The whole """hidden""" post-apocalyptic feel that Ross describes really reminds me of a game called "The Talos Principle (2014, rated 95% on steam)" (which is also a really good game currently on sale for US$8). The graphics are also vaguely similar in the sort of fidelity and theme. Can't say much without spoiling the story but it's portal-esque. Also on the thought of self-driving cars, the process you described could be described like a GAN neural network, where you pit two AI in a pit and have them "fight" - one to drive the cars and another to make the tracks. Each "trying" to optimize a different goal.
