Pondering the impacts of compression-based space travel on a science fiction society, and video games placed therein. Pretty fascinating stuff, actually.

Well, at least my desktop is good. Pretty damned good, too. And I didn't really mean giving it away, no money to mail it anywhere.

Hey, anyone want a laptop that managed to get Windows 7 installed on it without removing XP properly, causing it to occasionally start in XP, become highly unstable and burn its core components? One that also can't shut down properly due to the same conflict, and thus can't restart, and can't install new software if it requires restarting? One that has a touchpad that can't be disabled and makes typing a monumentally difficult challenge but can't actually be used effectively as a touchpad? A computer that burns 40-60% of its RAM doing absolutely nothing because it's running two operating systems? A computer that is so weak it can't even run DOOM effectively, can't use modern microsoft office files and has issues with the internet and especially Youtube, where it flat-out doesn't work?
Yeah, didn't think so. On the plus side, when closed it makes a great mousepad.

Coffee. The nectar of the gods.

What's this about waking up in Eastern Europe?
It's something Freeman does at the beginning of Half-Life 2?
Oh, and Ross is now in Poland, so they made a joke about that.

Why does everyone like beer so much? Why is it the only thing available? It tastes DISGUSTING. I am sick to death of it. There is no alcohol I would not rather have.I know this complaint is petty and pointless, I don't care. Beer tastes disgusting.
I said this myself until I actually tasted a few good beers.
Try a few different brands of light beer and you'll probably find a few that you'll like.
I've tried more than a few. And not just lager, porter and ale as well. I hate the taste of hops. The closest thing I found to a beer I liked I'm not sure even qualifies because it's not made with hops, it's an apple ale. (Redd's apple ale, which I'm pretty sure is a cider, and it was pretty good.)

When I was in school, some of the computers would crash if you even brought up Solitaire, which IMO is an impressive feat.
Yeah, that's worse. A lot worse.
As for the laptop, I suspect it burning out its video card is why it can't play Doom. And fuck it, it's just a second screen anyway. It runs the internet fine, and that's all I need it to do: give me the ability to chat, check forums and post while using my good computer to play games.
-
I think I might settle for the "shotgun" option anyway. This piece of shit can't even handle Doom.
-
Well that makes sense.
Yeah, but it was freaky at first. And it made for a good joke.
-
I'd turn it off, open it up and look inside to see if you can figure out exactly what burned.
No, no. It was refreshingly direct during startup. The video card burned out. Its CPU apparently comes with onboard video as well, as a backup, so this isn't that surprising.
Also, it's a laptop. Opening it up is ill-advised.

My friend leant me an ancient Compaq a little while ago. The thing is slow, clumsy, has a terrible response time and can't handle complex tasks. At first I thought it was just a terrible computer, but today it fried. It bluescreened and filled the room with the smell of burning silicone. So I unplugged it, took it downstairs and set it on my desk to use as a mousepad. Then I noticed it making noise and vibrating, so I opened it up, and it started right back up good as new, STILL smelling like burnt silicone. And then I realized my earlier assessment had been inaccurate. It isn't slow and clumsy, with a terrible response time and inability to handle complex tasks because it's a terrible computer. It's slow and clumsy, with a terrible response time and inability to handle complex tasks because it's a FUCKING ZOMBIE. I'm not sure whether to keep using it, or take it outside and blast it with a shotgun for the safety of my other hardware.

I wonder how many people think the dev team was on drugs. I wish I could put up a poll for that.
And by the way, I LOVE the corruption jokes in DC. So very, very fitting.
EDIT:
And ninja'd by the first one to say it. You know, the the makers were really on LSD, he wouldn't be zipping across the states. He'd be carefully watching the voices of his band members and listening to the smell of his air freshener for the whole game. If you added crack he'd just be really enthusiastic about his entangled senses. (Not that this wouldn't be entertaining, of course.)

Black Butte porter. I hate it. One star. Would not drink again. I don't know why I bother trying new beers, especially lagers and porters, I only ever liked the one beer and it was an ale. And only a pseudo-ale, it was Redd's.

(I do believe this is part of the weapon listing for "fist" in the tabletop RPG my friend and I are working on.)
Whatever you do, please don't go the way of D&D... Level 50 = 10000 HP, enemy super-bosses swinging for 100...
OT: ;fl_iC`[email protected],e&59N
This game has bleed rules, actually. So high health scores are standard, although they don't increase with level unless you increase your constitution.
OT:
Swing damage: 1d8 bludgeon
Swipe damage: 1bludgeon
Swing and swipe advancement: 1W at 0 skill, 2W at 25
Swing and swipe penetration: 5
(This is clearly a burda, the sidearm in the "club" series. I copied this to paste in each weapon block in the "club" series, then modify as needed. Saves a lot of time. Doesn't have the thrust or jab lines because it's a club and can't do either, and as a club it's a simple weapon so it starts off strong and only advances once.)

Doesn't matter the relationship... It's nature to fall asleep in that situation, for that reason.
I'm just going to give in now.
-
(Why is it so hard to stay awake while holding a sleeping baby?)
Nature. When you're a parent, that's the only time you can sleep.
OT: Eating the previously mentioned pizza.
Well, I'm just helping my girlfriend babysit. I'm not the little girl's father. I guess I'm kindof unofficially her uncle, in a way, I guess?

I'll settle for becoming a robot.I fail to see how that makes any of this better.

Trying to find a good reason to stay awake and not give in to this toddler's sleep spell. (Why is it so hard to stay awake while holding a sleeping baby?)

Thermoelectric does generate more heat, but only away from the side you want to cool. (net result, not a problem for my theory)
Convection doesn't allow it, yet again. Heat doesn't stay in one place. Any extra heat you generate will spread throughout the ship, and with nothing directly contacting the ship on the outside far more will spread through the ship than radiate directly off on the side you want it.
I never said Ion thrusters didn't, they just put out significantly less than a standard rocket, and it is easy to lose it in the background. (talk to some of the people working at NASA, they'll tell you the same)They'd still be clearly visible anywhere between here and the moon, and still fairly visible beyond that.
I understand how computers work perfectly. Interfaces are a lot easier than you think, and reverse engineering our programming languages is not necessary. All you have to do is tap into the processor of one computer, and watch it run code for a few minutes to get a decent basic interface. (I've seen it done in-person twice)Is there a programmer in the audience to explain to him why this is ludicrous? And hell, why not get a hardware guy in here to explain the other half. I'm too tired to do it tonight.
I'd like to see some kind of proof that the sources from actual laser researchers on Wikipedia that I looked through are false concerning blooming.Read your own sources, you debunked yourself.

I am going to stop trying to understand it now. I am going to go calm down, and I shan't return to this discussion today. Maybe a different one, but not this.

Look, I am very, very strongly anti-war. I realize I am not impartial. But I just don't see the point in any of this. At all.
