I know it's sadistic and it probably reveals more of my inherent misanthropy than I should care to admit, but I love hearing stories or seeing videos of people getting into trouble with animals due to their own stupidity. Those TV programs titled "World's Worst Animal Attacks!" ought to be renamed "World's Least Deserving Recipients Of The Gift Of Life".

Actually, it's worse than that. At least if you find your computer can't handle a game, there's things you can do about it, and someday maybe you'll be able to play it. When a game has been intentionally killed, it's just over and there's no chance at all.

GN-z11 is a high-redshift galaxy found at the constellation Ursa Major, and is currently the oldest and most distant known galaxy in the Universe. GN-z11 has a spectroscopic redshift of z = 11.1 which corresponds to a comoving distance of about 32 billion light-years away from the Earth. GN-z11 is observed as it existed 13.4 billion years ago, just 400 million years after the Big Bang.

 

The galaxy was identified by a team studying data from the Hubble Space Telescope's Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS) and Spitzer Space Telescope's Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey-North (GOODS-North). The research team used Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 to measure the distance to GN-z11 spectroscopically, by splitting the light into its component colors to measure the redshift caused by the expansion of the universe. The findings, which were announced in March 2016, revealed the galaxy to be farther away than originally thought, at the distance limit of what Hubble can observe. GN-z11 is around 150 million years older than the previous record-holder EGSY8p7, and is observed (shortly after but) "very close to the end of the so-called Dark Ages of the universe", and (during but) "near the very beginning" of the reionization era.

 

GN-z11 is twenty-five times smaller than the Milky Way, has 1% of the Milky Way galaxy's mass, and is forming stars at a rate about twenty times faster than the Milky Way galaxy does today. With a stellar age estimated at 40 million years, it appears the galaxy formed its stars relatively rapidly. The fact that a galaxy so massive existed so soon after the first stars started to form is a challenge for some current theoretical models for the formation of galaxies.

I won't pretend to understand all the terminology, but being the starry-eyed exobiology/exoplanetary nerd I am I can't wondering what on earth life would be like in a so called GRB ("gamma ray burst") galaxy would be like, if it were at all possible.

Going off subject slightly, I recently watched a playthrough of an excellent quest mod revamp of the DLC Honest Hearts entitled Honest Hearts Reborn, which in my opinion rather improves the original narrative. I enjoyed the extrapolation on the origins of the Legion and the surprisingly sympathetic light cast on the New Caananites. If you are interested in a more detailed account of mormon beliefs, this is a worthwhile mod to check out.

I suffer from half-lycanthropy. Every full moon, the left side of my body transforms into a nightmarish lupine beast whilst the right side remains exactly the same. Any advice on how to cope with this affliction?

It's an extremely depressing (though perhaps inevitable) symptom of a world increasingly connected by social media. I'm not faulting the technology by any means, but a side effect of its prevalence is the evolution of a new breed of culturally adrift fools that will go to terrifying lengths to draw unwarranted attention to themselves. In lieu of endeavouring to do anything meaningful with their lives or even just trying to be decent individuals, they are willing to put their dignity on the backburner and even endanger themselves and others to leap on some idiotic bandwagon on "oneupmanship".

Like... really? You can't just, idk... ignore it? You have to go out of your way and take time out of your day to complain about a channel because you don't like that they aren't as good at video games as you are?

 

Look, you don't need to validate your dislike for something. Accept that you dislike it and move on instead of going to such great lengths to let the world know how upset you are over something so trivial and unimportant.

 

Also yes I realize I'm sorta doing the same thing but once I finish this post, unlike them, I plan to move on with my day.

That's the difference between you and the internets mouth breather populace. You post a complaint in a thread specifically created for the purpose of voicing complaints, then presumably do whatever it is you do to enjoy yourself and/or keep yourself alive. For the aforementioned Subreddit ab-humans however, pouring scorn on something largely inconsequential is a lifestyle choice - their raison d'être. One can only speculate what experiences or formative events drove them into becoming the the truly horrid individuals they are, but I suspect it's a sign that those people struggle to identify with anything more profound than their own basal interests.

I'm reminded of all the "I Hate [insert genre/band]" groups on last.fm, and thinking how utterly futile such a social activity is. I realize some people make or join internet groups more as a badge of honour rather than to actually discuss things with like-minded individuals, but I could never help asking those people why they felt the need. It seemed like a rather unproductive use of one's time, fixated on something they so avowedly dislike when they could be concentrating on the things they do enjoy. Also, I think it immediately and negatively labels a person (who might otherwise be a perfectly nice person) as a potentially unfriendly member of a community, thus encouraging other users to avoid them.

I imagine that's a common problem with musicians nowadays, I imagine with all the types of music and musicians out there making a song must be really hard.

Life in the palaeolithic must of been easier for budding musicians - give or take the ever present dangers of death, disease and giant flightless birds. Essentially all contemporary music is derivative of that first early hominid who discovered that banging a stick against a stone sounded pretty rad...

I think true originality in any musical or artistic medium is an impossibility, we are too culturally and socially hardwired to influence one another. We are the only species on Earth with the capacity and imagination to elevate noise into something fundamental to our identity, and we are abundantly aware of our history of transcending mundane distraction into lifelong endeavor.

Found two copies of Darkspore at a local store today Didn't buy them though :3 I didn't tell the store employees about the games "death" either!

 

Why would you boast about that? Do you have a personal reason you hate that store and the customers? If you have that much general contempt for other humans, fine, but we're other humans too...

I'm sort of with Presence here. Not everyone is going to be aware of EA's practices or even that Darkspore is for intents and purposes a discontinued game, especially young and inexperienced gamers or just more casual audience. Speaking as an avowed casual gamer (I'm the kind of person who finds the idea of playing Dark Souls untenable ;p) I wasn't aware of this aspect of current gaming business modus operandi until Ross made me aware of it via Gaming Dungeon.

It would be all too easy for someone like me to pick up a copy of a game like Darkspore (especially it was going cheap) based on the bio blurbs and marketing, and not even be aware of it's imminent status as a deceased and unsupported game. I think it's safe to say that this forums typical userbase is more wise to this nonsense and cynical enough not to be duped, but imagine being a kid and having to face up to the disappointment of having bought an inherently and purposefully extinct game. It would be like that feeling of naively buying a PC game only to realize your system can't handle the specifics.

You've gone all out in pitching this game for the series I hadn't even heard of it, but your description makes me hope Ross will consider covering it in a future episode.

Here's a personal favourite of mine: Gruntz (1999)

 

A Puzzle-Stratedgy game, with a storyline, custom levels and free-play. (Has multi-player, but I've never gotten it to work).

This was actually my childhood game, which I found on Real-Arcade as a demo, and eventually convinced my parents to purchase the full copy.

 

This game was developed by Monolith Productions, the same people who made Shadow of Mordor. But Gruntz was quickly forgotten after its release.

The thing that amazes me even more is that it's being managed and paid for by an Eighty-Three year old.

 

As I mentioned before, this does have its own storyline in single-player, but eventually you'll run out of these levels to play. Luckily, there's a handful of people whom have made custom levels for you to play on your own. I have no idea if the editor for these levels is still available. These custom levels are also found in the forum mentioned above.

 

Either way, I found this game to be an enjoyable experience. One I loved as a kid. I would love for someone to look this over, I think this game has potential to be a Game Dungeon episode.

 

I DO have a copy of this game, however it's not patched and doesn't include the cutscenes.

You mentioned Shadow of Mordor. I love seeing early games from companies that are now "the hot shit", to not put too fine a term on it. This also seems like the kind of game I could lose plenty of hours in, like I always did with the Worms series or more recently Hand of Fate.

Almost universally afraid of (to the point of superstition) Anvobaaw's smallest and most rapidly orbiting moon Anvobaaw VI, a relatively miniscule orange gas planet that streaks across Anvobaaw's opalescent sky in a matter of minutes.

Feeding habits: Stortooq are like most electrolapivorous lifeforms on the planet, in that they busily graze the surface of near constant growth of electrically imbued fragmentary minerals that generate within and around the edges of great fissures in the planet's surface. Being sentient however, the Stortooq have a strong communal mentality and carefully hedge prime fissures away from overtly rapacious species and even cultivate the growth of differing varieties of charged substances.
