  1. Here's the stream of playing the King's Quest VGA remake with Paul Morgan Stetler, we got about halfway through it, we'll probably finish it next Wednesday.
  2. New Game Dungeon! This actually wasn't the original one I had planned, so this turned into a substitute one, still a good pick for summer I think.

  6. Ask questions or topics to discuss in the link here for the next videochat with fans at 5:00pm UTC on June 17th at twitch.tv/rossbroadcast. My previous plans went to hell, but I'm trying hard to get the next Game Dungeon out before the next videochat, but it will be close. If it's not out by Saturday, it shouldn't be more than a day or two afterwards. Other videos still coming!

  8. I had a good discussion with sociologist and statistician Jacy Reese Anthis. I thought this one went really well, we talked about AI, consciousness, reality, some philosophy, and some directions society might be going in general. While we had different outlooks, I think I was able to get some answers I was looking for on AI. I think this chat was a good omen for future ones with people as a side thing I'm doing.

  10. I've heard several people bring up the paperclip maximizer scenario, but I feel like that would inevitably get cut off at some point, the longer it went on. Once the AI stopped doing what the manufacturer wanted, you would see more and more effort to shut it down. It would still be limited to whatever facilities it was given. At some point the metal to make more paperclips run out, or the company runs out of funds to order more metal, or the power gets cut off remotely, or a counter-AI gets deployed against it, etc. I could see a Machiavellian angle of convincing more people to assist it, but even that could only go so far before the authorities got involved and just treat it like a terrorist network. I'm having difficulty seeing how the AI would KEEP making paperclips unless it developed god-like powers also. This isn't to say it couldn't do damage, but its level of interaction with the real world v. the digital one is finite.
  11. Well in my limited testing, this pretty much does it. It was a much cleaner image than the bicubic one and while there was some very slight blurring on the text, I noticed part of the hud was cleaner on your version than the 4k 2x2 downsampling I posted earlier, and that was about as pure as it gets. I tested it 1NSANE at 4k to 1080, and in Judge Dredd from 1600x1200 to 800x600. It worked about how it should. Thanks a ton for the help. So the problem was that it only works for non-integer resolutions? That would explain why Unaccounted4's worked, since he was going from 4k to 1440? That is quite bizarre, but I'm glad you found a solution! I'll see if your theory holds up later using vanilla gamescope and can replicate the results. So for the record, you found a way to apply it to 2x integer-resolutions specifically and made a custom compile based off that? That's still weird they didn't support that in the first place.
  12. Just in case this is helpful, I took a screenshot of the blur introduced in the alternate gamescope ReflexiveTransativeClosure uploaded. Below it is a screenshot without AA at 4k which I took in Windows, then resized to 1080 using bilinear filtering to get 2x2 downsampling. If you look at the edge of the car or the "checkpoint" text, the introduced blur is more obvious
  13. I plan to do tests on an AMD card later, but I was under the assumption I could get downsampling working on an Nvidia card also. If that is in fact, not possible, I'll abandon it, but I was trying to get a clear answer one way or the other. As for your question, I don't know where the request would be coming from, it was specified at 4k for the sample game I ran. With your examples, that's easily explained. Neverwinter Nights is a 3D game and can be rendered at different resolutions. Both Diablo and FTL are 2D games, so there's no 3d data to render at a higher resolution.
  14. Well then how was @Unaccounted4 able to get it working then? His earlier screenshots definitely seem to be showing it. This is the first thing that DID work, however I think bicubic is the wrong way to go here. Besides having a bit of an oversharp effect in areas, overall, this introduces noticeably extra blur across the board, it kind of reminds me of old school Quincunx AA. Is there any way to have it just use a basic bilinear resampling filter instead? I think that would recreate the normal SSAA effect. I tried it without the dgvoodoo.conf line added. The result was the same, the only difference was the resolution on the wheel in the menu was lower. Any more ideas why it's not working on my end? Do you think this is an Nvidia v. AMD issue or something else?
  15. I don't get it, I still can't get downsampling working at all. I'm attaching some screenshots, maybe you can point out what I'm doing wrong:
  16. Well I'm trying to figure where it's coming from that people think AI is going to become sentient, but I haven't heard any clear arguments that I think hold up to scrutiny yet, so I find it helpful being able to ask people this who can explain it directly so I can close the book on this one way or another. For what it's worth, I have about half a dozen people in the future where it won't be about AI, so this is just kind of winding down after the last talk.
  17. I'll be having another discussion about AI with sociologist / statistician Jacy Reese Anthis of the Sentience Institute at 5:10pm UTC on June 5th on twitch.tv/rossbroadcast. After the last interview, he reached out to me and I think his background should give us a lot to talk about. I also think this discussion will be more likely to be what I was looking for than the previous one. We'll be talking a lot about AI and consciousness and how AI might be likely to shape society. Additionally, I plan to ask him some sociology questions in general and try to make some predictions about where we're heading as a civilization.

  19. I'm a bit confused. Is that true of Gamescope in general, or just 1NSANE? Additionally, what about 4:3 resolutions? EDIT: Just to clarify, is the situation also like this: -If the game doesn't support higher resolutions natively (like Dredd, Messiah), then dgvoodoo2 is required in order to bump up the resolution in order for gamescope to work? -If the game does support higher resolutions (like 1NSANE, most modern titles), then dgvoodoo2 is not required to bump up the resolution and use gamescope or does it depend on the game?
  20. I was ignoring the menu for testing purposes and only looking at in-game. I can say with confidence there is zero AA occurring, the pixels are clear as day. I can take a screenshot later if that helps. EDIT: Wait, I might be dumb. I could have had the output and game resolution mixed up from looking at your screenshot. I thought game resolution was what to render it at in-game and output was what it should render at on your actual screen. So say you wanted 4k downsampled to 1080. I thought 4k = game resolution, 1080 = output. Do I have that reversed?
  21. Okay, I have some more issues, gamescope is working, but I'm either using it incorrectly or else have a deeper problem. The whole reason I want gamescope is to have downsampling (rendering at a higher resolution to rescale it so you effectively get antialiasing). So far, I haven't been able to make that happen on anything I've tested, nor can I get it to even hit native resolution sometimes. I tested 4 games + glxgears on a 1920x1200 monitor: glxgears (gamescope -f -w 3840 -h 2400 -W 1920 -H 1200 -- glxgears): Can't get native resolution. It's running at a low resolution (maybe 640 x 480, not sure), then being stretched to full screen. 1NSANE ( both with and without Resolution = h:3840, v:2400 added to corresponding dgvoodoo.conf file) Runs at native resolution. Have the ability to set the resolution to 3840x2400 in the options menu. In-game, still only runs at native resolution, no downsampling occuring. Messiah: Same as above, only works at native resolution, though no in-game option for higher resolutions (the 3840x2400 is set in the dgvoodoo.conf file though). Judge Dredd v. Death: Locks up if I try the dgvoodoo option. Without it, I still don't have the option for a higher resolution in-game with Gamescope, it's just being stretched from low-resolution to full screen again. Warhammer: Mark of Chaos: freezes on launch when gamescope enabled I think I must be missing a step, but not sure where to proceed.
  22. You can blame me for that, it's about 80% the same as my rough draft. I was mixing multiple concepts, but I was trying to indicate the fantasy risks all stem directly from superintelligence being achieved, so I wanted that right in the center so it couldn't be ignored. It could have been better, but it probably would have taken even more space too. For some reason the main website rejected the image, the web guy helping me doesn't know why, other PNGs uploaded fine. It could be I'm conflating too much, but this is where I question the "smarter" part of it, I think that's a term thrown around also that's relative. Who is smarter, the average person or the entire encyclopedia? The encyclopedia has much of collected knowledge about the world, more than the average person ever will. But that's data just sitting there and has no context without us. Meanwhile, the average person can decide they want to start a farm to grow food, mine metal, try to locate new stars. An AI can't do that unless it's been given that initiative by its programming somehow. I think that distinction is enormous and thus only makes them tools. Yes, there can be some risks from them, but I'm struggling to find the humanity-threatening risk in this moreso than anything we're already doing without AI.
  23. This is definitely what got it working (after uninstalling everything else), thanks a bunch. I'm still having some issues with Lutris, but I confirmed it works in glxgears and works on some games in Lutris (before changing any resolutions). I was going to investigate that further, but I ran into another issue: Since I don't exactly know what I'm doing, I thought I would run this command again: sudo setcap 'cap_sys_nice=eip' /usr/games/gamescope It looks like that broke everything and I got the old error again. Is there a command to revert it back? Once I get it working normally again, I'll test it on some games to see if I can establish some other behavior issues I was seeing.
  24. I'm afraid we're stuck with that, but I'm fine if you want to link to pastebin or something if it's a problem. Yes I do. Also, a couple WINE games run with DXVK and dgvoodoo2 with gamescope disabled, so my understanding is that it's using Vulkan then instead of OpenGL This is likely at least part of the problem, I was suspecting this: getcap /usr/games/gamescope = nothing getcap /usr/bin/gamescope = I get the message you described Apparently not, I get /usr/bin/gamescope. I'm ignorant on this, but the gamescope in /bin/ is about 660k and the one in /games/ is about 12MB, which left me confused. I could be barking up the wrong tree now, but I tried this from the compiled gamescope: sudo cp gamescope /usr/bin/ This led to the following messages (after doing your latest instructions) gamescope -f -- glxgears Running Judge Dredd on Lutris in DXVK with gamescope (looks like the same main error, there could be small differences since the earlier one was an old log): Let me know what I should do next, thanks.
  25. Here is the May videochat. Had a lot of announcements this time, on more videos, possibly more interviews, a bit of a followup on the AI discussion earlier. It ended up a bit of a blur to me again, there was definitely some discussion on emulation, Microsoft / Blizzard buyout, misc. stuff. I'm pretty sure I misread question and said "there are two points" then forgot to say the second one.
