I wish I could be joking. I even checked the Windows update logs.

It keeps trying to update, but it can't save the update data, so the update fails forever, and forever.

 

Here's proof that I'm NOT supposed to be on this version, yet here I am.

 

I've never seen anyone posting this solution, I feel like I'm the only one who truly figured out how to actually turn off updates, anything else is hogwash and does nothing at all, Windows can just override it.

Hi, lurker here. Watched the latest chat and wanted to comment on Windows 10 updates.

 

I'm using WUMT (Windows Update Minitool) and have been using it for last 1,5 years.

The only thing is that it has not been updated since 2016, but it still works. Essentially: Disable the automatic updates (using GPOs or just disable the Windows update service). Then you can use the WUMT to select and install whatever updates you like - just like in the older days.

 

However: Microsoft these days just bundles everything together in "Cumulative update for January 2019" and similar packages. So you cannot really pick and choose some specific KB. Still, the control is there.

Thank you for sharing that information about Windows updates.  I have not watched the video yet, however, I anticipate hearing Ross complain about the recent October 2018 build of Windows 10.  I had installed this wretched update a few weeks ago and had my user settings wiped and some data loss, along with Windows doubling my RAM usage at idle (2.5gb-ish to 5gb-ish).  I also saw the anti-malware process and system idle process start over-using my CPU, so the system turned into a complete slog.  As if it wasn't bad enough already, as long as you were booted into the O/S, the system would start using more RAM as the day progressed... Completely idle: no-tasking whatsoever.  I reverted back to build 1803 which worked flawlessly for me before the update.

 

I am unsure why this occurred on my desktop as several other systems I manage were updated to build 1809 (the October 2018 build) with no problems whatsoever.  At any rate, I hate this all-or-nothing mentality Micro$oft perpetuates with its update system.  I understand security is important and forcing updates promotes cyber-security resilience, but taking away an easily accessed inhibit function for updating is infuriating.  Not everyone with a personal computer is an irresponsible dolt.  Removing inhibit options is just them treating every PC owner as children. 

 

Oh yeah by-the-way: there is an inhibit function in the advanced windows updates settings that allows you to disable updates for a certain number of days, and an option to furlough feature updates for as long as 90 days.  Yeah...  Those settings don't work.  I tried to use both of them and was given a confirmation window that my settings were applied.  On reboot Windows was downloading away and scheduling an installation restart.  Even those running the professional edition are not exempt from oversight by almighty Microsoft.  

 

Spyware, bloatware, and restriction-ware.  No personal freedom at all in Windows-- though I guess it never existed to begin with.  I wish it was as simple as just switching to Linux, but that is a whole different discussion.

 

 

New Windows 10 updates are no longer tested in house. The entire QA department is pretty much gone.

I'm lying actually, but it doesn't feel too far off from the truth. I can't come up with a reason as to why they would do these updates so hastily.

 

I like to immagine that it's just management being a pain in the ass. Nobody is that incompetent, god I hope so. People do have a natural tedency to try their best, and to at least try to do well, when working on something as complicated as a whole operating system. You'd think these people would have higher quality standards by default either way.

 

If the Linux kernel released updates like these, they would become the laughing stock of all open source communities.

Earlier versions of Windows 10 might ironically be more stable than newer releases.

 

Even the LTSB release might be better in some cases. Anything closer to the Windows 7 / Windows 8 / Windows 8.1 versions should be stable enough. New Windows 10 releases are downright scary to update to.

 

Yeah, that's where it got to. Windows 10 is SCARY. I should be scared of Linux, not of Windows. High School should be scary, not Windows.

 

What are you doing Microsoft? It almost feels like you want to fail. Doesn't even feel like anybody is even trying anymore. Is Windows that much of a tangled mess by now? What the hell is going on. I would expect better from a trillion dollar company.

 

Sorry guys, Microsoft is a struggling indie start up, they still didn't figure it out.

It's not that I don't want to switch, but I'd have to give up a ton of good stuff, which only literally exists on Windows.

I would glady jump ship if someone made a Windows 10 clone.

I don't think it's about greed. To me it feels like there's no real focus at the moment, people are just sorta getting bored of doing any serious work, so they just start slapping on some new features to keep things more exciting. Biggest downside is, that the user is the one who suffers the most from all the "excitement".

 

I just think Windows is trying too hard to be cool, it needs to focus more on being boring, and usable, and to not fucking delete my data when I update the system. I mean, you know they reached a new low, when that's the main feature I want them to work on.

For anyone interesting, Microsoft has officially okay'd build 1809 for Windows 10 for public updating.  Allegedly, it will not delete user files anymore, and it won't double your idle resource usage.  I will update tonight and see if it still gives me the same errors.  (read above comments for more elaboration on the problems I, and others, had with the build last month).  

 

I will report on the effects of the update after installation.  If the same problems still occur, I guess I will just have to stick with build 1803.

So, 1809 no longer has the infamous CPU resource utilization problems as it did previously; however, my wallpaper and default application settings were altered in the update.  While these personal settings being changed is annoying, I can detect no data loss within my user folder as I did before.

 

My PC was still using double the RAM it did on 1803 and in previous builds, so I decided to do a little investigating since something felt out of place.  I performed a clean boot on my system, so that only Windows services and processes would be running at start up.  The resource usage at idle returned to normal, indicating Microsoft, and 1809, were not the direct cause of this sudden jump in resource usage. 

 

After re-enabling processes one-at-a-time, I discovered “Killer Network Service” was experiencing a memory leak in this new build, and was the culprit from the high RAM usage.  Because I have never used wireless cards in a desktop PC before buying this new one, I thought this software was necessary to run the card.  It turns out this software suite is completely unnecessary and only sits atop Windows’ own networking software. 

 

So, Windows 1809 seems usable now and does not seem to be deleting data or wasting system resources.  The high RAM usage I experience was a memory leak from a supplemental software suite that came pre-packaged with my PC.

 

Moral of the story: clean-boot before you fully blame Microsoft so you confirm non-Microsoft services are not causing the errors you experience; however, remember that Microsoft is still an evil company that doesn’t QA before feature updates because, in the end, they still pushed out a broken upgrade last Fall.

I'm too scared to switch, so I'll probably be sticking with 1709 for as long as I can.

Honestly, even a pirated copy of W10 with as much of the bad stuff disabled/deleted as possible, isn't terribly bad on 1809... Of course there is still a bit of spyware in there even so.

I don't feel like they made any real changes to warrant switching yet, and reinstalling Windows would waste too much time for me, as I have everything setup in a specific way, and I'm still paranoid about Windows randomly deleting my data. I would rather stick to this version, until I know for sure that the new release is okay.

 

It can't really hurt to wait, I'm already on Windows 10, so I'm not missing out on much. I feel like I'm more productive by not switching every month to a whole new version of Windows, I really wish Microsoft could do yearly updates instead, maybe even every two years. I don't care how long it takes them to be honest, but so far the latest updates have been pretty dissapointing for me, and it just caused some unecessary stress if anything.

No, I had no issues with switching to Windows Vista and to Windows 8.1. I would update if it wasn't literally for the risk of me losing my files. They are getting too careless and I don't see the point in risking right now, but no previous version of Windows deleted my files, and I'm one of those few people who hated Windows XP and actually liked Windows Vista.

Vista was great if you had at least 4GB of RAM, or was the "Ultimate" version. Anything else, and it had issues.

WIndows Vista was an interesting time for Windows.  I would not ever call it a favourite, but it was a great stepping stone toward the development of Windows 7 which, in my opinion, was the last good Windows.  Vista always gave me problems, and far-taxxed my system's resources back in the day. 

 

I was only ever on the Home version.  What did Ultimate do differently?  

It really didn't have anything seriously different, (mostly just additional language packs and a bit more "ultimate power user" access) but for some reason that nobody but Microsoft really knows for sure, it had none of the resource hogging of the other versions.
