When you first meet Mossman in the decontamination chamber, she says, "I'm Dr. Mossman, Dr. Judith Mossman. I've been hearing of you since long before the Black Mesa incident. Ohh, Black Mesa... I do so envy you working with Eli and Dr. Kleiner when they were at the top of their field." Later, Alyx complains about Mossman saying that she goes on and on that "it should've been her in the test chamber that day". It appears that Mossman applied for a job at Black Mesa and was in a dead heat with Gordon but he had more experience so got the job over her and she held resentment towards Gordon until at least she meets Gordon at Black Mesa East. Gina Cross apparently was already working at Black Mesa enough to at least film for the hazard course hologram. Maybe Mossman went to work for Aperture Science until she realized that GLaDOS was insane and escaped just in time before the neurotoxins killed everyone....

I think it would be funny for Barney to remember Gordon but Gordon not paying Barney (whom he would consider beneath him and just another security guard or something) any notice during his time at Black Mesa. I don't know; I thought that Barney basically believing that he and Gordon being best friends while Gordon not even knowing who he was would be hilarious. ("You guys all look the same to me anyway.") Oh well.

Barney: "Now, about that beer I owe you." Gordon: "What?" Barney: "It's me, Gordon. Barney, from Black Mesa." Gordon: "I don't know who you are, but you have beer? Where is it?"

In universe, it is known that Gordon has the ability to speak. In Freeman's acceptance letter, "the Office of the Administrator" (LM) writes: Telephone conversation? I suppose it's possible that Gordon communicated via a TDD, but I think some sort of reference would be made to Gordon's inability to speak in the letter. Something like, "Due to your mutism, we are providing you with a TTS device for communicating with your colleagues" or something. Nothing like this appears on the letter. This leads me to believe that it was a speaking conversation on the telephone and that Gordon has the ability to speak. However, he either chooses not to (what I voted for in this poll), doesn't have anything to say, or you just can't hear his voice as evidenced by his ability to order the rebels in HL2.
