And I think that if people are allowed to set their own custom titles at all, it should only be after they have say, a certain amount of reputation etc. A reward for being a good citizen as it were.

I don't think 'rewards' based on how many posts you have are a good thing because it encourages spam.

Thats why the you only get the reward if you have both a good rep and post count showing your posts have quality and you're active

 

The mix between post count and quality of posts should define title a person has

 

And it's not just going to be the reward of a new rank, it could also give you access to different features
