For the most part, I agree... But if you don't have access to either of those, a VM beats not being able to play the game at all.

 

Also, I believe you're talking about the Glide API when you mention 3DFX? If so, you can actually use modern cards with a Glide wrapper to play Glide-capable games. http://www.zeus-software.com/downloads/nglide is one that I have used in the past, I think... It's been a while...

Also nowadays there are meta programs like this one that let you manage your dosbox so you can save config settings for each game individually without manually having to overwrite the config file. (It SUPPOSEDLY also has the ability to detect games and import their settings off of an online database, but I haven't been able to get it to work even once).
