The person is not wholly separate from the idea. You can't have a meaningful discussion with someone vocally admitting to arguing in bad faith. When he says "I am not going to read anything you put in front of me", how are you supposed to attack that? So long as we're taking the values-neutral approach, this is just going to happen over and over until someone gives up the war of attrition, and it's not fun for anybody.

People are inherently prejudiced toward or against every superficial trait you can find on someone, that doesn't mean putting stock in them is desirable or that the playing field is in any way level. Saying "well we're all a little racist" is just a personal convenience to excuse whatever you feel like. Everyone's a little bit bisexual too, but that doesn't mean every supposed heterosexual will feel attracted to the same sex in their life. Do they deserve to be called liars just because the theoretical possibility of that exists?

I mean...yeah there is. "The other guy" is not an entire ethnic group(s). Humans are also naturally cooperative and social. Every time someone isn't is a choice they make.

I think that's pretty subjective. If his themes, elements, characters and general plotlines were good...then by quite a number of respects, his writing was good. I guess you're saying his prose was bad? I agree, in that case. It's not fun to read, even if cosmic monstrosities are cool. But also, a lot of the themes were just thinly-veiled "person of other ethnicity causes me great existential terror" (which I'm guessing is why OP wants to get into it), so I'd wait a second before calling it good across the board ?

I mean, I'd less blame individual citizens and more the systems that make helping others incredibly difficult. Nobody likes the military coup in Myanmar, but fixing your internet is a thing you can do right now. That is to say, you can judge a population all you want, but the well is being poisoned from the top-down, so your results are going to necessarily be biased. Someone who calls any assistance of the disadvantaged "socialism" isn't just saying that because they're an asshole, but because there is a complex network of opportunists and grifters whose livelihood depends on as many people thinking that way as possible.

The bad things he did haven't gone away yet, and his rhetorical and political trademarks are going to color the entire political spectrum for decades to come. You're going to hear fake "voter fraud" comments every single time an election doesn't give conservatives their oligarch for the next several years at least.

I mean, being a long continuous sequence is kind of the point of Half-Life. I'm not sure how much they'll be able to find enjoyment in if the first episode doesn't do anything for them. If you have to start somewhere else, I guess episode 15 is where I'd say. Blast Pit always struck me as the most memorable sequence, which is funny considering what a pain it is to play.

I would disagree, in that Death Note and Hunter X Hunter have pretty great first episodes, Code Geass is kind of stupid, and I haven't seen Monster.

I dunno, I can't really name any great TV shows that didn't start on a good first episode, unless maybe something went really weird with production or else the first episode is just filler content, like with Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. I guess I don't like the first episode of Bojack Horseman all that much, but that's definitely the exception to the rule, and it obviously didn't turn me off the show.
