one of them makes their move... There is a song* that perfectly captures that whole courtship process for me, from the man's point of view - what goes through the man's mind. I cannot hope to ever describe it better than Hammill did: Regards *) - I know it maybe getting old that I'm bringing up songs seemingly for every occasion and I humbly apologise, but I just can't help it

Practically everything in sustainability revolves around energy - heating, water, even fuel. If you have enough energy, you can live anywhere, you can make your fresh water or transport it from where there's plenty of it and you can synthesize your own hydrocarbons. I agree that burning oil is not ideal and we should get off it as soon as practically possible (but it won't be very soon because there's still a lot of it left and it's still easy to burn it and we will always exhaust the easy options before bringing ourselves to do something more difficult). Nuclear is the only realistic solution - fission (Thorium, as BTG suggests, would be nice but even plain old U will do) in the medium term, fusion (hopefully) in the long term perspective. Mineral resources - I don't worry about those, we have plenty. Also, as technology evolves it tends to do more with less - the efficiencies of material use are increasing. I deeply, deeply loath the idea of state meddling with artificial limits on consumption, luxury goods etc. - this always creates more problems than it solves as it confuses the market signals and lead, to under/overproduction, bubbles, it stifles innovation, etc. I am happy to agree with Dash on the matter of beef but purely for personal reasons - I don't like beef very much. Prefer pork or lamb any day But there is one interesting set of numbers that I find quite sobering when I hear people's fears of global overpopulation etc - if you put ALL people on the planet into a city with the population density of a major European city, like Paris, then such city will only need to be as big as France. Leaving the rest of the Earth's surface free for whatever use we may want to find for it... Regards

I read a paper some years back by some psychology professor where he proposed a theory that there is a biological imperative making it very difficult for men to refuse a woman's advances but not the other way round. I have to say, I find it easy to believe it's true... Regards
