Freeman's Mind - Correctly formatted Italian subtitles

Recommended Posts

Since it was recently brought up in the Stop Killing Games Discord server, I'd like to bring up this topic again for posterity.

@BIRB's Italian subtitles for Freeman's Mind aren't correctly displayed on YouTube. This is how they're actually supposed to be appear. On YouTube, they only appear in plain text, even breaking and displaying color tags at some points. This is not how they were designed, but more importantly, all these features are available on YouTube.

Why does this happen? Because YouTube is picky about its subtitle formats. They're not all equally created. SRTs do not accept color markup on YouTube, but SMI subtitles do. You need to use the right format for which features you want to include, and the syntax is different between each one. That's why I've published subtitles in formats from SRTs, SMIs, WebVTTs, and SRV3/YTTs, depending on the needs of the subtitle.

BIRB has given me permission to reupload them, hence the playlist of reformatted captions, and I already did the hard part of converting/uploading each subtitle in SMI format, and making sure each file is on the correct video, which isn't always the case on the original forum posts. Only the last 15 episodes and FM2 are exempt from the playlist. It's fair to say displaying them as originally intended by the author would be preferable to arbitrarily stripping them of their features specifically designed for this series.

There's a few ways to rectify this. You can:

  1. Simply click "download" on each video's subtitles on the playlist as SMI (slower since it's not a one-button press)
  2. With video owner permissions—Click "Publish to YouTube" on Captionfy for instant uploading (I've personally tested this one and it works)
  3. Have me do it myself as a hobby project, attaching the correctly reformatted SMIs back on the forums to be reuploaded one at a time/in batches, or granting me "subtitle editor" permissions to subcontract it.
  4. Go through the forum post, downloading either the SMI inside the RAR, or saving the SRT as an SMI in Subtitle Edit (which does convert it correctly, unlike the ancient Subtitle Workshop)

The webpage on Captionfy only goes up to Freeman's Mind: Episode 53.  If there's a second page of subtitles, I'm not seeing a way to get to this second page.  I see now that BIRB has the SMIs inside the zips for Episode 54 onwards on the forum.  I can upload those.

I have uploaded what I could.  However, from Freeman's Mind 2: Episode 2 to Freeman's Mind 2: Episode 7, all that was uploaded was SRTs.  And starting at Freeman's Mind 2: Episode 8 through to Freeman's Mind 2: Episode 17, the .zip files contained .SBVs and not .SMIs. I uploaded those though to the videos.

BIRB made color subtitles correctly. YouTube does not read them correctly. A simple SRT > SMI conversion fixes this.

1. Download BIRB's .SRTs on the forums, starting from Episode 54.

2. Manually save each .SRT as an .SMI (with a program such as "Subtitle Edit")

3. Upload to YouTube

The end

Spoiler

Confusing long version:

After explaining this to BIRB, they started uploading SMIs. You'd think that'd be good, except they're COLORLESS, entirely wasting the SMI format. Therefore, I did the conversion myself for Episodes 1-53, and uploaded on Captionfy, purely to demonstrate their full features. I and Captionfy are UNNECESSARY. All you need is to convert BIRB's SRTs to SMIs. So whatever you do, don't use BIRB's SMIs, SBVs, RARs, or any other files.

tl;dr:

BIRB's .SRTs > "Save As" .SMI > Upload to YouTube
