Hi again,

I did some research and found a thread on Machinima.com's forum concerning the "Legality of Machinima". I'm not an expert on legal matters, but it seems even "donations" may be infringing on Copyright restrictions.

Anyway, here's the link to the forum thread: http://www.machinima.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2...

It doesn't seem like Valve is anywhere close to the place Microsoft is now concerning Machinima, even though they have an infinitely better distribution system (steam). Microsoft is willing to negotiate licensing deals without money up front!

Ideally, I'd like to see Valve distribute your work though Steam on a commission basis... they claim to have 20 million members, and if even 1% of them were willing to spend 25 cents an episode, Valve would make $50,000 per episode... give you 20%, and that's almost a million bucks off of just Freeman's Mind. I doubt they'd have much trouble with bandwidth, especially if they re-encode it. Ah, the fun of idle math...

I'll talk to my friend in VA tomorrow, and let you know what he thinks.

Thanks for the reply!

~ David

I don't know who you are or anything about what you do, but I can sympathise with your situation. It sounds like you discovered that doing work in a commercial environment conflicts with doing good work. That's very hard to deal with if you actually care more about your work than your paycheck.

Putting a deadline on the funny is like squeezing a bird to make it sing louder, so here's to your improved health and reduced stress levels.

This may sound saft but have you ever thought of contacting the escapist about them taking either Freemans mind (less likely) or Civil Protection (much more likely)? They are apparently a good company to work for. Anyway, good luck in the future.

I'm 37, from Croatia, and I just love your work. It's hillarious, amusing and right in the gamer's vein

Hope all would end up for the best. Good luck with your work, as much as I am sorry to miss ep24...

I understand how it is. You're trying to keep a good quality, but still make the deadline and you fear your work will just turn to crud.

And I agree, the Source engine isn't fun to work with. You can video capture while playing but unless its uncompressed, it uses a lot of CPU. Which means a few minutes is a few hundred MBs. Not good. I've had a few good ideas for a GMOD vid. Like, the PortalPotty, haha. Probably do a Billy Mays spoof with it.

I'm sure you'll have some surprise when you start back to work. And the next Freeman's Mind or Civil Protection will be great. Also looking forward to your other shows. Good luck, man.

Good luck, and I hope it works out well for you. Getting the work versus the rest of life balance wrong is only sustainable for a little while. Take some time, recuperate and then see where you are.

Let us know when the Freeman's Mind DVD(s) will be released. I for one will definitely buy one (and it doesn't have to be a professionally produced DVD).

Hey! Thanks for the marathon month on Freeman's Mind. It offered me the opportunity to discover this project and your other work. (It also moved me to play through HL2 and the episodes.) As an artist, I totally understand your choices in priority. Good luck with everything. I'm sure we'll all appreciate your attention to quality over quantity.

No matter what, stay funny and passionate!

Best of luck, Freeman's mind was one of the few things I look forward to on the internet, I hope you can find a way to continue that endeavor.

Anonymous at 08:47:39 - I agree. Porn and Ross Scott are the things that keep the internet alive.

I haven't read any of the other comments on this sight, but I hope they have been supportive of you. I realize that I haven't been as support of of machinima and have joined on demonizing them on more than one occasion. Its a bummer that things didn't work out, but I am sure that new oppertunities will open up for you. Thank you for your time and dedication to making sure that you preform at your best and that your fans recieve the best. I will keep following you and hope you find a medium that makes you happy.

Sincerely,

Joel

Well, that's unfortunate. I am not a fan of very much of the work put out by Machinima. Either the production values stink, horrible voice acting, or 4th grade level humor.

I truly enjoy your work, both Civil Protection and Freeman's Mind (particularly Freeman's Mind). Best of luck!
