Tom Hall is one of the most legendary developers in the industry, famously known as the father of Commander Keen and also worked on projects like Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Duke Nukem 2, Terminal Velocity and Prey. Here's a series of articles from 3D Realms showing the design document Tom Hall wrote in 1994 as tips to game designers. Some of these tips would still apply today in my opinion...
