You can't actually use any of steam's social services unless you have made a purchase of at least 5$, which is why I prefer discord. But I do acknowledge their flaws and shortcomings.

Odd... I had no knowledge of this limitation. Still, that's a one-time $5 purchase for a lifetime of Steam.
