Mechanics in games that should just die.
Selfsurprise replied to BidetoftheDead's topic in Gaming in general
Isn't this just a slightly more specific version of the "pet peeves" thread? I'm not complaining, sorry... (o_o) I've never like automated context-sensitive jumping, i.e. the kind that requires a specific placement of the player which results in an activation of a jumping animation, assuming it's a straight 3D adventure game and not some interactive narrative type title like Until Dawn or Fahrenheit. I don't mind this kind of movement activation if it's pull off some special gory kill move in the style of the God Of War games, but I still prefer being able to jump and attack freely in platformers. -
Going off the topic a smidge, does anybody have a hard time distinguishing folks gender on forums? I know it's deeply unimportant in the grand scheme of things and I'm not going to respond to posters any differently regardless of their sex, but I worry about offending folks with the incorrect suffix or making assumptions based on their avatar or username. It's a minefield of internet etiquette that the forums format is ill-equipped to assail.

^ I don't think anybody can deny that!

I tried. I really fucking tried. I have people in my class asking me favors for things that they could easily do. I'm usually an obliging person, but once they get too comfortable with asking favors, to the point of annoyance. I want to tell them to stop. If I could reach through the internet via astral projection and hug you, I would. I think I'm a rather fair person, and reading some of your posts here I get the impression that (like me) what you want more than anything is to be kind and reasonable to as many of your contemporaries as possible. I've been stung so many times by people's callous selfishness and unfair approaches to life, and despite my own jaded cynicism I still occasionally fall for it. How old are you AP? The feeling of outrage and betrayal you might be feeling at other folks selfishness doesn't really get any easier, but I think the older one gets the easier it is to reserve your kindness and put your hands up to all but the most worthwhile individuals. Needless to say that in this specific instance I've learned my lesson, I won't be doing my aforementioned colleague any kind turns in the foreseeable future. You give people an inch, they take several dozen parsecs... ;p

I find that fire works best. What genre of music is your least favourite? One of the many many reasons I love Dungeons & Dragons is the absurd variety of Dragon types available, both in official products, secondary d20 licenses and fan homebrew stuff. One of my favourites Dragon-related monsters is the Squamous Spewer, an enormous amorphous mass of draconic scales, eyes, teeth and other odd limbs and features.

Whilst gloating over his newly acquired stronghold, PsychoticNinja gets a phone call from his horrible job in retail to do a ten hour overtime shift. Reluctantly he agrees to do it and forgets to lock the gate. Selfsurprise then sneakily enters the site with a bunch of drug addicts and middle-class squatters versed in the literature of Antonio Gramsci, changes the locks and turns the hill into a giant anarchist commune-cum-crackhouse. Because property is an illusory construct created by an elite to deny the freedoms of the proletariat, the hill now belongs to no-one... ;P Jus' kiddin', it belongs to me.

I'm glad this week is over, it's dragged on something fierce. Last Wednesday I did one of my colleagues a favour by working his shift (I usually have Wednesdays off) with the understanding that he will cover one the shifts later in the week when I'm alone all afternoon. Well he's dragged his feet and "ummed" and "ah'ed" through my inquiries into which day he was willing to work. After a week of fending off my reasonable request he suddenly decided he has a wholly imaginary dentist appointment this Thursday - and it just so happens he's now on holiday for two weeks. Want my advice? Don't do anybody any favours, ever.

Wolfenstein (2009) - Vami vs. Bad Research

I've just sent him a PM regarding this thread, but I'm not sure if he reads them. -
The last time I did any proper slogging-through a game was Final Fantasy 13, namely managing to defeat Vercingetorix and Long Gui.

Russia hasn't just sent mutant occult-savvy commandos to your location, Zaraki, you're just being paranoid.

If PN's shop is anything like the one I work in, then they probably stop letting people in at "closing time" but deal with whoever is still in there before properly closing the store to the public. It's one of the reasons I'm glad I work on the shopfloor and not manning the tills.

Walkthroughs or Multiple Playthroughs?
Selfsurprise replied to Heliocentrical's topic in Gaming in general
I went with the walkthrough option by a small margin. I'm not exactly a committed gamer and frankly I usually don't have the time to play games for more than a few hours - and honestly I usually don't want to. I might belong to a minority on this forum in that gaming is a secondary interest to me, rather noticeably trumped by other things like looking at art or reading copiously. -
I mostly agree with you here. To play devil's advocate for a moment, I suppose a setting like Fallout lends itself rather naturally to numerous fetch-quests and missing person searches, I'd imagine a lot of that type of thing would be going if civilization collapsed into iniquity and barbarism. That being said, I agree wholeheartedly that whoever they have writing some of the quests seemed to be phoning-in much of their efforts. I would mind so much if there were considerably more stirring human drama or otherwise novel quests in amongst all the filler. It's not that the aforementioned filler-fare isn't necessarily fun, most of my enjoyment of Fallout 4 stemmed from simply wandering about or simply getting to various locations. It suffers from the same problem many open-world adventure games are afflicted with, in that eventually you hit a wall of sheer ennui in the face of the endless nature of the game. And I'm an avowed fan of the game! Imagine what one of it's detractors would have to say about all of this... ;p

You'll need some empty cereal boxes, paper, glue, scissors and your boundless imagination! Adult supervision is preferable. I'm in the mood for some beef pho but there are no Vietnamese restaurants near me that I'm aware of.

8/10, it's as true now as it always was. I'm sure my companions the heavenly lobster and the screaming crimson void will agree with me/us. -
If life was like Red Dwarf, I guess "earth" would be a gigantic planet-sized mining ship that was home to billions of people and an unimaginably huge number of other living things, except everybody would fall into five distinct categories; neurotic unlikeable holograms, angular faced androids with Canadian accents, slobby but well meaning scousers, snappily dressed vain folk with sharp teeth and people who exist solely disembodied faces on a computer screen with a deadpan sense of humour.
