In case you havent heard yet, gamefront is shutting down. http://www.gamefront.com/gamefront-is-closing-down-april-30-2016/

Since it also hosts (at time of writing this) many mods & such, you may want to take action to preserve those files, if you have favourite mod there

does this also go under killing games? Well, ok, technically it isnt games, but some mods uploaded there are total conversions. And site was rather popular among modders even until now

I've actually been thinking about the Nexus for a long time and how they could benefit from expanding, especially since another big website shut down a few years ago. I forget the name. Also, some mods CAN be classified as games. Remember, Counter Strike was originally a mod for Half Life.

Not a big surprise - its not the first and not the last gaming site shutting down. The market is so oversaturated with all kinds of webpages trying to make a living (lets be real here, everyone is trying to make a living). Lately it seems that gaming journalism, hosting sites, servers etc is becoming less and less viable - especially if you are employing people. Just look at gametrailers...

Back to this site - just look at what they are offering...

1) patches - really? Its just out of date tbh... First of all, you have really loads of people using clients with automatic updates - steam, origin, uplay. Even if you don't have games on any of these systems - a game will most likely have an automatic updater or a way to check for updates and download off the official site. For older games - well it becomes a matter of interest - yes, those are harder to get but if you get lets say 5 downloads a month or maybe even 0 for an 15 year old game - is it really worth the server space?

2) mods - well this is a tricky one - there are many sites, for some games such place as Nexus is the dominant player here. Also Steam workshop is huge competition for many titles.

3) other freeware, demos - same as everything else - there are already a million webpages with it, some of it is on official webpages...

So combine all of this with less and less ad revenue (this seems to be the overall trend both on webpages and on youtube) and you get closures.

Well, Fric, you are correct, though as far as mods go, gamefront was THE spot to upload your mods for years, meaning that its closure will probably mean permanent loss of several mods. It didnt offer best catalogue or such, but still, majority of older ModDB & nexusmods mods were at some point or another uploaded in there and some mods have its single downloadable copy uploaded there
