Forward Unto Dawn I was unsure for the first half of the film whether I am watching a militaristic propaganda of the type of Soviet pre-WWII movies or a clever and deep exploration of a troubled society torn by deep internal conflicts, laced with satire and references to our times... Then the Master Chief came and - yep, militaristic propaganda drivel it is... Having said this, just like watching the old Soviet propaganda movies can be fun so, ultimately, was watching the FUD (who the hell came up with that name???). @Doublenature: Agree, "Into Darkness" is an achievement (maybe not the best film ever but very, very good). Damsel in Distress: Part 2 - Tropes vs Women in Video Games
Vapymid replied to HLPrincess's topic in Gaming in general
I find her arguments naively feminist (no surprise here). It's not that women look more attractive to men because they appear to be weak or subordinate, it's that it makes men feel strong and deserving of the woman in question. It answers to a genetically programmed need for a man to be a hero and to protect his female partner, the future mother of his offspring (or so he hopes). No amount of feminist wishful thinking is going to change it. So, damsel in distress - a plot device as old as the history of homo sapiens (maybe older) - may or may not suit a particular game, may or may not be used tactfully or appropriately, but it is just a matter of the talent and creativity (or the absence of it) of the developers and is not a battle in the war of sexes. By the way, there is no war of sexes Regards -

This type of DRM to me is on par with eating babies *and* killing little kittens - so the local cannibal is more likely to get any money from me than Ballmer. Hopefully, though, this will give a boost to PC games... Regards

*This* is old school Good old God of Hellfire, showing how it's done. Though, it's probably lost on the Glastonbury audience... ERFEEVO9chk And no burning helmet, a shame - must be because of Health and Safety. Regards

If you are talking about some historic rights going down to Iron Age Kingdom of Israel etc - I do not consider those a serious claim (not to say that other peoples, like Philistines in Gaza, seem to have claims of similar validity). Do some American Indian tribes have rights to claim back Manhattan? Should Spanish demands for "return" of Gibraltar be accepted? Should Falkland Islands be annexed by Argentina? Should Morocco be allowed to kick Spain out of Ceuta? Should Alsace be given to Germany? Does Mexico have a claim on Texas? I consider it all spurious politicking, which should not be taken seriously. As far as the legal rights are concerned, I believe that most countries in the world consider Israel's claims to East Jerusalem as illegitimate and their taking control of it - an illegal occupation. The resolution of this conflict depends on the compromise on Jerusalem. Current Jewish thinking is that any compromise on that is unacceptable. Therefore, the Israeli policy is to keep Palestinians in untenable position economically until they either starve to death or leave. There, however, does not appear to be an ultimate exit strategy for the Israelis except hoping that with time the Arabs will forget and forgive. This is clearly unrealistic and Arabs will seek vengeance for as long as both them and Israel continue to exist. Long term prospects are not good for Israel in this situation - the US support will be withdrawn in years or decades, at the most, whereupon Israel will be left alone to face a bunch of very angry enemies. Europe will not support Israel (if Israeli policies remain the same), neither will Russia. China does not know what or where Israel is. Africa has its own problems, so - no help from outside for the Jewish state unless they change their hard-headed and arrogant stance and seriously consider making peace with their neighbours and reach a compromise with the Palestinians. That's what I think. Regards

Quite possible: Energy released by the Nagasaki bomb - 8.8E13 Joules Energy released by a severe thunderstorm - 1E15 Joules (i.e. 11 times higher) Source: Orders of magnitude (energy) However, that depends on what the journos mean by "powerful". If they mean it in its proper physical sense, i.e. the rate of energy release over time, then they are wrong as in a nuclear explosion all of its energy is released in seconds, while in a storm it happens over minutes or hours. Seen any good machinima videos? Please post links here.

Having searched and searched for "The Last" and not found it anymore anywhere on the Internets, I dug out my old DVD I've made with that and reuploaded it here: One of the earliest and most elaborate HL2 machinimas in terms of character and plot development, if not in technical elements. About 40 minutes in length, it's worth a watch even though some scenes are just too long and static. Regards -
From Wikipedia: "In 2012, STRATCOM commander C. Robert Kehler said that the best estimates where "in the range of several hundred" warheads and FAS estimated the current total to be "approximately 240 warheads".[22] One three year study by Georgetown University raised the possibility that China had 3 000 nuclear weapons, hidden in a sophisticated tunnel network. The study was based on state media footage showing tunnel entrances, and estimated a 4 800 km (3 000 mile) network. The tunnel network was revealed after the 2008 Sichuan earthquake collapsed tunnels in the hills. China has confirmed the existing of the tunnel network.[23] [24] In response, the US military was ordered by law to study the possibility of this tunnel network concealing a nuclear arsenal. [25] A retired Russian officer also claimed that China had many more nuclear weapons, estimating the arsenal at 1 800 nuclear weapons". It's all crystal clear, as generally is everything concerning China... Regards

I'm sure you would also find it a bloody big tragedy, were you to be one of the few thousand... Anyway, in the Soviet Union it was common to think that we were just a couple of days away from the invasion of Japan when the US dropped the bombs and that the US have done that specifically to preempt Stalin from hitting Japan and showing the US "how it's done!" You see - every nation likes to brag about victories they woulda, coulda, shoulda have won if not for this or that.... Regards

The internet and YouTube, in particular, are full of Half-Life "playthroughs" and "speed runs" of the game - no one seems to care about it... That said, a lot depends on who holds copyright to FM videos. If Machinima can show they have the copyright they can send takedown demands under DMCA, they won't need to sue. Valve can do it in any case but I somehow doubt they would. But if the copyright is still with Ross, at least he can give Machinima a good fight without having too many lawyers involved... Regards

Freeman's Days - made in Russia! gotta see this!
Vapymid replied to HLPrincess's topic in Machinima in general
Yes, we do. Usually, it goes like this - a) getting bored to hell, b) can't bother to do anything because bored to hell, c) things go bad to worse to apocalyptic - cue much excitement in order to survive, d) survived, getting bored to hell... When things go too well for too long - seek help from the French or the Germans, when those aren't forthcoming - ask the Americans... Regards
