In a way This discovery is thanks to Ross's Game Dungeon
So I recently discovered the channel, and have been binging it, and a combination of Ross's love of preserving game content, and the weird adventure games he plays, I started thinking about the Gobliiins series, in fact I commented with a request for that series in the newest video
Well, that got me thinking about gobliiins, and the first time I ever played it
Story time!
So when I was a kid in elementary school my parents bought me a game called Adi's comprehensive learning system 4th and 5th grade science
It was a game series that was targeted to elementary school children, and it included rewards for learning, these rewards were in the form of other commercial sierra releases, things like ecoquest, and Gobliiins
I was obsessed with Gobliiins, I played it constantly, it's a tricky game, but it's made up of one screen adventure puzzles so if you click around and try everything on everything you'll eventually progress
I made it all the way to 13, and this is what started me down the Rabbit-hole I went down
I was minding my own business when BAM naked woman in all her pixelated glory, it was the first pair of breasts I'd ever seen, even though they were only like two pixels lol
My parents were PISSED, this was scandelous for the late 90's, they complained to sierra and I was sent a free game as an apology
So I decided to ask reddit and posted to r/sierra and asked about the game, specifically to know if anyone had any info on this peculiarity, if there was any history to this, if anyone knew if Sierra ever fixed this in later releases, etc. I was invested
Nobody knew anything, in fact the one person who responded was super skeptical that this would ever have happened
So I had to prove it was real, I proved that by proving there was an uncensored version of gobliiins, and proving that gobliiins was included in ACLS, and that was enough to convince him, but now there was a doubt in my mind, did the game actually include the uncensored version of this game, or did I misremember? My mom said I was remembering correctly, but I still wasn't sure
So I started searching, and searching, the only info I could find was that ACLS existed was a youtube video and like two reddit posts asking about the game., I contacted a few people from youtube/reddit asking to help get proof, but nothing panned out
I then posted in the Pierre Gilhodes fan page on facebook, Pierre Gilhodes is the creator of the games, and I received a few disappointing answers. first someone told me that they had both the US floppy and CD release of Gobliiins, and neither of them were uncensored then Pierre himself commented, and stated that he was required to redraw the sprite with underwear for the US release
I now had been told by the creator himself that the US release was censored, but I still knew in my gut he was wrong
So I started searching for the game, and finally found a copy
Well, I booted it up through virtualbox, and explored the files and found Gobliiins in a stand alone folder, booted it up, skipped to level 14, and BAM There she was, in all her pixelated glory, I recorded for posterity, and here it is!
I posted my story on reddit, and finally received a comment from someone who had played ACLS who said that they hadn't gotten that far in Gobliiins because it was too hard.
So in the end, If the comments from the Pierre Gilhodes fan page are to be believed, I may have discovered the only way to play a US copy of Gobliiins uncensored, and if most kids were like the person who commented on reddit and didn't make it very far, I may be one of only a few people in the US who have ever played a legit copy of the US version of Gobliiins 3 uncensored, I'm not sure because I can't find much info on the censorship in the US
I Think this could be an interesting topic for Ross's game dungeon, I don't have a platform aside from reddit to tell people about this, and I think it's a really cool discovery. I don't know if ross would want to do a video on these games and cover this, but I'd love it if he would. If not I'd love some suggestions as to other youtubers who might be interested in covering something like this, it's just too cool to sit on
