School

Recommended Posts

My school had gifted classes, but NO idea how to actually deal with gifted students - especially when some of us were smarter than the teacher - so their educational philosophy was "pile more work on them, till they can't stand up and cause trouble."

Meanwhile, they expended SCADS of resources trying to teach the kids who considered it a major accomplishment if they tied their shoes right.

He just kept talking and talking in one long incredibly unbroken sentence moving from topic to topic so that no one had a chance to interrupt it was really quite hypnotic...

Yeah, school systems are dumb. That's why I'm homeschooling the rest of high school.

home-schooling's the easy way out. trust me, school is better, no matter what the system is.

I was homeschooled... It isn't easy. I had to teach myself Algebra 2, Trig, Geometry, and Physics.

it wasn't called "gifted" in my school, and we weren't stupid, just a bit of difficulty with retaining mathematical information (in my case at least).

Same, but it's not really the retaining the info that's the problem... It's that the curriculum teaches you to beat the standardized tests, and never teaches you the actual workings of the math. Your mind rebels and says it won't continue to process like that until the process is explained to it... In the end it looks like you're retarded when it comes to math, so the school tries to lump you in with those that really are in need of that 'special' help.

Did "Gifted" mean "class for the stupid kids" for you guys? I was put in actual "Gifted" student classes because of high test scores. It was for advanced material the rest of the class wasn't doing.

I used to get 90% or better on all the standardized tests, but fail everything else because the curriculum sucked. (I was learning the real info at home when I asked my parents about what I was learning in school; 10 minutes with my Dad taught me more about math than 72 hours of class at school)

Don't insult me. I have trained professionals to do that.

couldn't have said it better myself Rusty, i usually had to have things like geometry explained to me in a very special way or else i wouldn't understand it at all.

your dad sounds like a very intelligent man by the way.

He was Data Processing in the Navy. Most of the computer programs that he wrote for the Supply guys became national standards.

i'll digress for a moment and say that i'm basically a clone of my father (Robin) in looks an personality, i swear a pic i saw of him when he was my age.. somebody could've mistook him for me. he is the reason i got through schooling, and he is the reason i'm going to college here soon..I fucking love my dad..

i'm still debating on going to the army or the marines. only thing stopping me is, in a nutshell, i'm terrified of death. they'll definitely help me with college, if i understand it correctly.

Navy is better. They have better pay, better food, shorter training times, better schools, and better jobs when you get out.

I've got a tiny sliver of vacation left before school. Isn't it funny how school looks like it'll be good this year, that is until you actually get there.
