Videochat October 2021

October videochat with fans. I felt like this one was above average and felt about 15% less crazy than usual after doing these. Talked some about a future Carrington Event, how to take over the world, immersive sim games, and if being an alien would affect my life.

More videos coming this month + I’ll be streaming Sunless Sea at 5PM UTC on October 9th, (probably additional days too) at twitch.tv/rossbroadcast.

A video on Linux Gaming? You had my curiosity all along, good Sir, but now you have my attention.

Linux doesn't need more attention. It should be a secret club.

I fully agree.

There is a reason why universities require you to pass an exam to enter them, and this reason is called "signal to noise ratio". For every open source project that tried to become more "user-oriented" (which is a euphemism for "dumbed down"), it was the beginning of an end.

I wouldn't agree with that, necessarily. I think the last decade has proved that Linux can be user-friendly and painless, you just need big initiatives and some corporate backing to push it forward (Android and Proton).

Android

I find it hilarious that you mentioned Android, because it's a perfect example of what I said. It's not Linux, it's its withered husk serving Google.

Okay, yes, Android is not at all what Stallman envisioned, but from the Eric S. Raymond perspective, I think it's an example of Linux's slow, steady progress in winning the computer wars. Linux wins not by crushing the competition via strict adherence to the command line, it wins by being the freer and friendlier option, to the point that even rivals like Microsoft will have to buy in: http://esr.ibiblio.org/?p=8764

Android is just one of many ways in which huge corps are taking over the open source world. It's not free and it's not open source so I dunno wtf you're talking about.

I don't care about Freedom™, I just want a properly functioning OS.

For example, Sailfish OS (that I have been using for the past 8 years) is closed source, so it's "not at all what Stallman envisioned" either. But it has root and SSH out of the box, it's completely native (no Java or other managed code crap) so it's an order of magnitude faster and more energy effective, it has 100% multitasking support, etc. This is what proper Linux looks like.

I want an esoteric OS that is hard to use in the hands of the uninitiated. I have to solve worthless math olympiad riddles during interviews because the job market is oversaturated with usability queens.

cli "ayyy, Linux what do lmao"

Guess I'm off to find a job now

Jesus, well excuse me for being a dude who just doesn't want to pay Microsoft for fucking Solitaire.

Spoiler

I'm not actually mad or anything, I've had plenty of people be courteous to me when I was just starting out on Linux.

Disco Elysium might be a better game for you to stream than Sunless Sea. Especially since it's about cops and gets very psychological.

Seems like Ross doesn't like to read in-game text aloud, so streaming Disco Elysium would be 99% dead air.
